Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3-22-20 around 3PM The backyard of my house

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Sun light peaking through the clouds

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: On Sunday I went outside to have a nice quarantine cry. I sat in the grass under a cloudy Texas sky and our Mexican Buckeye tree that is now taller than our house (we planted her when I was eight, her name is Georgia). Soon the clouds separated and rays of sunshine floated from above and warmed Georgia and I as we sat below. I was fascinated by the visibility of the sparkling rays of sunshine. They reminded me of the “rainbow road” level in Mario Cart.

Photo Observation

1) I snapped this photo some time last spring in front of the student center

2) THEME: Spring

3) DESCRIPTION: The blaring sun shining on the gorgeous little yellow flowers. They are so happy to see the sun, it looks almost as if they’re dancing! RIP spring 2020!

Photo Observation

2) THEME: Advertisement/Desire

3) DESCRIPTION: This is a 1999 advertisement for Virginia Slims, a brand of cigarette. The photo is very chic and stylized, making it nearly impossible to tell that it is an advert for cigarettes unless you are already familiar with the brand. The light is concentrated on the model’s face and neck, bringing attention to her lips and the “cigarette holding” stance of her fingers. The way in which the lighting aesthetically compliments and highlights the model’s complexion is breathtaking; almost makes you want to pick up a cigarette.

Photo Observation

2) My photo, February 15th

3) THEME: Night Life

4) DESCRIPTION: This photo was taken of me and my friend in the very colorfully lit basement at a party. The party was celebrating valentine’s day, hence the pinks and purples that were cascading around the room. The photo is blurry and chaotic, an accurate reflection of that night, but the pink lighting is bouncing off of our smiling faces; capturing the joy of having fun with friends.

Photo Observation

2) THEME: Single artificial light source

3) DESCRIPTION: The lighting in this photo is very dramatic and leaves you wondering what is happening in the room that this person is wandering into. The red light is practically spilling out of the door frame and onto the the individual walking hesitantly through the entrance as if someone doused him with a bucket of red paint. The color red creates an ominous and alarming glow, yet it is not intense enough to deter curiosity.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2-19-2020, around 7:00PM, my room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: My yellow desk light illuminating my fish’s bowl.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I sat down at my desk to eat dinner with my fish Finneas. I was having noodles, he was having his usual artisanal store bought fish food. As I dropped a few flakes into the water above him I was taken aback at how the light was creating this beautiful sparkle along the top of the water. The water was literally crystal clear; allowing the light to penetrate to the bottom of the bowl and make the little pink rocks twinkle.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Wednesday,  February 13th, around 10:30AM in the costume shop

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sequential “on” flicker of the florescent lights in the costume shop.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Chris and I were the first ones coming into the shop on Wednesday morning so we started getting everything ready for the day. As we made our way into the shop I flipped up the three switches on the wall next to the door. Immediately after, we were met with the white glow of the florescent lights that are mounted to the ceiling; all flickering on one by one like a line of marching soldiers. While the lighting itself was not exactly beautiful, I couldn’t help but think about all of the little electricity moments that happened when I flipped the switches.

3) THEME: Romantic/Romance

4) DESCRIPTION: This photo was proof to me that you could draw the feeling of romance from lighting in broad day light rather than a darker, moodier example of lighting. The natural light coming from the sun is joyful and the concentrated glow from the string lights is intimate and distinct. Both sources work together to create this beautifully simple composition that feels like a cozy day at home with someone you love.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Outside of Estabrook Hall around 6:00PM, 2/6/2020

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Yellow/orange light positioned along the outside wall of the building.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was walking toward my dorm building when I spotted this very moody lamp mounted on the side of Estabrook Hall. It gave off a lazy, very dim, orange glow. It’s soft rays obviously struggling to illuminate the ground roughly ten feet below. The light could have been missed entirely had it not been drizzling slightly; the dancing specs of rain reflected the lamp’s glow as they haphazardly searched for a destination to land. At the same time, the quiet mist could have gone without being noticed had it not been for the little glow of its friend: the orange light. I walked by as they danced their little dance.

Photo Observation

1) Photo taken by me, San Antonio, TX, 2/11/2020

2) Shadow

3) DESCRIPTION: This photo was a taken on a pleasant January night. My family and I had just finished a meal and we decided to take a walk of the surrounding downtown area. We ended up in front of San Fernando Cathedral. The four of us stood in the courtyard in awe of the 300 year old structure. There is no doubt that the architecture of the church is agreeable to the eye, but you must admit that the lighting is doing some pretty hefty lifting in this photo. The shadows created by the artful and sparsely placed lighting paint a ridiculously dramatic sight. The absence of light in certain areas of the facade create such deep shadows that make it seem as though the cathedral is being reclaimed by the dismal night sky.
