Photo Observation #4

  1. Found this photo online
  2. Theme: Bizarre
  3. This photo initially caught my eye because of the mannequin heads, but what really held my attention was the fiery orange-red hair on the left. I found it bizarre that a similar red patch appears on the mannequin to the right, making both figures stand out. The dark green of the building adds to the eerie atmosphere, evoking the feel of an old, abandoned shop. The bright white reflection makes me think this photo was taken on a cloudy day. Overall, the lighting and color contrast give the photo an unsettling quality.

Photo Observation # 4

Photo from Google

Theme: Bizarre

With this weeks theme I immediately thought of the Turkish bazaar as I have visited in the past and my moms house is now adorned with the colorful lights seen here. While I understand I took the theme rather literally, the colorful lamps, a collage of small colorful pieces of glass all lit by the same bulb, provide a unique and slightly bizarre lighting experience. This picture shows an area of a bazaar that is undercover, a protection from the heat. This often results in harsh unnatural and cold lighting much like the high lamps seen in the back of the picture. What I appreciate about this picture is how the area in the forefront and all the way in the back show how the multicolored lamps bring a greater sense of warmth but not necessarily any identifiable colors other than on the glass itself.

Photo Observation

  1. Taken in November of 2018 on a Nokia phone
  2. Bizarre
  3. Despite the fact that the actual subject of this image is incredibly bizarre, the lighting in the photo is also quite peculiar. This was taken in a basement, accounting for the lack of any natural light. As a result, the bright fluorescent lights give the room an almost sickening glow, and the lights appear to bleed out diagonally.

Photo Observation #4

2.) A photograph by Matthew Murphy for the musical “35mm: A Musical Exhibition”

3.) Bizarre

4.) While the subject of the photo is already arguably very bizarre, I feel that it is the lighting in this photo that really takes it to the next level. The vignette around the edge of the photo makes it seem like the room is dark except for the single spot light hitting the center, creating an ominous and threatening atmosphere. This light is clearly also coming from the side, as it half of the deer head and body are in shadow, and the shadow against the wall is also at a side angle. This creates a shadow puppet-like effect, and gives the image an extra layer of depth, evoking a much stronger emotion than if there was no shadow. The extreme contrasts between the highlights and shadows in the photo make the image disconcerting to look at. It makes me wonder what the story behind the image is. Most interestingly to me, it seems as though there is a slightly brighter light outlining the subject, which is most clearly seen on the hand. I wonder if that is an effect of the editing or how they got the light to do that?

Light Observation #5

  1. March 3, 2025; 10:12pm; John Adams Playhouse
  2. Guys and Dolls first dress rehearsal on the stage
  3. While being backstage left for Guys and Dolls, the song “Take Back Your Mink” came on. The girls came through the Hotbox and perform their number. But behind the curtain, I saw it from a tv screen that was live streaming what was happening on stage. Underneath this tv, I saw two actors watching from the first wing. Their faces had a light pink glow to them and had slight shadows of the traveler line and actors on the stage. This stuck out to me because they could have been in the dark with me watching from the tv but instead, they were watching while having the bright light in their faces.

Photo Observation #4

  1. Photo from Pinterest
  2. Bizarre “very strange or unusual”
  3. There is a single spotlight that has a gobo and gel that creates a bazaar type lighting. The gobo creates a wavy, abstract pattern that makes the floor seem like it is moving. The colors, blue, yellow, green, and pink, intermix with each other to create the feeling of movement. This creates a lively and vigorous feeling to the surrounding area. This is bizarre because most of the time in lighting for the stage, we don’t see lighting this bold. Typically if we see this type of lighting, it’s either just the gobo with a single color light, or all the different colors without the gobo.

Lighting Observation #4

China at some point.

Objective: It’s just gray, cloudy, and green on the mountain.

Standing on top of the rice field on the mountain, looking out, a feeling of calm washes over me. Because we weren’t allowed to have our phones on the trip, it was easy to just surround ourselves with the people around us, as well with the environment, just being in the moment, having memories for life and experiences not many will have.

Light Observation #4

  1. March 1st, 2025 at 2:00 pm – Looking out the bay window of my house
  2. I am looking outside my bay window and see clouds that look like a painting, with bright white tops, dark shadowed bottoms, and the sun peeking through as they pass by.
  3. Outside my bay window, the sky stretches like a canvas, brushed with clouds that look almost painted. The sun peeks through in fleeting moments, casting a golden glow that dances along their edges. Some clouds are heavy with shadow, their undersides dipped in deep gray, making the bright white tops seem even more radiant. The contrast sharpens the soft details, as if the sky itself is sculpting them in light and shadow.

Lighting Observation #4

2/27/2025 Black Box, Shapiro Hall, Hofstra University

Objective: Dim light shines over the cast of Trojan Women. There are several light beams pointing at us but it is not bright to the point where it lights the box too much. They seem to be white with very little yellow.

The blackbox is such an ominous spot on campus and it’s perfect for the show. The lights are strategically placed to allow the darkness to remain. Trojan Women is a spooky and depressing play, even with the normal lights of the stage and no modifications we feel like we are in the ruins of Troy. I feel pain around me due to emptiness and spots of darkness surrounding me. The shadow covering the guards face creates an assertive aura around us.

Photo Observation #3

Theme: Night Life

The calm tone of the background lights give a cozy feeling bringing in audience and consumers to the location. The warm lights make you feel at home and can make the night a more fun time. The lights coming from the other building create an atmosphere that is viewed as excited. The night is young and fun is just starting.
