Lighting Observation #11

  1. 4/24/2025 – Verdis Westbury
  2. The lights in our room for formal.
  3. The lights are a calm color once everyone walks in. Not bright as to scare us away, but very calm and mellow. It’s light blue, but it illuminates everything. The lights stretch out through the entire room, covering every corner of the ceiling. The lights are calling to me as if they were saying to relax and enjoy the night.

Lighting Observation #11

April 24, 2025, 2:12 PM, outside of Calkins Hall

The light coming through the leaves and flowers of the trees

While walking around campus on Thursday, it was a very nice day out. It was bright, sunny, and warm, everyone was outside. While walking outside of Calkins Hall, I noticed the way that the sunlight filtered through the leaves and flowers of the trees. On the ground, only the dark shadows were visible, but when looking up into the trees themselves, you could see the light greens as the light came through the leaves, and the pinks and whites of the light coming through the flower petals.

  2. Small dressing room in the playhouse. The overhead light is off and all of the mirror lights are on as we do our makeup.
  3. The vibes are good in the dressing room as the music plays. The warm glow from the mirror lights hums in anticipation as people come in and out of the room in excitement for the second show of the faculty concert. Someone next to me is braiding hair as I finish the final touches of my eyelashes. The lights highlighting all of the details of my makeup.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 04/25/25

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The vanity lights in the dressing room of the playhouse

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION:The dressing room lights shine warm and soft, wrapping those in front of them in a cozy glow. They brighten my face just right, helping me see every detail as I get ready. It feels like they’re cheering me on, turning the mirror into a stage where I can be whoever I want to be.

Lighting Observation #11

  1. Thursday, April 24th 2025 at 1:56PM–sitting on a bench directly facing Barnard Hall.
  2. No clouds are present in the sky, making the sun shine very bright. The bench I’m sitting on isn’t in the path of any trees, so there isn’t any shade. However, the faux balcony secured to the front of Barnard Hall casts a harsh shadow over some of the flowers and bushes that frame the front entrance. Overall there is juxtaposition between these parallel scenes of warmth and light to the cold and dark.
  3. A bench sitting out of reach from shade is the best place to be while the sun is unshielded and shining bright. Its warmth is the ultimate comfort following a seemingly unending period of cold in February and March. However at this time of day, there is always a reminder of the less-than-favorable reality of the seasons: the sharp shadow that cuts through the flowers and shrubbery. The grey paints over what the sun would usually highlight–the vibrant pinks and greens of sprouts are deadened by their common enemy: the shade.

Photo Observation #10

Fall (photo emailed bc it won’t upload)

Light 5 @full, top light

Light 7 @full, L151, front light from house left

Light 8 @full, front light from house right

Light 3 & 6 @full, L328, bottom side lights from left and right

Light 1 & 2 @full, R369, top side lights from left and right

Top and Bottom cyc lights @full, alternating R15 and L328 every two lights

I tried to use the cyc lights to create sunset like colors in the background. I also used side light to add sunset and warm colors to the side of the person to show the time of day and also help with the season. I feel like fall is warm colors, so I used mostly those.

Spring

Light 9 @full, R055, window gobo, front light from far house right

Lights 5 @60, R365, top light

Lights 8 @60, R365, front light from house right

Light 7, @70, R364, front light from house left

Top cyc lights, @50, R065

To me, the most important part of this image was conveying the cathedral. I chose to show this by putting a window gobo in one of the lights. I also only used a few lights to try and make it dimmer since it is supposed to be kind of gothic. I was unsure of exactly how to make it feel like spring, especially since it was inside, but I tried to make it a little cooler, without being too cool because spring feels not as warm as summer and fall in my opinion.

Summer

Light 3&4 @full, top light from left and right

Light 5 @full, R365, top light

Light 6 @full, back light

Light 7 @90, L151, front light from house left

Light 8 @full, R54, front light from house right

Light 10 @full, front light

Top and Bottom cyc lights @ 70, R065

I tried to make the lights as bright and full as possible for summer. I also tried to get more straight overhead light since it was noon, and I added more back and side lights to really fill out the person. I made the light a lot warmer to convey the heat of summer.

