Four Seasons

1) A Fall sunset in New England

  • Top of cyc (Full, Light Red Gel – R26), Bottom of Cyc (Full, Golden Amber – R21), 3 downstage top lights (All deepstraw – R15; Left top at 75% and middle and right at 50%), Two low downstage sides (Both Golden Amber – R21 at 50%)
  • The lighting reminds me of a fall sunset in New England because I think of the trees that are deep reds, oranges, and yellows which blend nicely with sunsets in the fall

2) Spring sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

  • Turned the ambient light too low because I thought if we are in a Gothic Cathedral not all of the light is going to enter the building. It reminds me of a cool morning with a clean blue sky and warm sun.
  • 2 low downstage sides (Left Full CT Blue – L201 at full & Right deepstraw at full), 3 downstage top lights (Left and Middle Parry Sky Blue – R68 at full & Right deepstraw – R15 at +5%), and bottom cyc ( Golden Amber – R21 at Full)

3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

  • Top of cyc (Full, Primary Blue – R80), Bottom of Cyc (+5%, Parry Sky Blue – R68), 3 downstage top lights (Left + Right Full CT Blue – L201 at full & Middle Deepstraw – R15 with the breakup gobo at full), Two low downstage sides (Both No Color Blue – R60 at Full with the breakup gobo)
  • I imagined a blue sky by the beach, the gobo acting as the sand at the beach

4) Winter afternoon in Canada

  • Two low downstage sides (Both Special Lavender – R54 at Full with the breakup gobo), Two middle sidelights (Left Full CT Blue – L201 at full & Right Primary Blue – R80 at full), One downstage top light on the left (Full CT Blue – L201 at full)
  • Winter reminds me of white plus cool tones like light purple. I wanted it to look snowy and blurry out so I used the breakout gobo again.

Light Lab: Four Seasons

1) A Fall sunset in New England

For this image I wanted to capture the warm golden red feeling of the leaves on the ground with the color of the sky right before the sun officially goes down. To achieve this I used lights 1 and 2 to have no gel at full 90 degrees in the breakup gobo. Light 3 is at full R49 at 90 degrees. Light 4 is at R21 full at 70 degrees. Lastly light 5 is at L151 75% at 90 degrees to brighten up the image a bit more. The cyc is lit with the bottom at full no gel and the top at full at L151.

2) Spring sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

For this image I wanted to capture the visual of bright light streaming through a large window. In my head I had this image of orange, and red coming through the window at the beginning of sunrise through a stained glass pane. To achieve this I used light all from one side on an angle. Light 1 was in the upper downstage right corner with no gel and the window gobo at 26 degrees at 75%, Light 2 was on the middle tree at the middle spot at no gel full, Light 3 was at the same level as Light two on the most downstage right tree at R49 at Full. The last two lights are most downstage and directly above each other from the floor up at full R51. The top and bottom of the cyc are lit at full L151.This image captured a warm glow of the sunrise with the ambient light off to simulate a darker environment like at cathedral.

3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

For this image I wanted to capture the feeling of a hot day but still relaxing. I added a breakup gobo to simulate the idea that the person was under palm tree still feeling the heat but not quite to its fullest extent. The cyc was lit at the top with no color and bottom at R68 full. Light 1 was from the middle top light at 90 degrees full with a custom orange/yellow color, light two is at quarter downstage let at full R21 90 degrees. Light three is at the opposite quarter full no gel. Lastly the middle back top light is lit with the breakup at L201 70 degrees. To me this images shows the heat of being outside in the Caribbean but also the coolness that comes with the ocean breeze and costal air.

4) Winter afternoon in Canada

For this image I used all cool white and blue toned colors. Again using side light to achieve the look that the light was coming from an outdoor space. Because the sun is typically more on the side during the afternoon I chose to have all the lights stage right. Light 1 was at full R68 from the upstage right upper corner. Directly on the other side of that at the front of stage right was light 2 at L201 Full with the breakup gobo at 90 degrees. This added more texture and helped to simulate what the texture of snow might look like. Light 3 was the upstage right light closest to the floor at R80 full. The last light 4 was at full on a custom color that was a yellowish white. The cyc is fully lit with no gel. This image feels very cold and feels like there is a lot of white/blue overlap simulating how snow can sometimes reflect and go from white to a blue shine in certain lights.

