Photo Observation: Vibrant, Colorful, Saturated

Source:  http://audreyhenninger.tumblr.com/

Theme:  Vibrant, colorful, saturated

Description:  I stumbled across this picture and I couldn’t stop looking at it.  I felt it followed the theme because the colors in the flower and of the woman’s lipstick are so bright, they almost shout at you.  I found this picture to be very beautiful partly because of the colors, but also because it’s a strange photograph to take.  I like how the oranges in the flower get redder in the middle and mimic the red of the lipstick.  The bright oranges and reds are very vibrant and colorful to me.

Light Observation 1, Week 3

When/ Where:  Friend’s living room, Wednesday 1:45 pm

Objective Description:  Tyler sitting on a chair next to a window while smoking a cigarette.

Subjective Description:  There was sunlight coming in through the window, and when Tyler exhaled his smoke and leaned against the wall, the sun caught the smoke so it looked like a billowy veil over his face.  It looked magical and weird, but still very cheerful because of the bright sunlight.  I enjoyed this lighting moment a lot because it took me by surprise.

Light Observation 1 (Week 3)

1) Monday night around midnight, my room

2) A desk lamp illuminating our dorm room, reflecting off the wall

3) A few minutes before going to sleep, my roommate turned on his the lamp on his desk which he seldom uses. It was pointed downward limiting the light it emitted. It created a very soft, warm, yellowish light in the front corner of the room. The rest of the room was dark and shadowy due to the limited light. The lamp light reminded me of the type of light cast by a solitary candle in a dark room. It only provided light close to the source but quickly faded. The casing of the lamp has slits in it, possibly to limit how hot it got, but the light streamed onto the wall through these slits creating an interesting sharp pattern of light and shadow on the wall. It creating a feeling of comfort and peace, and creating a soothing atmosphere before I fell asleep.

Lighting Observation: Week 3, Observation 2

Where: Wednesday night, in front of Lowe.

Objective Description: There are two trees in the quad – they are somehow dimly lit by a source not visible to me off to my left. The light hits them from underneath.

Subjective Description: I’m a little fascinated. I’ve never seen trees lit this way before. Something about the image reminds me of fire – perhaps because the weakness of the light and the shadows of branches create the illusion of fast, flickering movement.

Lighting observation: week 3, observation 1

Where: Monday, late afternoon, in front of Alliance hall.

Objective Description: It’s a lightly clouded day, and the sun is in the west – it manages to get through small breaks in the cloud.

Subjective Description: It looks like something out of a painting. I didn’t think something so picturesque actually occurred in real life. It had a holy or heroic feel – it was reminiscent of paintings or films where a single beam of sunlight breaks through the clouds onto a saint or hero.

Photo Observation 3

2) This photo was taken by me during the summer while I was at Disneyland in California,  the picture itself is from their new fountain show, World of Color.

3) Vibrant, Colorful, Saturated

4)  I picked this picture because when I think of color and vibrance, I think of this show.  I really like the use of the whole entire rainbow and how everything is lit up.  I think the blend of colors in this picture speaks vibrant and colorful.  The other thing I like about this picture is that it not only has the basic colors of the rainbow but all the colors in between too.  I think the glow of the fountains in this picture contributes to the vibrant aspect of it too.  Having all that color against a black sky also helps emphasize that color and bring out the contrast more , especially in this photo.

Lighting Observation 2 (Week 3)

1) 2/16/11- about 11:40 p.m.- In the car on the way to the rink

2) A series of street lights lined up

3)  I observed the many street lights on Hempstead Turnpike and I noticed that they all lined up very nicely and made a perfect picture in perspective.  The lights got gradually shorter, the farther they were away and also dimmer.  The lights also moved, as in grew taller and brighter as we moved in the car towards them.  The interesting thing I realized is that the lights are all yellow and it is a kind of yellow that does not speak caution or danger but is softer and sleepier.  I wonder why this type of light is used?  The other interesting thing is that when at the right angle I realized that the row of lights looked as though it never ended and I thought that was an interesting trick that the lights did.  I was really impressed and amazed at how light can show so much depth and really help you compare distances.

Lighting Observation 1 (Week 3)

1) 2/12/11- around 8:30- Hockey Rink

2) Moon light shining through window into a completely dark rink.

3)  This lighting moment was one that caught me off guard because the way the light shined through the window was perfect and look as though it was done on purpose.  It felt cold and a little bit mysterious.  The light shined through a four pane, old window and it created long beams of light that looked similar to a spot light.  It was a bluish tint and the only light I could see.  The high angle of the light also gave it a strange look, as though it was looking down upon something and would have definitely cast long deep shadows that would conceal the features of an object.  It was a picture perfect light.

Lighting Observation 5

Where: Class in Breslin

When: Feb 16th

Objective: My professor was using a powerpoint presentation so all the other lights were out in the room, but there was a light on his podium that lit his face from underneath

Subjective: I thought this was a very good example of selective visibility. My attention was automatically brought to him and he was only thing brightly lit in the room. Being lit from below in this case did not bring an eerie feel because it was bright enough to fill in all the shadows in his face, so the emotion caused by this lighting was not too strong but immediately brought attention to him.

Photo Observation 3

Where: Dorm room

When: 2008

I took this picture freshman year of a friend of mine spinning a collection of LED keychain lights that are gruped together in front of his face. I chose this picture because of the way the red hits his face, while the background is black. It gives the feel of his face emerging from the abyss, and gives him an almost demonic feeling. The shadows accentuate this effect.
