Lighting Observation

WHEN? May 10th 12:00pm

WHERE? Hempstead NY Across the street from my house

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Sun shining off car roof

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I look out my window and my eyes are assaulted by the bright flash of light reflecting of the shiny roof of my neighbors cars. Bright and round, like looking into the sun itself.

Light Observation

  1. WHEN/WHERE: Friday, April 23rd, 2021; Noon; Lowe 106
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It’s bright and sunny outside and the windows are half-open, but all the lights are off.
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: There is a sort of peacefulness that comes with the studio being dark. The sunlight shimmering through the windows offers just enough for the room to feel alive but at rest. Work can still be done, but there is no need to stress or panic. All is calm.

Light Observation

  1. WHEN/WHERE: Thursday, April 15, 2021; 1:15 pm-my room in Suffolk Hall
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It is gray and rainy outside. There are no lights on in my room
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I wish so badly that I could survive without the warmth from my lamp or the gentle glow from my fairy lights. Even though there’s a blanket of clouds outside my window the sun is lost underneath it somewhere. However, the darkness in my room is overwhelming. The dim white light that is washing my room is not enough for the middle of the afternoon.

Lighting Observation

  1. WHEN/WHERE: Monday, April 5th, 2021; 2:15pm; outside of Roosevelt Hall
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sky is completely clear. The cherry blossoms are blooming.
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Spring has sprung. The warm pink flowers glow in the sunlight and look magical against the cool blue sky. The shadows of these magical trees provide a safe haven from the brightness.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/7/2021 – 5:40 – road leading into CV Starr

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sunlight shines from the right of the sky, barely behind the top corner of the building, yet illuminating the entire structure. CV Starr’s windowed side walls glow from the white light that shines upon it, reflecting it around the surrounding areas and lighting the freshly blossomed petals of the University’s trees.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The windows make the structure of the new building turn into rays of light themselves as the sunlight hits them, making for a stunning, sparkling effect. Although the building is not brand, brand new, the way the light the corners of the building makes it look sparkling. This building looks completely different in the Spring.

Lighting Observation

  1. WHEN/WHERE: April 1, 2021: 7pm – my dorm room in Suffolk Hall.
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The overhead light is off. My roommate’s desk lamp is providing the most light. Her fairy lights are on and my lamp is on as well.
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Chaos. On one side of the room, it is warm and gentle. On the other, a blaring white void. There is a happy medium, but it is difficult to focus when there are bright stars everywhere that are not uniform.

Light Observation

  1. WHEN/WHERE: Midnight, March 24th 2021, my bedroom
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The only lights on are my roommate’s fairy lights which are on one half of the room.
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The room is as dark as night except for a few twinkling stars. The warm yellow glow is not so bright as it keeps me from falling asleep, but just light enough to allow me to wind down with ease without being sucked into blackness. This cozy wash of light reminds me of lying outside and looking at a starry sky, minus the cold.

Light Observation

WHEN? March 26th, 2021

WHERE? Hofstra Campus

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Sun casting shadows of trees onto the grass

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The warmth of the sun touching my skin, the trees overhead rustling in the wind. I duck underneath the branches, finding a retreat from the day within the shadow cast along the grass. Yet I still see sun, just one step beyond the shade.

Light Observation

    1. WHEN/WHERE: March 11, 2021; 3:48pm; Outside by Nassau/Suffolk
    2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It’s slightly overcast outside, but you can still see the Sun through the clouds. It’s not too bright.
    3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The Sun’s blinding rays are dimmed with patchy clouds. Everything feels warm and serene with this even wash of sunlight and the light blue tint from the sky. The rays bounce off a bush with newly blossoming flowers that I hadn’t noticed before. Their yellow petals are a gentle reminder that winter is coming to an end.

Light Observation

WHEN? March 10th, 20221

WHERE? Lowe 106

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Fluorescent Lights in Ceiling

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The stark white light above me. So many rows of bulbs line the ceiling. Too many for this time of night. A row goes out and our eyes can finally adjust no longer overwhelmed by the army that shines above.
