Lighting Observation 2/9/24

2/6/24 – 1:00 PM – Bits & Bytes

Objective Description: The sunlight was shining through a window with blinds, and the light coming through the route holes created little ovals of light on the table and chair next to the window.

Subjective Description: Each droplet of light projected a small moment of peace. They wouldn’t be there for long, but they shone brightly as the sun tried to pry its way into the room.

Photo Observation #1

I didn’t have any sunset pictures on my phone, so I found this one online. I really like a sunset over the water. The way the light reflects off of the water creates a cool moving texture. I also like the way the light hits the bottom of the clouds at the top of the image. You can just see the outline of the top of the cloud a bit highlighted as well which looks pretty cool.

Sunset

A final glimpse of the sunset with the crescent moon already in the sky. The light colors of the blue & orange gradient contrast the dark tones of the tree branches and emphasize the bright shine of the white moon and lamp-post glare

Sunset Photo

This is a photo that I took last February 24 at 6:04PM. The sunset matches the colors of the lights on the building perfectly, and it really makes the tower seem tall. It feels like the building is growing out of the sunset, which makes it hold power and focus. The sunset also draws more attention to the crescent moon up in the sky. I chose this photo not just for the sunset itself, but because it highlights the other parts of the setting.

Sunset Picture !

.

I took this photo last semester in October! For some reason, all the best sunsets are on Sunday afternoons outside the Student Center. I love how the blue and orange contrast just enough to make the prettiest-looking clouds against the light blue sky. This is one of my favorite sunset pictures.

Sunset Photo Observation

I took this picture last semester when I went home for Thanksgiving break. This picture was taken towards the end of the sunset, and I love how it has a more neutral color scheme than the classic purple and pink sunset. The way the orange-to-grey gradient reflects on the water as well is really pretty. The contrast of the shadowy plane and docks also gives a nice contrast to the picture against the lighter orange and grey.

Lighting Observation 2/9

Date: 2/6/2024 7:43 am

Location: Outside of Colonial Square

Objective: The Reflection of a window is interrupted by my shadow as I walk by, creating symmetrical motion.

Subjective: The morning light is bounces off of glass from millions of miles away. As a stranger walks past, he catches the light on his skin. In his wake lies a cold darkness that follows his every movment, solitary. However, in this one small space, the absense of light creates another absense, and the shadow is not alone. For a breif moment, it has a friend.

When looking at sunsets/sunrises, the thing that strikes me most is not the light but how it influences the shadows. This piece, with the shadows of the trees through what appears to be a sheer curtain, diffusing the light, creates a wonderful shape with positive and negative space. The brightness fading upwards is also a beautiful moment.
