Lighting Observation #10

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : April 19, 2022 at 6:40 pm, Lowe 108

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The sun sets in a cloudy sky, creating an orange like filter on the entire sky. The lights are all off, so the building is flooded only with outside light.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION :  The dusty orange sunset creates an unsettling feeling inside the studio. The usual vibrant colors of the sunset are diminished, and the weather creates a precarious feeling. The darkness of the studio increases as the sun continues to set, creating tall shadows all along the room. The structure of the archway outside the back of the studio makes the silhouette of the shadows even more pronounced. It seems as if the day is setting faster inside than it is outside. This winding down feeling emulates the energy level of the students as they reach the end of their academic day.

Light Observation #10

  1. Tuesday, April 19th, around 7:30am. Looking out my dorm window from my bed.
  2. The sunrise just above the Netherlands and shining through the tress, into my dorm.
  3. I woken up to my roommate’s 7:30 alarm, and as I flipped over to check what time it was I saw the sunrise. I sat and looked at it for a second. It was a breezy morning, so the trees were swaying, but that movement didn’t even cause there to be shadows across my dorm. The orange rays shining through would just be hidden for a split second before I could see them again. The image was quite striking and I really took a moment to appreciate how a sunrise changes as the Sun makes its way up to the sky, but also that the sunrise can be different every morning. Then I went back to sleep.

Lighting Observation #10

4/16/22 – 4:36 pm – Mandie’s Magical Marketplace in Lewes, De

Objective Description: On a lower shelf, right underneath a window, there are glass bowls filled with a gem called “Angel Aura.” These bowls are organized from left to right in rainbow order. There are bowls of Red, Rose, Orange, Yellow, Apple, and Light blue. The sunlight hitting the angel aura makes them shine bright and cascade a rainbow of colors along the walls.

Subjective Description: As the sunlight peers into the window of the quaint shop a cascade of colors is blasted onto the shelves. These pieces of the earth are meeting the sunlight unlike many of their relations. These angels shine independently in different colors but shine as one to make a harmony of light within this small shop. Each piece shines elegantly with a pearl-like effect on each of its colors. The rainbow of mellow light plastered along the walls creates a serene feeling in the shop.

Lighting Moment

  1. DATE / TIME / LOCATION: April 21st, 12:30AM, Spiegle Theater
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The department times was setting up their set and the projector screen was down, with a blue light covering it. The stage was dimly lit by amber light and the house lights where completely dark.
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The blue background and dim lighting created a very cinematic atmosphere, almost as if we where all about to sit down and watch a movie. The blue light coming from behind the two subjects on stage also created a glowing affect around both of them, which made the subjects seem almost ethereal.

Photo Observation :

1)

2) This is a still from the movie Inception (2010) starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because Inception is all about dreams, and I think dreams are the most surreal daily occurrence in human life. The buildings folding in on themselves are bizarre and off-putting to look at. There is a tunnel of light created by the folding buildings that acts as a spotlight for the figures in the forefront of the image. The image is very monochromatic, with a spectrum of cool grays composing the color palette. The color palette and tunnel of light both seem like they could be almost real, but the subtle artificiality confuses the viewers’ brains, which is what makes the image (and lighting in the image) so surreal.

Photo Observation

Attributes: Google Images

Theme: Surreal

Description: I chose this image because I was having a hard time finding surrealist images that had actual realistic lighting or lighting in any sense but this one was the closest to that. There are two different lighting sections in this picture as there is the brighter amber setting sun and then the darker green grass and I think there is a cool contrast between the two. The girl in the photo is also lit in a really cool way as the majority of light is backlight so it makes it look like she has a glowing aura around her that adds to the surreal theme.

Photo Observation: Surreal

  1. ATTRIBUTES: Google Images
  2. THEME: Surreal
  3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because the people in the photo are using small LED lights and taking thousands of photos of the lights in order to create images in the air. The different very bright and vibrant colors stand out against the dark background and light the two subjects in the photo in a very interesting way. I think that because it’s created without the use of photoshop or any editing and is all made in the real world gives it a very surreal feeling.

Surreal

A Still from Coraline

I chose this photo because when I think surreal I think of Coraline and the “Otherworld” because of how impossible everything is in that world. I chose a picture of the tunnel leading to the otherworld because the colors in this tunnel aren’t realistic based on the fact that they are supposed to be natural colors. This also has a big juxtaposition to the real world and how everything is realistic and has no color or imagination. The way the blue and pink lights are so strong yet don’t cast color onto Coraline shows how she does still have a grasp on reality but It also displays how these lights arent achieving a realistic way of shining. The entire thought of this tunnel is unbelievable and unobtainable.

Surreal Photo Observation

  1. Attributes: google images
  2. Theme: Surreal
  3. Description: I chose this picture because of the obviously bizarre sky, but also because of the way the light plays with it. In the picture, the light for the sky, child, and ground is very similar in color and brightness, so it makes it all look like one picture even though it clearly can’t be. I also really like how the light plays with the bends in the fabric to make it look both like sunbeams and a little bit like a tent. The sunbeams lend to the realistic portion of the sky, while the tent-esque structure the light helps create makes the picture more metaphorical and surreal

Lighting Observation #10

  1. Date/Time/Location: April 19, 7:27 pm in Constitution
  2. Objective Description: The bright orange light spilling into my window during golden hour
  3. Subjective Description: The light that spills in through the window fills the room with a warm sort of glow. It is bright and brilliant, warm and enticing, but in the corner of the room, the light is even more intense. The corner, rather than just being filled with a gentle wash, is covered in a brilliant orange glow. The brightness of the light seems almost unearthly. Its glow reflects off a mirror and onto the opposite wall, just missing me, but filling the room further with it a rich, golden, energetic warmth
