Lighting Observation

1) Estabrook 7th floor, 10:15pm, 2/16/2022

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: My friend got what she calls a “sunset lamp” for Christmas and let it illuminate the room. It shone and spun multicolored beams of light across the ceilings and walls.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The colors danced across the barren walls and frolicking bodies. The beams of light rhythmically pulsed and drifted across the room, illuminating smiles and creating laughter. Fueled by the glowing beams of light and collective joy, for just a moment, we all lived in pure bliss. The jubilation shone almost as brightly as the sunset lamp itself.

Cold

2) ATTRIBUTE: Still from IUERTA e’s video of their snowy walk around Manhattan in January 2021.

3) THEME: Cold

4) DESCRIPTION: The lights in this photo are highlighting the snowstorm, since the tiny flakes would be much more difficult to see without the light. The absence of light in the sky sets the photo after nightfall, meaning even without the storm, the air would be much colder.

Lighting Observation #3

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/18/22 5:47 PM somewhere in Staten Island

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A series of street lamps all turned on at once.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I had already been driving home for over 2 hours and the sun was finally setting. I realized that when I left the sun was out, but as I was driving the sky had become cloudy, clear again, and now dark except for the row of street lamps in front of me illuminating the road. I looked around me and realized that almost all of the other cars had turned their headlights on, but since my eyes were adjusting with the light I did not realize that I should turn mine on too. (Oops.) I turned mine on and also observed that the GPS on my phone had switched itself into dark mode.

Photo Observation

Date: 2/17/2022

Time: 3:23pm

Location: My living Room

Objective Description: Sunlight shining through the small window at the top of the front door onto the wall next to the door.

Subjective Description: The light cuts across the wall creating a sharp line leading downward. The shape of the window illuminates the wall creating the image of a sun out of the light itself. The image seems like it was created out of thin air, a bright mark against the stark background of nothingness.

Lighting Observation

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : February 18, 2022 at 9:03 pm , Roosevelt Field Mall Parking Lot

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The street lights in the Roosevelt Field Mall Parking Lot. The lot is empty except for one car with its headlights on.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The lone car in the parking lot is a bright spot of light in a dimly lit parking lot. The single car light in contrast to the bright street lights creates a sense of conflict. In an almost David and the Goliath comparison, the two light sources each seem to fight for the focus of the viewer.

Lighting Observation

Date/Time/Location: 2:05 pm / February 17th / on an airplane

Objective Description: I was sitting in the window seat of a plane and could see solid white and yellow tones in the sky above a bed of clouds.

Subjective Description: Usually, I feel like airplanes “ride the clouds” because they are typically quite close to the bottom of the airplane. However, on this flight the clouds were quite far out of reach from the plane. This occurrence allowed more sunlight to permeate the airplane walkways through the windows. Moreover, I felt as though the sky was far whiter than usual… but not a harsh white, more of an eggshell color.

This newfound shade of sunlight as well as the distance from the clouds made me feel as though we were floating too far out of the atmosphere. While it was a fun and peculiar new experience, I was also a little nervous because I have never before seen the sky in that way.

Photo Observation

Theme: Romance

Description: The soft pink pastels in the sky blend with the cool-toned blues of the ocean and muted-tone sand. The bright white displays a sharp contrast to the natural blending of all the other colors present. When I think of romance, I think of relaxation and gentle colors / atmosphere. Similarly, the sky above illuminates mellow pinks onto the ocean, establishing a tranquil, romantic atmosphere.
