Light Observation

  1. Date/ Time / Location: April 20th , 3:45 pm , my living room
  2. Objective Description: It was the middle of the day and I had been feeling rather groggy since I woke up. Since I had some essays to write, I decided to go to the living room couch and play some movies as background noise. The lighting in this room is exceptional during midday because there are 4 different windows on opposing sides of the room, allowing sunlight to flow in from nearly every direction. At this point the sun was still shining quite bright in the sky which encouraged a warm glow to pour into the space.
  3. Subjective Description: After feeling sluggish, walking downstairs and seeing visible sunlight in the living room really opened up my eyes and motivated me to grind through some homework. The sunshine was not only awakening, but had a discernible homeliness to it. Even as I sat down and opened up my laptop, the warmth weather seemed to envelop me like a blanket. Now that the cold, gloomy weather is starting to pass, the vivid sunshine allows more energy to flow through the atmosphere of Hempstead.

Surreal Photo Observation

  1. Attributes: https://hifructose.com/2020/01/02/the-surreal-paintings-of-chris-austin/
  2. Theme: Surreal
  3. Description: This photo exemplifies the theme of surrealism by intertwining everyday images with imagination and a twist on reality. While everything in this picture may exist in real life, you would never see a shark soaring in the air. Moreover, the shadow cast over the shark conveys that he is floating beneath the tunnel and approaching the figure in the yellow jacket. I also like how the sea creature is smiling in the dark, almost giving him an even more sinister appearance. In the background, the mellow greens and bright pavement create a calm atmosphere, which the shark then disturbs by lurking in the shadows.

Light Observartion Eve

  1. DATE: 04/17/22
  2. TIME: 6:30 pm
  3. LOCATION: Wantagh Park
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: On Sunday it was Easter, so my boyfriend and I went out for a walk to the park near his house. The colors of the sky where yellow near the skyline transitioning slowly into blue. The sun was shining located to the right side (while we were sitting down on a bench). The colors were pretty but my boyfriend had the idea to stand up near the river and what amazed me was the beautiful shadow that created on him and the many houses. The water was still blue it was just the structures that were turned into shadows which I thought was very interesting.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This picture I was looking at gave me a feeling of satisfaction. It made me feel good and I think the reason why was because the shadows went along so well with the baby blue and the light yellow in the sky. It made everything look unreal and perfect.

Surreal Photo Observation Eve

  1. DATE: 04/20/22
  2. TIME: 9:00 pm
  3. LOCATION: Google
  4. THEME: Surreal
  5. DESCRIPTION: This paint has so many things to say despite the fact that as viewers we know that it is a fantastic idea that we are looking at. I was able to see the inside and outside perspective of the paint: inside meaning that a woman as a whole is beautiful but also has to maintain certain character to be strong enough in society. On the other hand, the outside perspective depicts organization, physical beauty but also that matched the wonderful colors from the sky. The lighting of various pink tones combine with the blue and a little of yellow and brown created a soft and delicate feeling.

Surreal Picture

  1. Found on “DeviantArt.com.” Titled, “The Path,” published by JoshuaDuLac.
  2. Theme: Surreal
  3. I find that the contrast between the light and dark, very realistic lighting, and the unrealistic stairs leading to the sky give an element of surreal. I’ve seen this lighting in the sky before after a day storm and I’ve never thought that there could be more behind the clouds, but this picture gives the illusion that there is more life behind the light, like there is something we’re missing and we can only take the stairs to find out. With the lighting and subject working together, there is an element of realism, but there’s also an element of fantasy and the way the lighting offers a spotlight in a way allows the two opposites to come together in a profound way.

Surreal

ATTRIBUTES : This photo was taken by John D Sirlin.

THEME : Surreal

DESCRIPTION : I chose this photo because of the combination of colors. I feel like our usual expectation for a sunset sky is lots of warm tones, oranges and reds, but here the sunset sky is full of purples and blues which makes it feel more unsettling. The dust storm is also interesting because when I think of dust I often associate it with something small, and easily moved. However, this picture makes the dust seem large and powerful. This betrayal of expectations encapsulates the idea of the surreal for me.

Lighting Observation – Alice McKay

  1. April 19, 1:41 PM
  2. The windows in the Hammer Lab looking to the Unispan are covered with matte white curtains that still allow light and shadows through.
  3. The coverings over the slender windows facing the people passing by create an odd environmental feel for the room. While having the light is nice, the shape and position of the windows don’t quite make sense. They are each separated by concrete spaces more than three times the width of each window. The concrete being painted the same color as the curtains creates a very mundane and monotone emotional response. I wonder what the difference is when the skylight coming in is more vibrant like at sunset?

Surreal – Alice

Attributes: Lucas Zimmerman: “Traffic Lights” https://www.amusingplanet.com/2014/01/surreal-traffic-light-photos-by-lucas.html

Theme: Surreal

Description: This long exposure photo was taken by Lucas Zimmerman showing a 30 second duration of lighting coming from crossing traffic lights on a bare street. The fog in the air around the lights acts as a catalyst for the vibrant red, yellow, and green lights to come to life. I love the contrast between the three lights on each post and how you can see the reflections not only in the haze but also on the asphalt, road markings, and plants surrounding the edges of the road.

Lighting Observation – #10

  1. April 19, 2022, 7:42am
  2. My bedroom, from the perspective of sitting at my desk
  3. My black doc martens sat on the wooden floor. The floor, because of how old this house is, is spattered with the color history of the wall and scratch marks from the furniture of tenants past. From the window, light shines down onto my boots and they glow white against their black exterior. The light barely effects the matted wood flooring.

Photo Observation – Surreal

1. ATTRIBUTES: Gem mae
2. THEME: Surreal
3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this image because I like how eery it appears. The dark shadows around the face of the baby makes it appear sunken deeper into the skull of the larger person. The lines across the portrait add to the old and creepy mood of it. Additionally, the greyscale aid in this setting of an eery atmosphere.
