Surreal Photo Observation

Theme: Surreal

This picture captures a vibrant red sunset. I’ve always found bright red sunsets to be so mystifying as a typical sunset consists of softer yellows and oranges. However, this bright red captures the passion and intensity the hue normally makes me think of. Seeing the typical blue sky be slowly enveloped by this punch of red feels truly surreal.

Prompt Hunt

This photo felt surreal to me because this is not naturally occurring light. It reminds me of the burning bush from the bible and it just feels a little magical.

Photo Observation-Surreal

I chose this photo because of the unnatural colors of the light. The red and blue light is not natural light colors that we would naturally see.

Lighting Observation

Date: 04/08/23

Time: Around 6pm

Location: My friend’s room

Objective: My friend had just recently installed these set of led strip lights on the walls of her room. These LED lights had many different settings, as well as a connection to her phone where the lights can blink and change at the rhythm of a song.

Subjective: The bright, vibrant colors produced by the LED strips reminded me of a nightclub or concert venue. Especially when it started switching and flashing to the beats of a song in her phone. The lights really transformed the style of her room, which is normally pretty simple and monotone.

Lighting Observation

Date: 4/7/23

Time: Around 8PM EST

Location: My dorm room

Objective: The lights from the hallway coming into my room from under, and around the door’s small gaps.

Subjective: The light reminds me of science fiction movies, the ones where interstellar aliens, or of other beings descending down behind a door and flooding every open gap with light. While the light isn’t nerve wracking, it makes me think about what could be coming if there were to be something behind the door.

Lighting Observation

April 7th, 2023

Time: 7:30 pm

Location: Narragansett Rhode Island

I was driving home and I saw a sunset.

As I was driving to my hometown I saw a beautiful gradient of orange and pink which covered the horizon above the trees. As I continued to drive for the next several minutes I watched the sunset turn from pastel pink and blues to vibrant combination of magenta, red, and orange. This beautiful array of colors felt to represent the hope and tranquility that comes with returning home.

Lighting Observation

Date: 4/6/23

Place: Outside Axinn Library

Time: 11:15pm

Objective: The light from a post shines down on the cobbled pathway, with shadows from the numerous trees.

Subjective: The light shining down on a warm night made me feel very safe. The shadows at the trees over the pathways though sent a little fear, from the eerie way the light dissapears under them.

Lighting Observation

Date: 4/2/23
Time: 7:08pm
Location: Merrick Theatre and Center For the Arts
Objective observation: I’m here to see a production of Heathers, so the stage is lit before the production begins. Three strip lights above the stage (downstage left, center, and right) create blue circles of light on the stage. Against the back of the set there are three sections of differently-colored lights, one for each Heather: stage left is green, center stage is red, and stage right is kind of orange-yellow, although it mostly gets lost in the red.
Subjective observation: The idea is there, and the colors of the lights make sense for Heathers (including the blue for Veronica). However, the execution feels a little sloppy and obvious, which is probably to be expected with a low-budget production like this one. It has a small community theatre vibe about it.
