A fall sunset in Vermont — in this photo I tried to mimic the warm glow that the sun gives off against the colorful trees in the fall. There is one light that acts as the sun shining directly on the subject. That is a cooler color while the lights surrounding it make the scene feel very fall-like. The cyc is a deep bluish purple because when the sun gets low, the sky behind you gets darker.
Spring sunrise in a gothic cathedral — While the rest of the stage is dark because gothic cathedrals are dark, there is a bright light coming from the side. I still chose a warm color even though spring time is usually cooler colors because I find that when the light comes through a stain glass window, it gives a warmer glow. I used a gobo that makes it look like a tree is in front of the window because trees bloom in spring creating this effect.
Noon on a hot summer day in Hawaii — I tried to create the effect where the sun is directly overhead and there are no shadows. which happens twice a year in Hawaii. I had a bit of trouble getting the lights bright enough to mimic the blinding Hawaii sun so I added a lot of white lights (as many as I could) and then bumped up the brightness of everything. To create the no shadow look, I put the yellow light directly above the subject like how the sun would be. The light blue almost teal on the cyc represents the bright blue sky. I also kept some ambient light to add to the brighness.
Winter afternoon in Chicago — Most photos of Chicago have the big metal bean, so the circle represents the bean here. Winter in Chicago is cold so I used lots of cool colors with just a little blue on the cyc for the sky. The rest is just gray. having lots of lights gives of the bright feeling that happens when the sun reflects off of snow, while still feeling cold. A winter afternoon is going to have a very low sun, mostly covered by clouds. The slightly more yellow light directly pointing at the bean represents the sun. It feels a little bit warmer, but barely, and it is too low to really matter.
