Light Observation

  1. DATE-TIME-LOCATION: January 30th, 2020 – 11:00pm – my dorm room.
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The soft white light from an oil diffuser brightened and dimmed the dark room. There is a change in the strength of the shadows against the wall and ceiling, widening and condensing.
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: My oil diffuser was brightening and dimming based on the speed of the diffuser and it felt calming to observe. The soft glow around the perimeter of the diffuser created a gentle ambiance for my dorm room, and made me feel more relaxed, which I appreciated.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Sunday, January 26th at 9:40 PM my dorm room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The new LED strip lights, hun, up in my room casting on the toned blue walls in my dorm.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I plugged into the wall and watched them illuminate the room from the dark, I was surprised not to see the color I had selected. Due to the walls being tinted blue, it distorted the colors. As we pressed the smooth rotating button we watched as the colors changed and show new colors then the pure colors on the remote control

Photo Observation

1- This is a sunset photo I took on the docs right by my house in Ocean City New Jersey on November 15th 2019 at 5:36

2 – Sunrise/Sunset

3 – Looking at this picture, you can see as the water acts as a mirror reflecting what seems like almost a perfect replica of the sky above. The Rippling across the water shows just how to face the water goes. The red and yellow colors bring the idea of warmth to my mind even though I remember being cold when taking the picture. Also, I think the shadows that are cast from the cloud onto the water are beautiful.

2) THEME: Sunset/Sunrise

3) DESCRIPTION: It has been nearly impossible to dodge Kobe Bryant tribute content while browsing social media platforms this past week. The now late, great NBA superstar’s passing came as a tragic shock to all who ever witnessed him dominate the basketball court donning that iconic purple and yellow Los Angeles Lakers color combination. In the early evening hours on the day of his passing, the sunset over LA wore those rich colors in his honor. The gradient of the sky and the vibrance of the purple seems ethereal as it sits above the city of Los Angeles like a crown sitting on the head of a deserving king. The colors are hopeful yet comforting as they surround the mourning metropolitan. You may argue that the sun’s setting is capable of creating such a colorful lighting master piece on any given day of the year, however on January 26th there is no doubt in my mind who those electric purple and yellow hues were for.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Wednesday night in my dorm room.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A soft yellow glow emitted from the string lights hung across the western wall of my room and the stark gleam of the IPad’s white screen on my face.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This past Wednesday night my friend and I were in my room discussing classes and watching movies. I really believe that I am allergic to the generic, fluorescent light fixture that comes mounted to the ceiling of each university dorm room; I prefer instead to light my room with a thirty-two bulb set of string lights. They are bright enough to illuminate each corner of the room but just soft enough to put you in a meditative mood. My friend turned to me, the high points of her face washed in a comfy yellow haze as if she had applied a sunflower pigmented blush to her high cheekbones. She demanded that I draw a portrait of her on her IPad using the new Apple Pen she recently gifted herself. As I scribbled on the tablet, she called attention to the white glow that the IPad cast upon the T-zone of my face. As I glanced over to the mirror to witness this lighting moment for myself, she remarked that this scene looked very much like a back to school advertisement. We laughed.

Photo Observation

  1. Taken outside my work in September of 2016.
  2. Sunrise/Sunset
  3. As I am released from my eight hour shift peddling overpriced gym memberships and watery protein shakes, I am greeted by the burning orange of the setting sun battling with the dull blue-gray of the encroaching night, with the cirrus clouds absorbing the receding rays before assimilating into the darkness. It speaks of freedom; of a long awaited ending and promise of a beginning; of a closing of an era; of a dying God.

Photo Observation

  1. Title: “Sunset in the Bronx”
  2. Discovered through Imgur, uploaded by “symbiiotic” on January 3, 2017. Time unknown.
  3. Theme: Sunrise/Sunset
  4. This photo is a blend of colors towards the end of a sunset, an evening sky covered with dark blues, purples, and the tail end of light pinks and bright yellow colors. The photo was taken from a train platform high above the ground. I chose this photo because it feels close to the end of a night where things are winding down from the day and it made me feel at ease. I like the perspective from the platform, which is outside, above ground, and in between lamp posts. Even those lights hitting the concrete create this nighttime feeling, contrasting the vibrancy of the sunset occurring quite nicely. I also enjoy the smallest detail, the green signal light in the far left, which is distant but still illuminating.

Photo Observation

Cameron, Sunset/Sunrise
1. I took this photo at my lake house in Gray, Maine, evening (exact time unknown)
2. Sunset/Sunrise theme
3. The contrast between orange in the lower sky, deeper orange reflection in water, and black and blue on the top and bottom of this image give it a warm feeling and helps draw the eyes to different subjects within the photo

Photo Observation

1.) Photo was taken by me on November 10th at 4:44pm on the Unispan.

2) Sunset/Sunrise

3) The sky looked as if it was carefully painted in vibrant colors of coral, gold, and lavender above the Nether-span.

Lighting Observation

1) Saturday, January 25th at around 11:30pm in my boyfriend’s room in Hicksville, NY

2) The light of a salt lamp casting a orangeish, pink glow over everything, except for the shadows which were a dark blue.

3) My boyfriend and I were talking late at night and we had a salt lamp on. In the dark room, it illuminated half of his face in a warm glow, and the other half was in shadow, a deep blue. The way the light bisected his face was a beautiful contrast.
