Lighting Moment #7
- March 22, 10:30am – On a walk in my town with my Dad
- It was an overcast day, it had rained the night before so the ground was still wet, and even though it was chilly, it felt warm for March. There weren’t many flowers blooming yet, but the weather has been wet enough so the grass was very green, especially against the gray sky. Everything was just very colorful and had the scent of spring.
- The lighting was one of those cloudy days that doesn’t feel dreary. It’s cool and calm and makes you want to go outside. These happen sometimes in the summer and are very refreshing, but they also happen in the spring and both times the brightness but coolness of the gray sky makes me happy and excited to enjoy the day, especially if you get up and out early.
Lighting Observation #6
- 3/22 1:30 pm in my backyard looking out on Shapiro and the library
- Complete overcast, not a shred of warmth in the light around. The trees in the backyard are illuminated but grey and drab. The colors all kind of meld together in a pool of brown and dark green.
- It’s clearly the middle of the day so everything is illuminated but nothing really feels alive. The lack of direct light makes the shadoes soft and harder to notice. Everything around me is lit evenly, no cracks in the clouds to let any extra light in. Despite this, I can’t help but squint as I look up at the sky. It almost hurts to look straight up, my eyes overwhelmed by a sun that I can’t even find in the sky.

6th Photo Observation – Spring – KS

- October 4th, 2017 – 5:41pm – Outside my friend’s house on the sidewalk
- Spring + an Angle Color/Lighting Key diagram
- This photo was taken in spring, of a flower drawn in spring colors. I drew this rose using chalk outside of my friend’s house. The sun was starting to set when I took the photo so I could remember what I drew.

7th Lighting Observation – KS
- 03/21/2026 – 12:58pm – Vander Poel Hall Dorm Room
- There is a streak of white light reflecting on the top of an unopened tissue box in my girlfriend’s dorm room. It is about two inches think and is coming from the light shining through the closed blinds in her room.
- The cold reflection on the tissue box emits the feeling of abandonment or sorrow. The box is a cold blue color and feels stale with the cold white light on the top of the box.

Lighting Moment #6
-
3/12/26, In my dorm
- My blinds were closed but I could tell it was gray and wet outside. Half raining, and it was casting a cold kind of light around my room because I had no other lights on. It was early in the morning so the sun (even though I couldn’t see it) was still low making everything darker.
- It was warmer that day so it felt more like a warm summer rain that is actually enjoyable. For some reason it also made me nostalgic. It reminded me of going camping in the summer. I felt like I had seen that exact type of lighting before. It felt cozy, and cool all at the same time.
Lighting Observation #2
1) March 12th 7:50pm (John Adam Playhouse)
2) I arrived to the playhouse 10 minutes earlier to get myself situated to get ready to watch “A Little Night Music”. I was sitting in the stage right corner near the edge of the row. So, there was not a lot of light coming through. To be honest, there was not really any light hitting where I was sitting at all. Compared to the left side and way up in the front of the theater, there was a drastic difference in where the playhouse lights were hitting.
3) I thought that it made the playhouse look aesthetically pleasing because you got all this bright light hitting these people and then the light starts to cut itself off once you get farther back. I use this word a lot but it does give a melancholy vibe to it. Especially during the emotional scenes, the dark “void” that I was sitting in made the impact of those specific scenes a lot deeper. It made me sit in the sadness with them since there was no type of brightness to get me out of it.
Lighting Observation #6
1) March 13th, 2026 at my home (6:40 pm)
2) I had recently came back to Brooklyn for spring break and I was relaxing in my families new apartment when I noticed the sun starting set. The curtain was open so the sunset was beaming through the entire living room area. It also helped that when I looked out the window, I saw how bright outside looked and how the orange hue made everything look very vibrant.
3) Considering the fact that this is a new apartment, this was the first sunset that I have seen inside this place. The orangish yellow light made me feel a sense of belonging in a way. This is still a new environment for me so seeing how this light made me feel a lot more relaxed. When I think of Orange, I think of optimism and happiness and that matched exactly how I felt moving in.
Lighting Observation #7
- March 13th – 5:42pm – My room
- The orange light emitting from my DS as it charges in the corner of the room. The rest of my room is completely dark with the curtains drawn. The orange light is casting on the wall.
- As I lay in bed exhausted from a long week and taking a beautiful midterm at the student center, I am getting very sleepy. I have drawn the curtains and turned all the lights off. It is very dark in this room. However, there is one very small light. I have my DS charging in the corner of the room on the floor. As it charges there is a small but bright orange light indicating that it is charging coming from the DS. This light makes it hard for me to rest, as after a long week of stress, I want to play Pokemon so bad. It is interesting how this small light can create such a stir in my slumber for so many reasons. It is almost as if the small light is calling out to me, telling me a nap is not necessary, it’s time to game. Something about the intensity of this small light makes me think I just might listen. The darkness has once again been defeated by the smallest lights appealing to my senses.
7th Lighting Observation
- March 13th, 2026 – 5:31 pm – Student Center
- I was sitting in the Student Center with Grant. We were sitting in the seats between the sushi place and the pasta place. This was an interesting intersection, as there was lighting come from each restaurant, but also lighting coming from above us as well. All the lights were in different tones, which made the space feel very alive despite not many people being around. I noticed I felt very awake in the space as well, not tired despite the long day I had.
- From the left and right of us was warm lighting coming from the restaurants. The lighting above us was a cool white. This cast a lot of shadows at different angles. There were warm shadows on either side of us, but cooler ones directly below.
