Photo Observation 5/2

I took this photo over the summer visiting my family in Iowa. This picture was taken just after sunset, and the setting sun really enhances the vibrant blue of the sky. The lighting and sky was also so beautiful there overall because we were in the middle of nowhere, so there was no light pollution to block the colors. This lighting feels like summer for me because of how long the sky stays bright after the sunset, and it brings out nostalgic feelings for me, which also reminds me of the end of summer.

Lighting Observation – part twelve

5/1/2024 – 10:52 pm – outside of the Hofstra library

Objective: The outside lights surrounding the building illuminate the sky’s misty fog.

Subjective: The outside lights brighten up the tower’s visibility and glow from the night sky’s fog. Because of the brightness of the glow, the sky was strangely grey in the late evening, which brought a mysterious effect when walking back to my dorm.

summer post

photographed by me

These photos represent what summer means to me. The clear blue sky with no clouds in sight, small amount of the leafy shade covering the grass, every color in nature is vibrant and alive; this is what summer looks like to me. And what better way to represent the feeling summer is my dog. He smiles more in the summer because everyone is around and he gets to go outside and terrorize the neighbors and woodland creatures more.

Lighting Observation April 26

Friday Dance Concert 9:20PM

Objective: the lights are off, but there are orange dotted lights lining the floor. There are some colored lights coming from the sound booth. Onstage, the lighting is dim, but there is a light coming in from the top corner stage right that slowly lowers down. It slowly makes the dancers more and more visible.

Subjective: It feels like a sunrise on stage, but since the lights are on the floor and I can see the lights from the sound booth, it takes me out of the sunrise and makes me very aware I am watching a performance. The lighting forces me to lock in to the stage and really be drawn into what is going on. The lighting feels uplifting, but also with elements of sadness.

VVL Seasons

Sunset – based on the photos I looked at, the sunsets in New England have a lot of warm tones to them, so I tried to capture the warm redness/orangeness of the sky when the sun sets.

Lighting Observation 5/3

4/28/24 – 1:46 PM – Playhouse Dressing Room

Objective Description: The lights around the mirrors are warm and light up the whole room without the overhead light.

Subjective Description: Moments before the last show of the run, the dressing room is unchanged despite the increasing nervousness as the start of the show gets closer. The warm ambiance provided by the lights around the mirror exudes a calming atmosphere, much more welcoming than when the harsh overhead light is on.

Photo Observation 5/2

Photo from Pinterest

Photo Theme: Summer

I chose this photo because summer is about long days and appreciating the outdoors. This photo reminds me of summer’s nostalgia and brings back memories of beach days and watching the sunset. I love the warm sky colors and how the sun shines through the breaking waves.

Four Seasons 4/24

1.) The fall sunset gave me the idea of a very warm atmosphere in both tone and color palette while still being a more intimate feeling space. I added a wide spread of gobo to emulate the crisp texture of leaves as the setting usually possess lot of brightly colored trees in the fall season. Also being a sunset having the position high and in front as it slowly sets in front of the acting space and becomes more dimly as it transitions into the ight.

1. 50%, soft focus, deep straw

2. 50%, soft focus, breakup gobo,

3. 50%, soft focus, breakup gobo, light red

4. 70% soft focus, deep straw

Scrim Top: Full, resh pink

Scrim Bottom: Full, gold tint

2.) For the sunrise in the cathedral, I took inspiration from light through stained glass and wanted to emulate the colors and break up of the shapes through gobos. Also, the angled lighting to establish the sense of movement from night to morning as well as contrast of warm color to the right was to illustrate the natural light and warmth of the space that visually illustrates the sun pushing the darker hues in the space.

1.Full, window gobo @ med focus, 26 degrees, Deep Lavender

2. Full, Parry Sky Blue, soft focus @ 50 degrees

3. 75%, Light Red, soft focus@ 36 degrees

4. 95%, golden amber, soft @ 10 degrees

3.) Summer in Africa. I took inspiration from the Lion King with the use of strong line patterns to give texture to the atmosphere. For a more playful tone I stuck with a bright, warm color palette and contrast light cooler undertones that captured the heat of the environment that still opened up the space for the more spacious and jungle-like appeal.

2. Full, deep straw, lines gobo, med focus @ 50 degrees

6. 75%, Parry Sky Blue, soft focus @ 36 degrees

7. 75%, Parry Sky Blue, soft focus @ 36 degrees

4.) North Dakota winter with the cold possessing the sharp light to emulate the crispness of the winter space. I always visuals the winter time as a vast plain of snow so I wanted to the space wider feeling of depth and ice-olation (get it like isolation tehe) as the actor is emphasized with a brighter lighter in the atmosphere.

Lighting Observation 4/26

4/25, 5:00pm, outside of Bits and Bytes

Objective description: The sun is still shining brightly, but it is slowly getting lower in the sky. The light is a bit warmer and dimmer, but it still creates a lot of soft shadows through the trees and greenery.

Subjective description: The afternoon sun looks and feels warm and comforting, and it emphasizes the blue sky and green trees. It makes me want to lay outside and bask in the sunlight.
