Photo Observation #1

  • February 4, 2024, Hofstra University, Constitution Hall. Photo taken by me.
  • Sunrise/Sunset
  • This picture gives me a strange sense of optimism. The blue, yellows, pinks and reds, feel very warm and comforting in a way. The sunset feels as if it is saying that, although it is February and it is cold out, summer is around the corner, we just had to hold out a little longer. I think people associate sunrises with change and new beginnings, but I personally believe that sunsets are the start of new change and that is what this picture reminds me of, especially with where I was in my personal life when I took this picture.

Photo Observation 2/11/25

(My photo posted twice and I do not know how to get rid of it, I am sorry)

This photo was taken in July of 2023 at Old Orchard Beach, Maine. My sister and I woke up early to watch the sunrise on the beach.

Theme: Sunrise/sunset

Description: The sun rose at 5 something that morning, meaning we had to be up no later than 4:50 in order to walk down to the beach in time to see it. It was just cloudy enough to give the light some obstacles to move through, giving the sand a patchy glow when the sun finally rose. Deep layers of red, orange, and pink poked through the clouds and painted the waves a blurry mix of colors, creating a stunning image on the beach.

Photo Observation #1

  1. December 25, 2024, 7:14am, Walt Disney World, my photo
  2. Sunrise / Sunset
  3. It was Christmas morning. The sky was radiating a soft blue sky with rays of pink and purple clouds. Walking towards the main entrance, the street lamps were still lit from the night before while we hear children laughing from the steam boat and soft piano songs of Disney music. The weather was slightly unpredictable making some parts of the sky darker, but nothing could beat the light colors filling up the sky.

Photo Observation #1

2.)  I took this picture near a pond in my home town in December 2022.

3.) Sunrise/Sunset

4.) The bright amber light of the sun look as if it is trying to burst through the thick layer of clouds. The amber blends into a pinkish-red which spans the rest of the sky, creating cracks in the blanket of clouds. The beautiful mirage of colors reflects onto the surface of the water below it, making it feel as if the sunset is even more expansive. The clouds also made the grass in the foreground and background shadowed and darker, since there is no light on them. This makes it so that the bright colors of the sunset are the focus of the scene.

Lighting Observation #1

1)January 10, 2025, 23:40(11:40pm) Venice, Italy

2) Objective Description: It’s nighttime by the water (of course), and the only visible light is from the restaurants and the boats.

3) Subjective Description: Having just finished dinner with my family, we decided to take a short stroll while eating gelato around the small part of Venice that we were on. Being able to walk around Venice during the day was cool, but when the sun went down, it was like a whole new city in a way; it was incredible, and the sounds from restaurants and the water.

Lighting Observation #1

  • Inside David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, Friday, February 7th, 2025, 9:20 pm
  • Objective Description: Beams of blue and yellow LED lights shine and brighten the dark arena from the center stage.
  • Subjective Description: The arena gets dark; the audience waits anxiously for the show to start. The only light we get is the ones from the stage, blue and gold representing Hofstra pride. It gives a warm welcome to whoever is about to “perform”; it’s a sign of support from our community. The lights come up from the stage as if they were fireworks; these lights give the performers a feeling of trust and strength.

Light Observation #1

  1. February 7th, 2025, 11:46 pm – Outside my Bedroom Window
  2. I am describing the street lamp outside my window, flickering on and off, casting flashes of light onto the tree in front of my house.
  3. Looking out my window, I see the street lamp stuttering in and out of darkness, its light erratic and unsettling. It flickers like a broken strobe, cutting through the stillness of the night with an unnatural pulse. Each flash momentarily reveals the tree in front of my house, its branches twisting in stark shadows that vanish just as quickly as they appear. The quiet outside feels thick, almost frozen in time, but the unsteady glow makes it seem as if something is lurking—just beyond the reach of the light.

Lighting Observation #1

1) February 7th, 8:53am, A friend’s room

2)Objective Description: A dark room with a  white ceiling covered with LED strip lights, a window to the left side with the morning sunlight shining through the closed curtains.

3)Subjective Description: Upon waking up in the morning the first thing I see are purple LED strip lights that hang on the white ceiling. They’re old and some of them are burnt out, so some of the purple lights have red patches in them. It’s still early so I notice there is a stillness in the room. Sunlight is creeping through parts of the curtain that are not completely closed. There are pictures that hang all over the walls in the room, some are of posters of bands, some of puzzles that a friend of mine has done, some pictures of things that he is interested in, and the LED strip lights reflect off of them. The room is quiet and the only noise that can be heard is the ceiling fan that is on. Even though the room isn’t mine, and even though I don’t live there, everything about the room makes me feel safe. As I look up at the LED strip lights I curl up into the warmth of the blanket and drift off back to sleep.

Light Observation #1

1)  Friday 02/07/2025 @ 9:41 pm sitting on my bed looking out the door

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The candle lamp by my bedside illuminates my room with a red glow from the Christmas candle below it. From the main entranceway, a stream of light peeks down the side hallway leading to my bedroom. The main light on the wall is off igniting a cozy atmosphere.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Within the walls of the small bedroom a quiet warmth quells the worries of the day. Reading my book under the warm red glow I see shadows dance, stretching and shrinking with every page turn. The smell of the candle fills the room with the feeling of home. In a corner, of a house, with friends but still alone the candlelight is a hug from my mother. The light from the open door begs interaction asking for a moment with a friend but the house is empty. So I return to my book and Christmas smells wondering when houses feel like homes.

Lighting Observation #1

1) February 7, 2:27 am, my dorm

2) All the lights are off except for the red glow of the motion-sensors for the automatic lights above mine and my roommates desks. They don’t put off much light but the led-clocks of the microwave and my roommates alarm clock feel especially bright in the dark room

3) The room is completely dark. I can see mine and my roommates desks that are lit by the red-automatic sensors above them, hers is neat and mine is cluttered, one of my goals for tomorrow- or today- was to organize it. If I turn around it’ll be dark again and I can go back to sleep. I can’t read the clock on the microwave that’s close to my bed but I can see the blue-LED clock and it feels strangely bright and alien in the dark room. I can see my roommates alarm clock, the LED-clock is red and it reads 2:27 am. I realize with dread that my alarm will go off in 3 1/2 hours and I anxiously try to force myself to go back to sleep.