The Four Seasons

1)Fall sunset in New England

I wanted to recreate the colors of autumn, while also managing to get the lighting of the sun correct and shown. Fall is supposed to give off a warm and comforting kind of vibe, which is what I wanted to convey here. I used mostly reds, and oranges with an undertone of a purple. All the lights are angled, at a soft focus because anything else seemed too harsh. The ‘sun’ is gel R013: Straw tint @ 50 percent. The red I used was gel Ro24: Scarlet @ 75 percent, I used another yellow gel R010: Medium yellow also @ 50 percent

2)Spring Sunrise in Gothic Cathedral

I wanted to mainly convey the prettiness of a gothic cathedral, how the light reflects off the stain glass windows, while also capturing the light of the sunrise. For this I mainly used pinks and purples, using the sun in the cyc lights instead of hanging them overhead as I did previously. The purples that I used were R052: Light Lavender @ full, R048: Rose Purple @ 50 percent, I even used a light yellow color which was used in the cyc lights, Roo7: Pale Yellow @ 75 percent. I used a window gobo to emulate how I wanted to create the effect of the cathedral window, R398: Neutral grey @ full.

3)Noon on a hot summer day in the Caribbean

For this I wanted to convey the blue sky that is in the Caribbean beaches on a hot, sunny summer day. That is why I used a lot of blues, overlapping each other to try and create a really rich blue. I used R363: Aquamarine @ full, R080: Primary Blue @ 85 percent, R072: Azure Blue @ 75 percent, and R095: Medium Green @ 50 percent. The ‘sun” is represented with the gel R310: Daffodil @ 80 percent. The top cyc lights are the only cyc lights are the only ones that are turned on, I used the gel R398: Neutral Grey to represent the clouds in the sky on a clear sunny day at the beach

4)Winter afternoon in Canada

For this I went much more simple. I wanted to get across the winter snow while also showing the sun that you usually see reflecting off of the snow. For this I turned on both the top and bottom cyc lights, using R013: Straw Tint @ 90 percent, to represent coming in from both sides. The cyc lights are R066: Cool Blue @ 75 percent to represent the snow that we normally associate with winter.

Lighting Observation #11

  1. April 22, 2025; 1:28am ; Outside by the fish pound
  2. The street lamps with a cat
  3. I was walking home from auditions and passed the fish pound outside of the Spiegel. While walking, I saw a black cat sitting by the fish pond, looking at the fish. The cat looked so peaceful and nicely lit by the lights outside of the building and the road lights. They were mainly bright white colored gels but there was a singular light that was a flashing orange that then took my attention. There were a lot of shadows due to the dark night time sky and all of the lights from the building.

The Four Seasons

  1. A Fall Sunset in New England
  2. What I wanted to create was a fall sunset by the water in New England. This means that I really wanted to play with soft colors to indicate the sun setting but also the fact that fall is warm and comforting. The cyc is at full with L192 gels. The “sun” is gel R015 with a 19 degree and soft focus. Then the 2 other instruments to help create the fade out of the sunset were a red tinted gel of R26, degree 36 with a soft focus and a pink colored gel of L328, degree 70 with a soft focus. That was my sunset that faded could into the night time sky. I added 3 more lights to help great the feeling of the overall mood of the set. This allowed me to still be able to fully light my actor without worrying about if it would take away from the feeling of a sunset. These lighting instruments were all at 50% brightness with a mix of 1 R21 gel filled instrument and 2 R018 filled gels. All 3 instruments have a soft focus with a 70% output.

