3. Bête noire: A person or thing strongly detested or avoided

4. This picture accounts for the subject mostly. Adolf Hitler is a person strongly detested for all of his actions in the second World War and the Holocaust and every horrendous deed ever done. But something that is often avoided is the fact that he was a person. I don’t want to defend Hitler. He was a terrible person. But he wasn’t all evil. History avoids the fact that he was nice to (German) children and gentle with animals because we want to see him as a completely evil being – because what sort of human can commit the monstrosities he did? The lighting plays on this, because it is evenly lit by the bright sun. The sun resembles happiness, and bright, even lighting is reminiscent of comedy shows – none of which we want to associate with Adolf Hitler. It just makes the shot that much more hateful.

Photo Observation #10

War in Iraq

3) Bete Noire

4) Bete Noire, meaning, “someone or something which is particularly disliked or avoided; an object of aversion, the bane of one’s existence,” for me can be identified in warfare. This image, from 2003 in Baghdad during the Iraqi war. As someone who believes that issues can be settled/solved peacefully, this image embodies the possible destruction that comes of war. Man’s destruction of himself is visibly present in this picture; the only light source derives from the fire and its reflection. On a much smaller scale, I avoid wars on a day to day basis, making sure to keep the peace between everyone; when confrontation blows out of control or out of proportion (which happens easily with Drama majors) I feel like this image on the inside and I feel like having to sweep up the smoke and debris.

Light Observation #10

1) Outside Spiegle Theater, Thursday 4/10 at 2:00 PM.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was leaving my Styles class from the Spiegle and intended to read over a scene with Matt Engle on our way to Modern, but I really couldn’t see anything due to the sudden change in light and my left eye watered the whole walk.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Because of the sudden brightness and flood of light, my eyes went into shock. An immediate layer of water filled them, particularly the left eye, causing me to have incredible difficulty reading the script that I held in front of me. Due to this experience, I felt as though I was floundering, with nothing tangible to grasp and ground me besides the light. The immersion in bright light felt very much like a flood, and my eyes reacted similarly in this imagery when they watered. I felt like I was drowning and floating, a positive and simultaneously negative experience, that was not settled until I had walked inside another building. Every person I walked by could have been a fish in this sea of tears, or a particle floating along. Everything was distant, blurry, and uncertain; I was immediately immersed in the uncanny without a choice. It made me hyper aware of how much we all listen with our eyes.

Bete Noire

This picture represents something that I often have mixed feelings about. Though I enjoy a walk in the snow, there are very few situations in which I am more uncomfortable, especially at night. Being alone or lost in a cold, dark forest is a fear of mine, and I can’t imagine anything worse.

Light Observation #10

1)April 9, 2014 10:05 AM Emily Lowe Hall, room 201

2)The combination of the lights on in the room and the sunlight coming in from the windows made for a different environment than is usually found in room 201

3)In a room that is usually fairly dim, walking into this brightly lit room was an unexpected change. Not only were the fluorescent lights on, but the brilliant sunlight streaming in from the large windows was reflecting off of the white paint, making the room just that much brighter.

4) For some reason, I strongly dislike the color green. For me, this picture represents the feeling that green gives me. I do not feel freedom in green and it makes me feel limited, less creative and closed in. The fluorescent green color seems to be trapping and limiting this girl more than the walls themselves.

2) The sunlight coming in from the window in the classroom.

3) The light that shined from the window hit the panes just right to create a perfect gobo-like paneling on the wall. It looked like the type of gobo that I might use for deathtrap in order to reflect what’s going on outside.  It would be perfect for indicating the moon while in the room.

3) Single Artificial Light Source

4) The street light produces a very prominent and bright area of light on the brick wall. The intense darkness that encompasses the light source uncovers and exposes the brick, establishing and emphasizing a mysterious energy in the image; no one knows where the wall ends or begins due to the concentration of the light source. Rather than choosing a spotlight on stage to demonstrate a single artificial source of light, it’s interesting to see the same effect that spotlights have on stage in daily life. This light draws so much attention to that small area of what could be a rather massive wall. This image captures the importance and prominence of a spotlight on stage and places it in real life, and as we know, “All the world’s a stage.”

Lighting Observation #9

1) Wednesday April 3, at 8:15 PM in the NAB.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was backstage in the black box waiting for my cue during the Don Juan tech run. It was the scene just before what’s known as “the rape scene.” I was sitting on a bench, alone, under one blue light.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This was not only a great lighting moment to experience, but it was also just a really beautiful moment for me to have backstage, especially in preparation for my upcoming scene. As I was focusing on getting the tears flowing, I noticed the single blue light that was the only source lighting me. Because I was in costume, I identified with a subject of Picasso’s blue period paintings, which was so exciting. The light covering of blue washed over me like the ocean; I was floating in the water, unable to grasp anything tangible. Normally I don’t enjoy feeling that unsteady, but this was soothing. The light was like a calm lotion that could give me the right tranquil experience to be focused and really let everything go in the next scene.

Lighting Observation #9

1. March 31st 2014, at around 8 on my block.

2. The lampposts on my block. One in particular: A flickering light post. They had an orange and yellow glow around a dark area.

3. On Old Post Drive, you can walk down the block in a beautifully illuminated area. Each step you take is lit up by towering light posts that cast pale shades of orange. They leave very faint circles of light on the floor so late night joggers can see in the dark night sky. One area of my block wasn’t bright as the rest of it. A flickering lamppost kept casting rays of light that lasted for seconds. When the light was on, the sidewalk was lit to perfection with faint glows of orange. When the lamppost was off, part of the block was lost in darkness.
