Photo Oberservation Week #6: Powerful

3) Theme: Powerful

4) This picture signifies powerful to me because whenever there is lightning, it strikes and makes a loud noise. This reminds me of a scene in a movie where people are on a boat and there’s a horrible storm going on. The characters are trying to get home or find land so they can save themselves. This is a shot I can see a director using to signify how bad the storm is. The lightning that is striking in this picture looks like it is hitting the ocean. The white light in the middle of the lightning is very powerful and has a huge glare. Where the lightning is striking, you can see the sky in the background. The color is a light blue where the outer area of the sky is a darker blue especially in the middle of the photo.

Photo Observation #6: Powerful

  1. firewx1
  2. Photo from at http://www.erh.noaa.gov/okx/okxfirewx.html
  3. Theme: Powerful
  4. The way the fire lights up in the darkness is chilling. the strength of the edge of the yellow makes it look as if the fire is pushing the hill out of the picture. The oranges and reds spread throughout the tree’s being cast against the shadows of the billowing smoke. Fire has always been a symbol of power to me. The idea that fire extended the day with it’s light is a perfect example of the power it has. The way the light is growing from it’s source and quickly moving across the mountainside is a perfect demonstration of it’s strength and power. It is making itself known and is showing that it truly is a force to be reckoned with. The way the light fills the darkness is the visual representation of it’s capabilities, extending night to day.

Lighting Observation #6

1. 12:00AM, March 7th, 2013 Crossing Oak Street

2. The stop light at the crosswalk is blinking red. A mixture of snow and rain is slowly falling down into puddles on the paved road.

3. Red. Red is the color of power. It is authoritative. It is present. It means STOP. As I cross the street to my dorm room, the stop light hangs in the sky, looking down like “Big Brother.” The red light is a beacon. It shines across the street and turns all of the condensed rain drops and puddles from a fluorescent amber to a blood red for just a second or two. The way the light casts itself on the rain makes it look as if there is an army of little people all looking up at the street light. They are ready for battle and know where their allegiance lies.  This light screams passion to me. It is powerful and strong. It makes its presence.

Lighting Observation #6

1) 3/5/13 at 9:20am, getting coffee at Café on the Quad

2) the morning sunlight coming through the windows

3) this light made me extremely energetic. The light was bright and yellow which made the day seem like spring. This light woke me up and seemed to infuse me with more energy than the coffee would have, so I ended up not getting coffee. The yellow to the light made me think of spring and the brightness made me want to do something before the sun decided to become cold due to the incoming storm. I love how this light makes me want to accomplish all of the tasks I have to do instead of making me want to curl up, like winter usually does. It was such a pleasant surprise.

Lightning

2) taken from Josiah Hilbig at http://extrovertdiary.blogspot.com/2012/11/purple-lightning.html

3) theme: powerful

4) I found this picture incredibly powerful for a couple reasons. The first is because when I was small I was told that lightning was when God was angry, so definitely think that has a huge influence on me, but also because I thought it had to be God because of how bright it was. When I was very young lightning hit a tree outside my window and I was blinded for a short time because of how bright it was against the night darkness. Also, for this specific picture, I always think of purple as one of the most unique colors to see in the sky, so when I see it I have a very powerful emotional response of reverence and awe for how majestic everything becomes. So the purple lightning is probably one of the most powerful lights I can think of for myself.  Truly an awe-inspiring image.

Photo Observation Week #6: Powerful

Powerful

2) This picture was taken by flickr user cara75 on May 26, 2006 at the Paramount Theater.

3) Theme: Powerful

4) In a previous light observation post, I talked about the ghost light in the Adams Playhouse, and how strikingly powerful this seemingly small light source could be. The ghost light in this picture completely overwhelms the space. The way the light is dispersed around the bulb gives you an impression that it’s too powerful to even look at, having no real defined shape, and blurred edges. What creates the most powerful look is the way the light casts shadows onto the curtain; the long, dark shadows contrast with the bright red, further expanding on the sense that this small lamp is conquering a huge, solid darkness.

Light Observation #6

1) 2/28/13, 2:57pm, Art History Class- Breslin

2) The recessed lighting in the ceiling is shining through the wrapper I removed from my hummus. The text from the wrapper is shadowed onto the table backwards.

3) When you see shadows, they usually aren’t crisp. When I picture shadows, I think about shadows of large things like trees and people, whose shadows usually disperse at the edges and are not so defined. This shadow, however, is extremely crisp. The letters are projected backwards on the cool blue-grey desk, creating a parallel universe sensation when contrasted to the bright oranges and reds on the wrapper. There are two light sources, and the solid, pigmented portion of the wrapper casts two disjointed ring shadows, creating even more of the parallel dimension feeling. Even the wrinkles show up crisply on the desk, which combined with the print make the solid grey table look like wrinkled newspaper. It’s strange to think that there is only one of any object, yet it is portrayed in so many ways due to shadows and reflections.

Light Observation #5

1. 2/27/13 3pm In the car on hempstead turnpike

2. The clouds were beginning to disappear as it had been raining, the sun began to shine through a few of the clouds and reflect off of the wet pavement.

3. As we were driving down the Hempstead Turnpike towards Hicksville, we stopped at a red light. Looking up I noticed that the rain had stopped and the clouds that were hovering above us before were now gone. I keep looking and noticing that the sun was coming through the clouds, as if the sun was trying to physically push the clouds away. The bright white-yellow light shined through the two clouds and beams of sunlight hit the wet pavement creating a reflection. This would only occur for a little bit longer as the light turned green and the light that was once shining in front of us was now behind, following along.

2. http://deepfrogphoto.com/Brett-Pelletier-Photography/Boston-Gallery/slides/boston-skyline-and-rowes-wharf-at-night.html

3. Theme: Nightlife

4. What first drew me to this photo was the reflection of the un-natural  Florissant and led lights on the water, looking at different pictures and looking at water in general its usually the natural lighting of the sun that reflects on the water, but here the blues, oranges and greens reflect in the water along with the buildings. For me this describes night life because at night I think of lots of un-natural lighting coming from homes or buildings, theres usually crazy colored lights and thats ehat this picture has. The sky is a purpley color as well due to the lights all over the city.

Journal Entry 5

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/28/13, 10:00 PM, Alliance Hall Stairwell

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I am in the stairwell looking through the hatched glass window of the door to the floor below mine, and I can see the florescent light in that hall is flickering.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This light is terrifying. The oatmeal colored walls and industrial doors and loud echo of the dorm stairwell always feel a bit like a prison or mental institution anyways, but the addition of the steadily flickering light makes it even worse. I rush up to the next floor quickly, for fear that an escaped mental patient is about to run out of the door at any second.