Winter

Light 5 @70, R65, breakup gobo, top light

Light 7 @70, R64, front light from house left

Light 8 @70, R371, front light from house right

Light 9 @full, R365, front light from far house right

Conversely, I made the lights in this photo a lot cooler. I made the warmest light coming from the far right so that it would look like the sun was lower in the sky to show that it was the afternoon. I also added a gobo to provide texture that gives a snow-like effect.

Light Lab: Four Seasons

1) Fall Sunset in New England

For this look I wanted to express the warmth of fallen leaves and a bright orange sun about to drop below the horizon. I used high intensity and focus to give the effect of streaks of light like those that are created as the sun moves down and comes through the New England leaves. I first added a warm straw (R15) light on full coming from the upstage left diagonal to act as our “sun”. I hen began layering red, yellow and orange toned light primarily from the side to bring the effect of the ambient light bu with the sunset still being behind the individual so they would not be brightly lit from the front. I used a stack of R52, R60 and R23 on each side to give this effect.

2) Spring sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

For this look I wanted to bring the pinks and purples of a sunrise to the stage. I decided to have the light coming primarily from sage right as if we were seeing the light appear through the textured windows of a cathedral. I used gobos on some of the lights layering the dots and breakup gobos to give the effect of a textured window or light coming through trees. For this look i used a blend of warm and cool tones. he first two lights come from the high front diagonal (R52, dots) and high back diagonal (R60, breakup) with a soft focus to cast the texture over the stage. I then added a blue light on the low front diagonal on 75% (R68) to bring in the blue tone that to me brings in the coolness of a sunrise and the morning as opposed the warm nature of a sunset. I did use middel side light from both sides on full in the color R23 which is a warm orangy red to bring in the glow of the sun.

3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

For this look I wanted to express the hot, sticky and humid environment of noon on a summer day. I used a lot of warm toned lights totaling 9 instruments all together. I used the layering of front, side, and top light to create this look. I used angled top light in two different colors (R52 & R60) with a soft focus on full. R60 appears as light yellow but is in fact a no color blue that brings the layered effect to portray humidity when paired with the very light salmony R52. I used fron light no color on full to bring he bright nature o he stage. I used R60 for two more lights on a low diagonal from the front on 75% to bring this same bright nature. Finaly I paired the warm toned lights of R15 & L151 in stacked side light on 75% to bring the warm up the space.

4) Winter afternoon in Canada

For this look I used blue and no color blue to create a cool tone that would reflect the cold temperature of Canada. I started with two no color blue (R60) lights on full, slightly higher than head height on the back row to create the ambient light of the afternoon. I also added a no gel front light with a soft focus on also with the intention of giving the effect of ambient light. I then added a high front diagonal light with a soft focus and wide angle to cast the cool blue tone over the stage. I used R80 on 75%.  Finally I added a light on each of the low front diagonals with the L201 (full CT blue) on 75% just to bring the correct light level to the stage to mimic a winter afternoon. To me a winter afternoon is a bit brighter than in other seasons as I usually witness a bright white sky that reflects any given light even more. I also used he cyc with blue top light to create the cooling effect.

Four Seasons

FALL

I wanted to try to recreate something I’ve experienced a lot which is driving home from rehearsal in October or November just as the sun is setting and the feeling of just the sun directly in your eyes the whole 15 minute drive home. It also feels like the whole world is lit up in gold, especially paired with the changing leaves.1- Toplight @50 2- Sidelight FULL R15 3- Sidelight FULL L151 36 degrees medium focus 4- Sidelight FULL L193 w/ dots gobo soft focus

SPRING

I wanted to try to create a stained glass effect, with hardly any other lights except for the window. I added the cyc for some depth, and I thought it could maybe be a fireplace or something else. 1- FULL R54 @ 26 degrees w/ dots gobo sharp focus  2- FULL 36 degrees soft focus  3- FULL L192 @ 26 dots gobo medium focus 4- FULL R68 26 degrees breakup gobo sharp focus CYC full R21

