Sunset Photo

Theme: sunrise/sunset

Photo taken by me on Jan. 18th, 2023, 4:58pm.

I took this photo on Tel Aviv beach in Israel in January. I’m very fond of sunsets, and my dorm room at Hofstra – where I’ve lived since freshman year – has a west-facing window, so I’m lucky enough to get to see many sunsets behind the Manhattan skyline. Those are pretty, but the sunset on the beach in Tel Aviv was different from what I was accustomed to, which made it more special. I’ve always been intrigued by the quality of a sunset that is both orange and pink and when you say it’s one it seems to appear as the other. In this photo the gradient of the sky from a pale blue-gray to an orangey-yellow to that bright orangey-pink is stunning. The way the light makes the water shine in an almost metallic way, contrasted with the complete lack of reflection from the sandy beach, creates a beautiful image. It also brings back nice memories of my trip to Israel – I was with two close friends when I saw this sunset, and now it will always remind me of them.

Brennan Sunset Photo

From: My camera roll, taken November 22nd 2022. Sunset from my bedroom window in Hempstead, NY.

Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

This was a photo from the end of last semester. I had just wrapped on a film project I had been working on, and this was my last night in New York before heading home for Thanksgiving break. I have a West facing window in my bedroom, and often have a chance to view the sunset over the trees and buildings. This particular sunset struck, it had already crossed the horizon (at least as far as I could tell from my perspective) and the deep twilight blue was taking over the sky — broken by a strip of glowing orange as the last streams of sunlight bent around the far curve of the Earth. The glow from the light silhouetted the neighborhood, which turned into a mass of shape and form. It looked pretty cool, so I took a few photos. I was in the sunset of the semester, and that Thanksgiving was the first real break I had from working on any big projects in months. It was a great moment of catharsis knowing I could relax for a while.

Description: I took this picture standing on the dock at my best friend’s lake house. I liked all the different colors that were in the sky at that moment, as well as the orange that was reflected in the surface of the lake.

I was feeling a little homesick so I decided look through some of my favorite pictures from the past year when I came across a picture from our “Senior Sunset,” a day in which all the seniors in my class met up at a local beach to see the sunset. This photo especially reminded me of the beautiful sunset we watched that night sitting on those rocks. I remember the sun being such a vibrant gold that it almost hurt to watch, but you had to in order to see the rest of the pinks and purples hovering over the horizon. I remember it feeling surreal to witness something so beautiful.

Sunset Photo

April 5, 2022 – Picture taken by me at my best friends house (Atlanta, GA)

Theme: Sunrise/ Sunset

As I was leaving my best friend Katie’s house, we both pointed out how beautiful the sunset was, which prompted me to take this picture. The orange color makes me feel very calm and relaxed because it symbolizes the end of my work and school day and the start of me being able to relax. The warm light also makes me feel nostalgic because I miss being able to drive to my best friend’s house to see her whenever I wanted to.

I chose this photo since I had the opportunity to see the Eifel Tower in person at both sunrise and sunset the same week. In my opinion it is one of the most majestic structures, and the purple light surrounding it with the warm pink to orange in the background lighting makes it more regal and majestic. The photo transports me to a wedding day being held in a castle with princess story feels, the perfect lighting, perfect weather, and perfect location.

Lighting Observation

Date: 5/17/22

Time: 3:42am

Location: Lowe 216

Objective Observation: The top floor of Axinn library is visible just barely over the trees and is the only light really visible out the window.

Subjective Observation: It is pitch black outside as it is night and there are a lot of trees covering view of the sky. Peaking out from the trees is a narrow band of light that is the top floor of Axinn. It reminds me of a UFO as it just looks like a rectangle of light amidst nothing. It is piercing as it is in great contrast against the dark sky. It also has a yellow-ish light which contrasts against the cool white that comes from the outdoor lights below the window by Low.

Lighting Observation

Date: 2/9/22

Time: 5pm

Location: Constitution

Objective Observation: The sun is beginning to set but it hasn’t set enough where there’s a lot of colors and there is not a cloud in the sky.

Subjective Observation: Without clouds or pollution or anything to color the sky, the sunset seems lonely. The lone sun is shining brightly and is at a point in its descent where it seems almost level with where I am standing on the 5th floor. The sun looks like a spotlight if you stare at it as it is just a small bright circle amongst a vast sea of light blue. It doesn’t look like a traditional sunset but is still very bright and very cool to observe.

Lighting Observation

Date: 5/12/22

Time: 12:50pm

Location: a small park in the upper west side

Objective Observation: Sunlight shines in through a slotted wooded overhang onto a man-made waterfall and a lot of green plants.

Subjective Observation: The brightness of the sunlight seemed to greatly amplify the green that is found in the plants and trees surrounding the waterfall to an almost ungodly vibrance. The slotted overhang creates an interesting texture where the light shines as if there was a gobo in the sun. The slots create an interesting contrast in where the light shines as the patches where the sunlight comes through are crazy bright whereas the patches blocked by the slots are really dark.

Lighting Observation

Date: 05/07/22

Time: 9:30am

Location: Admissions building

Objective Observation: The lights are on in the building but it is heavily overcast so there isn’t much light coming in from outside even though it is the morning.

Subjective Observation: It’s the morning but the light makes it feel like it isn’t. The skylight overhead shows the overcast sky which seems almost like its shining darkness instead of light. Usually on a morning in the admissions office the atmosphere is light and airy as the skylight provides a lot of extra brightness but with this heavy of overcast, there is little supplemental light.
