Lighting Observation 10

Date: 4/8/16

Time: 4:15pm

Location: Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refugee

Objective description: The tide is out and very little sunlight penetrates the clouds and hits the wet sand which reflects it.

Subjective description:  Small areas of warm pale yellow light break through the dense gray/blue cloud coverage.  Tide is far out and the wind has created deep ripples in the wet sand.  The tops of these ripples are highlighted with white light that pierces the mainly dark sky while the lower side of the sand mound casts a dark blue shadow.  The pattern of gray/blue clouds and small areas of light mirror the wet sand with dark shadows and reflected highlights.  Everything is bright and seems to almost glow in the lack of direct light.

Photo Observation 10

beyonce-pulse-fragrance-ads

Theme: advertisement model/desire

Description:  This photo uses mainly side light and top light.  She seems to have white light coming from what would be stage left that illuminates the entire left side of her body while casting the other half in shadow, making her seem mysterious and beautiful as her features are clearly defined.  Some top light is clearly used as the top of her head is lit and as well as the top of both of her thighs.  The blue/gray background with and explosion of light from behind her makes her seem powerful and alluring.

Theme: Advertisement/Desire

Description: I chose this advertisement because Urban Decay is one of the most hyped makeup companies, and for good reason. Not only is this product awesome (I own it …), but the simple idea behind the advertisement is kind of genius.

The first thing that caught my eye was that the model’s face was lit up with a harsh, white light. Bright or fluorescent lighting isn’t known for being flattering to the face. It exposes every flaw and imperfection. But if you’ll notice, the name of the palette is “Naked,” which is synonymous with exposed. Obviously, an eyeshadow won’t give you perfect skin, but it makes the connection in the viewer’s mind that if you wear this makeup, you could possibly look as perfect as this model. It basically says, if you look this good in ugly light, you’re golden in softer, everyday light.

Everyone wants clear skin and lots of others want the kind of badass eye makeup pictured here. If the lighting weren’t so bright and dramatic, the picture wouldn’t have had such a sensational effect.

Palazzo da Mula At Venice

gentle

Palazzo da Mula at Venice by Claude Monet (1908)

Photo of painting found on wikiart here.

Screen shot 2016-04-08 at 8.37.34 AM

Gentle.

The warm yellows, ambers, and just the slightest touch of pinks gently illuminate the palazzo from hardly any vertical angle, while angled steeply to the left horizontally. Although much of this painting is in cool blues and greens, the lighter greys and warm colors rendering the light have such a light, delicate, and quite gentle touch – serenely reflecting itself on the water in the foreground. This feels like early morning, maybe just prior to dawn. It feels somewhat melancholy, but overall contemplative and mostly simply content. These more peaceful and serene feelings tend to tag along somehow with something that is gentle, or gently depicting a particular scene. I ended up looking through quite a lot of impressionist paintings actually, as it felt like every photo I found depicted a subject that was gentle rather than presenting gentle lighting.

Lighting Observation 9

Date: 4/7/2016 Time: 9:23 p.m. Location: My dorm room

Objective Description: All of the lights in my room are out and it is almost entirely dark. The only light coming in is form the parking lamps outside of my window through the closed blinds.

Subjective Description:  The blinds are completely closed by the tiny cracks let bits of light sneak in. The light forms straight and orderly lines on my wall which is fairly blank. One of the lights is flickering and a patch of wall lights up randomly. As I try to close my blinds a way that will stop the light from coming in, the beams just move to the top of my wall and my ceiling. The amber colored pinstripes on my wall will not leave, so I just decide to enjoy my new illuminated wallpaper.

Theme: Gentle

Description: This is an image of a woman standing by a window in the early morning absorbing the light of the early day. It is an example of  gentle light because the light coming through the window is  warm, but not blindingly bright. As the woman in the photo is slowly getting ready for the day ahead of her so is the sun in the distance.

Lighting Observation #9

Date: 4/4/16 Time: 10:30ish pm Location: Terminal 5 at a concert

Objective Description: Purple, blue and yellow flashing lights covering a stage and dancing along the floor.

Subjective Description: The colorful lights danced across the stage and flashed as the rapper jumped around the stage preforming. The lights followed his movement and the excitement of the song as if they were being controlled by his voice. The bright lights amplified the excitement of the crowed and overall mood of the event.

Light Observation

Time: Late afternoon, last Wednesday (this happened over spring break when I was home)

Objective Description: Afternoon sunlight shone on Big Tupper and the other surrounding mountains, creating patches of light and shadow on the rolling landscape.

Subjective Description: The sight of light and shadow on mountains is one of my favorite lighting moments in the world, ever. It seems like such an insignificant thing, but personally, I don’t think anything else could top it. It’s a sight that I’ve admired outside of my bedroom window for as long as I can remember.

I could see Big Tupper, the local skiing mountain, as well as several of the other nearby Adirondack mountains, from my bedroom window. It was late afternoon and the day was still bright despite the drab March landscape of dead, leafless trees. The sun shone brightly, casting dark shadows on some of the area. The shadows contrasted immensely with the parts of the mountain that were lit up by the bright sun. You could see every contour of the mountain. It almost gave the impression of movement, despite the fact that these mountains are some of the oldest and have been in one place for billions of years. The dark parts made the mountains seem huge and mysterious – you’ll never see every part of it clearly, because by the time the sun illuminated the shadowy spots, another part of the mountain had gone dark.

The light and shadow accented the mountains’ natural beauty. The sight was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Every time I see it, I am reminded that I am blessed to call such a beautiful place my home. I don’t miss the snow and cold weather and driving 40 minutes to get to a Starbucks, but I do really miss the way sunlight shines on the mountains in the afternoon.

Theme: Gentle

Description: The only light in the room comes from a stuffed animal turtle projector, which shines softly on the boy as he sleeps. The light makes the boy look very peaceful. The fact that the light comes from a stuffed animal rather than a nightlight plugged into the wall makes the light much more gentle, as stuffed animals generally have connotations of being comforting. The projected stars add to the effect, as they are less harsh than a beam from a typical nightlight. In addition, the light coming from the turtle is shades of blue, which is a calming and relaxing color. All of these elements make this the perfect gentle lighting for going to sleep.

Lighting Observation 9

Date: 4/3/16

Time: 11:00am

Location: Somewhere on 80 East in the Pocono Mountains

Objective Description: I am driving along a long highway in the mountains.  Currently I am in a valley, looking ahead I see a large mountain range with sunlight shining down through the clouds.

Subjective Description: Warm sunlight peaks through the gray clouds on a cold spring day in early April.  Beams of sunlight are visible in long streaks across the sky as it pours down over a small section of a large mountain range.  Clouds cast shadows across the rest of the mountain face making it appear a dark blue in the distance. The beautiful color is broken up by small patches of warm white light that was able to pierce the cloud coverage.