  1. Spring Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral
  2. The mood should be a relaxed, unknown vibe. The feeling of the sun shining through a window while the rest of the Cathedral is still sleeping. I used the cyc to help create mood by using the gel R68 at 75% fullness. I then added a singular light to create the sun starting to come into the Cathedral. I used a light purple, almost white gel (R54) to create the start of the sun coming through a window. I then used two more lighting instruments, one on each side, to accomplish lighting up the whole actor and also continuing to help with the mood of the set. Both had the R78 gel in them at 75% fullness with a soft focus at 70 degrees.

  1. Noon on a Hot Summer Day in the Caribbean
  2. I created a mood of a hot, sweat mess. Something where there was no almost no life to the lights but still indicated that everything was warm and hot. I used 7 lights. The sun was in the top SL corner with a yellow gel of R313, soft focus, and a full brightness with 36 degrees. To create the rest of the feeling, I used all warm colored gels (red and orange). My cyc was a bright orange of R21 at full. Lights 1 and 2 were filled with a red gel of R25, full brightness, soft focus, and 70 degree. This helped bring out a lot more red of what I think the Caribbean is. Lights 3 and 4 were filled with a reddish orange gel of R40, full brightness, soft focus, and 70 degree. My last two lights were an orange gel of R21, full brightness, soft focus, and 70 degree angle.

  1. Winter afternoon in Canada
  2. When I think of Canada, I think of a nice, snowy day that’s filled with different types of white and blue lights. I used 8 lights to create an overall icy white tone. My cyc was a strong blue of R67 at 75% brightness. Lights 1 and 2 were filled with an almost icy blue gel of R70, 85% brightness, soft focus, and 70 degree. This helped fill the majority of the stage. Then to give it more dimension and vibes, I added 3 more lights to each side. Lights 3 and 4 were filled with a darker blue gel of R68, 85% brightness, soft focus, and 70 degree. Lights 5 and 7 were filled with a medium blue gel of R361, 85% brightness, soft focus, and 70 degree. Finally, my last two lights (6 and 8) were a lighter blue of R64, 85% brightness, soft focus, and 70 degree angle.

Four seasons

Fall sunset: 10 degree light, R021, R357, R037, most sunsets I have seen have been an orangy pink (when I was in Mass)

Spring sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral: 50 degree light, R021,  R015, gobo-breakup, tried to get that moment between night and sunrise

Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean: gobo- soft focus and breakup, 70-90 degrees, tried to kind of texture it kind of like sand… didn’t work as intended but I like it

Winter afternoon in Canada: R065 x3, L201 x3, 90 degree, very solid, soft focus

Four Seasons Light Lab

  1. A Fall sunset in New England — I aimed to capture the richness of an autumn New England sunset by displaying an array of yellows to reds while highlighting the fact that it’s still New England, hence the grayer, blue-toned cyc lights. It’s as if the people on stage are experiencing the vibrancy of a setting sun while retaining the more depressing/grim usual weather of this location.
  • Light 1: front light, R027 medium red
  • Light 2: front light, R040 light salmon
  • Light 3: front light, R010 medium yellow
  • Light 4: front light, R333 blush pink
  • Top and bottom cyc lights, R367 slate blue
  1. Spring sunrise in a gothic cathedral — Ideally I would have cathedral window gobos framing the deep straw spotlights on either side of the people. Otherwise I wanted to reflect the sometimes beautiful/sometimes gloomy feel of a gothic cathedral through pale lavender/lilac, whose color isn’t quite as cheery as it could be in other contexts.
  • Light 1: side light, lavender
  • Light 2: side light, lavender
  • Light 3: side light, R015 deep straw
  • Light 4: side light, R015 deep straw
  • Light 5: side light, R015 deep straw
  • Light 6: side light, R015 deep straw
  • Light 7: front light, R053 pale lavender
  • Light 8: front light, R055 lilac
  • Top and bottom cyc lights, lavender
  1. Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean — This is a more stylized lighting attempt, which was meant to convey the beauty of the Caribbean through color. I chose bold variations of purple, pink and yellow to represent the heat of summer, offset by blue cyc lights that may allude to the ocean.
  • Light 1: side light, dark purple
  • Light 2: side light, dark purple
  • Light 3: side light, rich pink
  • Light 4: side light, rich park
  • Light 5: front light, R362 Tipton blue
  • Light 6: side light, R034 floral pink
  • Light 7: side light, R034 floral pink
  • Top and bottom cyc lights, bottom: Perry sky blue. Top: deep straw
  1. Winter afternoon in Canada — Canada during the winter is best represented by various  washed out blues and creams, as if to stir the idea of ice and snow. Although winter so far north of the equator usually yields intense darkness, I kept the afternoon in mind by making sure the gels were ice reflecting in the day’s sunlight.
  • Light 1: side light, R365 Tharon delft blue
  • Light 2: side light, R365 Tharon delft blue
  • Light 3: side light, pale blue
  • Light 4: side light, pale blue
  • Light 5: front light, R067 light sky blue
  • Light 6: front light, R067 light sky blue
  • Light 7: front light, R067 light sky blue
  • Light 8: front light, R067 light sky blue
  • Light 9: front light, R067 light sky blue
  • Top and bottom cyc lights, full CT blue

