Photo Observation 9

I took this photo

Theme: gentle

Description: A single warm yellow/amber light shines in a seemingly all dark room.  The warm light spans outwards and seamlessly dissipates into the darkness.  The warmth (both physically and metaphorically) coming from the light seems to welcome us in and show an area of solace from the darkness that surrounds. The light is gentle, warm and welcoming.

Lighting Observation 4/8/16

Date: 3/30/16

Time: 3:30 pm

Location: Anne Frank House, Netherlands

Objective Description: Delicate pages from a carefully preserved diary lay against a dark backdrop. The light, coming from small instruments on the ceiling and several instruments surround the display case create just enough of a dim light to read what is written. Notices on each side of the display mark just how delicate the pages are and how dim the display must be lit for preservation purposes.

Subjective Description: A dark and narrow room, grave like the circumstances of the second World War. A dark, velvet blue pillow cushioning the red and white plaid diary that would send chills across the world. A room so dark, the soft-yellow dim accompanying the displays all but forced your eyes upon the focus of such a grim past. Dark like that of her fate, but hopeful as the dim light illuminates the pages she so desired for the world to read. There is a silence as the stark atmosphere removes you from the outside world and places you into the secret hiding place, dawned with blackout curtains and the deprivation of natural light. An homage to dark days that still haunt the streets of the Netherlands and the history of the world.

Lighting Observation #9: Over the River

March 25th-7:00pm-Crossing the Millard E. Tydings Memorial Bridge on Interstate 95

The sun was setting with yellows, blues, and greens and the light was still high enough that it caught the water. Yellow light reflected off the water making the water’s color a complete mystery whether it was blue, clear, or more greenish.

The reflected light shimmered in the water like a soothing hum lingering in the air. The sky blended with the water in color tone to become one shattered sort of mirror of the sky. It was peaceful and harmonious like a sharing of ideas and spread of beautiful light across the world. The shimmering golden lit water was breathtaking. The sunset made the scene like a fairytale. It was all so fantasy-like that it was surreal. It has the magical feeling associated with it like what would be felt if a penny was dropped into a wishing fountain and then the fountain’s water miraculously turned a more cooper-like color. With its magical qualities or really qualities of the beauty of nature, the lighting was like an enchanted reality.

Photo Observation #9: Gentle Sunlight and Gentle Shadows on a Shelf

IMG_3735

I took this photo.

The theme is gentle.

This photo’s light falls into this theme since the lighting is not harsh and glaring. It does not hide the details of the photo’s subjects with huge splotches of light but rather has a gentle light that is fairly even in its beam-spread. The lighting is soft with a dim feeling or low intensity. This lighting is gentle just like how a soft whisper might be seen as gentle in terms of sound. It catches the details and illuminates them with a surrounding glow. The lighting is friendly with its distribution of being about the subjects. It is like a gentle hug one might give at a funeral. Even the shadows are faint and soft in this gentle light.

Theme: Gentle

Description: This photo gives off a gentle feel because of the serenity that I get from it. The sunlight is warm and calm like that of a sunset over the lake. It also has a nice reflection off the water that reminds me of summer nights spent with friends and family. Also, the feather itself is a gentle object and it aids the message of the photo by floating on top of the water.

Photo Observation: 4/8

image

This is a picture I took at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire.

Theme: Gentle

Description: The soft tones of the water colored sky envelope the sands and gentle-moving waves with a blanket of warmth. The distant puffed clouds of white become colored with a hue of pink as the setting sun reflects effortlessly off of the deep, blue sea. The sky is calm, void of rapid movements and impending storms, the clouds are dispersing to their caverns of sleep. The ocean, exhausted from showing off its tall, strong waves reaches goodbye to the sinking sand as the soft-foaming edges sing the seagulls to sleep. An ombré of darkness from top to bottom, the moon makes her promised cameo as the sleep-deprived sun takes its curtain call for the night. All is at peace.

A Lone Light in the Dark

Spooky

Spooky.

A singular, lone light illuminates a back door down a winding alley. The eerie glow eminating from the singular light source sheds light only on the set of concrete stairs leading onto a street? an alley? You’re not sure because you can’t see it. The late-night-into-early-morning fog creates a hazy atmosphere, filtering the bright white light into something softer (misleading), only sending yet another shiver down your spine as you fumble for your phone, only to discover its battery long dead. Your breath quickens as your mind races, and you begin walking at a brisk pace to go – you don’t know where, you only know you must get away from here.

A release

Date: 3/11/16 Time: 4:20 pm Location: Fire Island

Objective: The light is the vibrant sunset shining right past the houses, along the water.

Subjective: On such a beautiful day, my roommate and I decided to go to the beach.. but we instead headed towards Fire Island to see what was up. We arrived at this small dock, right by these houses and gazed out into the horizon. There was a moment of relief for just a brief second as I look at the seagulls accompany tiny patches of island and take off soaring into the sky. For a brief moment, it didn’t feel like any of my worries mattered.

light observation

1) March 15th – 7:15 am

2) The sunrise is shining through my window, illuminating my lamp, which was turned on as I woke up before sunrise, and the shadow of the lamp on the wall is interesting because it’s one of those multiple-bulb lamps with only a few bulbs on at a time, so like, some of the shadow is brighter than the other part of it, because it’s a shadow from the sun, but the light of the lamp illuminates it, and also, the light of the lamp is fluorescent white light, whereas the sun is throwing a very yellow/gold hue on the wall.

3) Well what I think is cool subjectively about this is that it’s kind of almost like a section of the wall as it was before the sun rose, being preserved into the daytime. Ignoring the fact that the sunlight is indeed reflecting off of everything and also passing through the translucent parts of my lamp, it’s kind of like a cut section of the wall from an earlier time – cause the sunlight isn’t affecting it, but the lamp light still is, whereas all around it, the sun is bright enough to not be able to see the lamp light at all affecting the wall. So that’s cool. I guess the emotion I’d put there is like, determined, like, the lighting itself from the early morning is determined to preserve itself through the day. Until, well, I turn off my lamp, I guess.

Attribution: http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/12-post-your-photos/179522-black-white-some-new-ir-8mm-cemetery-images.html
Theme: Spooky
Description: Gonna be honest here, I asked myself “what’s spooky?” and my answer to myself was “cemeteries” so I googled that, and found this. I like the lighting a lot, cause the shadows really stretch along the ground in different angles due to the curvature of the 8mm camera lens, but it’s all coming from a single light source. It makes it look pretty surreal and cool and honestly spooky.
