Lighting Observation #1

1. Date: February 1, 2018
Time: 5:30
Location: Emily Lowe Building
2. A robustly orange light shines on the side of the building onto a set of descending stairs that leads to a pair of double doors. The light creates shadows around the sides of the set of stairs.
3. This orange light forces you to imagine someone looking back and then slowly descending into the light, down the stairs, and then out of the light, through the doors. It would immediately cause a sense of unease for any onlooker and creates a feeling of mystery for whatever is behind the doors.

Light Observation

  1. Date: February 1, 2018, Time: 8:30pm Location: Hague 311
  2. There is a peachy-orange light shining through some semi-closed blinds on two walls, each showing the lines cast by the blinds the light is showing through.  On the far wall, the blinds cast shadows which are mostly parallel to the floor, whereas, on the side wall, the blinds cast shadows that occur at an angle, and are less defined as the shadows on the far wall.
  3. The shadows cast portray a sort- of mysterious, or eerie feel if paired with someone walking past the window, or a flickering of the light, the mood would be much scarier, however, the peachy light somewhat defeats some of the spooky-ness.

Lighting Observation #1

  1. January 31, 2018 – 5:43pm – Hofstra University’s Intramural Field
  2. I am standing in the parking lot looking at Hofstra’s Intramural Fields. It is completely dark outside. The streetlight in front of me is tilted sideways casting light upon the bottom of a tree to its right. Only the bottom right branches are lit up orange. The lighting highlights all of the tiny details of the main branch, and everything else around it is in darkness.
  3. The lighting gives off a dark mood. The tiny, skinny branches that are highlighted by the light look as if they are a mysterious creature’s claws emerging from the dark. Nothing can be seen in the distance, and there is a sense of hopelessness. The orange light itself, creates a feeling of comfort, yet the light it gives off gives the viewer a sense of fear.

Photo Observation #1

Title: “Venetian Sunrise”

Location: Venice, Italy  January 12, 2018

Theme: Sunrise

The view of a sunrise as the photographer is riding away from the angelic colors on a boat through the canals of Venice. The sunrise begins as a light orange and becomes a deep pink fading into a soft purple. The sky is reflected onto the water of the canal leaving a dark shading onto the houses on both sides of the water. This picture leaves me with a sense of relaxation. Looking at the beauty of Venice before the actual city, itself, is even lit up, preludes to just how magical this place really is. Although boats are already passing each other by, the water only seems slightly disturbed leaving just enough rippling to look as if a rock glided across its surface.

Lighting Observation

Lighting moment 1/29/18: Drama Lounge 2:05pm

I am in the far back right hand corner of the Drounge. It is mid afternoon and a heavy over cast. The light is coming in from the big window on the back wall. It is a very bright white light. It light is filling the room completely except where the table is and casts a shadow in the middle of the floor. On the other side of the room the doorway is emitting light from the hallway but only reaches halfway into the room. The light is a darker yellow. It mixes with the white light to create a creme color on the white wall. How ever the adjacent wall is just being hit with the bright white light because the door is blocking the yellow light.

The light gives off a conflicting mood. The dominate white light area gives off a cold (In the sense of unfriendly) mood, while the creme yellow side gives off a friendly, more comfortable mood. It is like a ying and yang symbol. Pending where I was sitting I felt a different mood inside of the lounge.

Title: “Fiery Sunset in Ocean-Side, December 10 2017” -Pintrest

Theme: Sunset

A strong radiant sunset on a beach in the winter. The sun is still fully in  the sky but close to the horizon. The center is a dark yellow, and a creamy orange surrounds the yellow. The outer layer is a high intense red-orange. The outer most layer is rich lavender that reflects onto the sand as well. This sunset reminds me of a dramatic scene in Star Wars the Force Awakens when the X Wings are riding in from the sunset to confront the Storm Troopers. The light is so strong that the colors in the water are almost as rich as the colors in the sky.

Lighting Observation #7

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: May 7th, 5pm, Lowe’s raceway

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: At the movies, its a blackout right after a climactic point in the movie, and theres a cellphone lighting up two rows in front of me.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: There’s just been a major fight, the villain defeated, i’m ready for the next scene, but a light catches my eye. No, not a light on the big screen, a small screen two rows ahead is blinding me. Distracting, rude, obnoxious. I just want to watch this movie, but now its dark and all I see is the blinding light from the tiny phone.

Virtual Light Lab Project

I chose my inspiration picture as it has an interesting contrast of the orange and the purple.  It has the feeling of Fall in that it has romantic warm colors, and the way the woman is lit is similar to the background but with less harsh warms and a light cool to make her look more real.  The lighting has a richer version of purple than the inspiration as it better exemplifies the rich feeling of Fall.

Springtime is a very romantic time of year, so the colors I found in this image of a Spring sunrise on Long Island fit that idea perfectly.  The subtle pink melding in the bluish sky gives off an impression of warmth that isn’t overpowering.  The sweetness of the lighting evokes the romantic time of springtime along with the bright energy of the emerging morning.

A hot summer day in New England means there are no clouds in the sky and everything is too bright.  The harshness of the day is reflected in the far too bright sky, and the lighting itself makes you want to be wearing sunglasses.

Four Seasons VLL

Fall Sunset in Hawaii

  • Backdrop Colors: G990 @ Full, G345 @ 75%, G133 @ 50%
    • AP7630 backlight 50% intensity:  37 degree elevation angle, 56 degree back angle, stage right of model

  • AP7250 backlight 50% intensity: 37 degree elevation angle, 56 degree back angle, stage left of model
  • AP7400 front light 50% intensity: 54 degree elevation, 75% intensity

I chose this inspiration because when I think of Hawaii I think of bright colors and a warm sun, and this image captures exactly that. The purple and the orange are colors you don’t generally see together, however in a sunset they become increasingly more beautiful and compliment each other wonderfully.

Spring Sunrise on Long Island

Backdrop Colors: Bottom: G335 @ 75% and G450 @ 50%  Top: G813 @ 100%

  • RE022 sidelight 25% intensity: -19 degree elevation, 56 degree side angle, stage right of the model
  • RE102 sidelight 75% intensity: 56 degree side angle, 0 degree elevation, stage right of model

  • AP2790 sidelight 75% intensity: -23 degree elevation angle, stage right of model

I chose this picture as my inspiration because no matter what time of year it is, sunrise is always the coolest part of the day. The sun just peeking over the water in contrast with the cool blue sky gives it just a little bit of a chilly feeling, but the sunlight is sort of warm and has a home-y feel to it.

Summer Noon in New England

  • R4530 front light @ 75%: 54 degree elevation angle with gobo template
  • RE130 side light @ 75%: 21 degree side angle stage right of models, 52 degree elevation angle
  • RE130 side light @ 50%: 21 degree side angle stage left of models, 52 degree elevation angle

I chose this photo because summer to me is clear skies and boat rides, and New England is the perfect place to do that. This picture captures the essence of summer in a perfect way. You can tell that its warm, but also breezy. Its very relaxing.

Winter Afternoon in Alaska

  • Backdrop gels: Top- G785 @ 100% Bottom- G109 @ 100%
  • AP3300 side light @ 50% intensity: 48 degree elevation, 37 degree side angle, stage left of the models

  • AP2310 side light @ 75% intensity: 23 degree elevation, 56 degree side angle, stage left of the models

I chose this picture because Alaska’s afternoons especially in winter, can be very dark. So even though this photo was taken in the afternoon, it looks like its a few mere hours away from dusk. It makes the air feel cold and frigid, unwelcoming almost, and yet it seems to be very playful and enjoyable with how the sun’s rays bounce off the snow.