SUMMER

To try to show the heat I turned on the haze for the lights, I had two sidelights at 70 degrees just to add to the atmosphere. The top lights are really intense and the guy is almst glowing, also adding to the heat.1- left front light FULL R51  2- front light FULL L151. 3- right front light FULL R1  4- left side light FULL 70 degrees  5- right side light FULL L201 70 degrees. CYC – full, custom color

I wanted something soft, not a lot of sharp focus on the lights. I didn’t want it all to just be white so I added some blues and pinks and purples to give variation, I was inspired by an impresionist painting of snow I saw at the Boston MFA. CYC- full R361. 1- FULL R54 70 degrees. 2- 50% R58 70 degrees dots gobo soft focus   3- FULL L201 70 degrees soft focus  4- FULL R58 70 degrees dots gobo soft focus 5- FULL R68 70 degrees soft focus

Four Season

Fall Sunset in New England:

I really wanted to focus on the colors I see within a New England sunset, especially leaning into the reds, oranges, and blues that I typically see. I started with a soft focused red color using gel R25 at the top middle of the stage at a 70 degree angle at full to create that softening of redness in the sky and around the sun. Then I put in the same spot an orange using gel R21 at a sharp focus at a 50 degree angle at full to represent the sun. I then put the other colors from side points around this spot light to represent the reflections and distribution of the other colors as the sun sets. I put a light in the back stage left top corner of the stage with the gel R49 at 75% (red-pink), a light in the front bottom stage left corner of the stage with the gel R358 (purple) at full, and a light in the back bottom stage right corner of the stage with the gel R80 (blue) at full. All of these I set to 90 degree angles and with a soft focus so that they had a softness to them similar to how the colors of the sunset melt and blend together in the sky.

Spring Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

My goal for this lighting was to create that idea of mist and dew one finds on a spring morning. I felt the lighting for a gothic cathedral would be more dark and shadowing, so I focused on using less color as well. I started by putting some cool tone lighting in. I placed on the stage right back top corner a light at 90 degrees at 75 percent, a light at the middle back at 90 degrees at 50 percent, and another light on the stage right bottom middle at a 90 degree angle at 50 percent. All of these used the gel L201 and used a soft focus. I then placed at the front stage right bottom a light with the gel R60 at 75 percent. Then, in order to get more of a misty and grassy feeling, I added a little green. Using the gel L116, I put one light in the back stage right bottom corner at a 26 degree angle with a soft focus at 75 percent and another light in the middle top stage left at 36 degrees with a sharp focus at full.

Noon on a hot Summer Day in the Caribbean:

To me, the Caribbean feels very colorful and bright, so that was my main focus for this lighting. I started with a yellow light on the floor to represent the sand. Using the gel R15 at full at 90 degree angles, I placed one light in the middle front, one light at quarter left middle, and one light at the stage right side top middle. Then, to represent the leaves, I added green. Using the gel L80 at full with the breakup gobo, I placed both lights in the stage right back top corner, one at 90 degrees and one at 36 degrees. Then, I wanted to emphasize the blue of the ocean in the Caribbean, so I added four lights using the R80 gel at full. Two I placed at the top stage left front corner, one I placed at the top stage left middle, and the last one I placed at the back stage left top corner. All of these I did at different degrees, all with a sharp focus, so that they had a shape on the stage while also radiating blue all over the stage right side of the stage. Lastly, for one last pop of color, I added in the top middle a light using the R80 gel at full at a 50 degree angle to light the exact middle of the stage. I focused my light to be more centered because the light from the sun would be directly from the top at noon.

Winter Afternoon in Canada:

For me, a Canadian winter meant snow and green forests, so that is what I wanted to create with this lighting. I placed four lights at full using the L89 gel with the breakup gobo at 90 degrees to represent the trees and foliage. These I placed at the bottom stage right front corner of the stage, at the front middle, middle, and back middle of the stage. Then, I wanted to add some cool white light for the snow and the afternoon sunlight reflecting off of it, so I added two lights using the L201 gel at full also at 90 degrees. These I placed at the front and back corners of the stage right side. I put these specifically at the one side because the sunlight would be coming from one side at this point in the day. Lastly, to create more of a snowy aesthetic, I added one minty color using the gel L116 at full at 90 degrees placed in the bottom middle of the stage right side.