Four Seasons

Sunset: Gels used: No color, Gold tint (L151), and Deep Straw (R15)

Top and bottom cyc, 3 lights one straight down and one from each downstage corner

Bright sun rays, I wanted to reflect a warm evening with visible rays of light shining down, possibly even being reflected and therefor skewed, to give the appearance its coming from more than one direction.

Sunrise Cathedral:

Bottom cyc at 75 %  3 lights, one straight down to create a wash, and shin kickers on either side to get the lighting on the floor. All lights Full CT Blue (L2o10)

Like the sun is shining from the horizon, I wanted to reflect the cool, early bright light bleeding in to the building, mostly likely illuminating the lower parts of the room.

Caribbean Noon

The top and Bottom cyc at full, one at gold tint and one at real straw

3 Lights in the front uring real staw to replicate the hot sun beating down, where the UV is high, and the temperatures get so hot that you can see the heat in the air.

Canadian Winter Noon

All lights FULL CT blue. Top and Bottom cyc full, 6 lights coming from upstage corners, upstage on each side, and a light coming from downstage stage right and upstage stage left. The two lights have a dot gobo on them.

In the winder, any sunlight that gets through the clouds bounces around all of the white snow everywhere, everything all one color. The gobo replicates the light making shadows through the tree branches.

Four Seasons Light Lab

Gothic Cathedral Sunrise

I think I used six lights to create this. I wanted to add a gobo, but I forgot how to add them. I added the pink and lavender lights so that it looked like the sunlight was coming through colored stained glass. I really wanted to play into the stained glass look, so instead of using a more sunlight-esque gel, I believe I used something close to R15 Deep Straw. I put all lights on the right, since the sun rises in the East.

Hot Summer Noon, Caribbean

I used all 10 lights here, although they are not all visible. I used a bunch of different shades of yellow for this, to recreate the look of the sun bouncing off of the sand at the beach. I put the brightest of the lights overhead. since the sun is at it’s highest at noon.

Fall Sunset, New England

I used all 10 lights for this. I used a few pictures I found on google as reference. There were a lot of oranges, pinks and purplish blues, so I used pink, a mix of blue and purple lights, and orange lights. I found all of the colors using the color wheel thing, so I do not have specific gel colors. Again i put all lights on the left side, since the sun sets in the west, except for the one that I placed overhead so that the person could be lit properly.

Winter Afternoon, Canada

I used all 10 lights for this. I wanted it look like it was snowy and cold, since it is winter and in Canada, so it is most definitely snowy. 4 lights are colored with R361, another 4 are R365, and the other 2 are R310. I put the lights with the R310 gels to the right of the person so it looks like it is afternoon, since the sun sets in the West.

Lighting Observation #10

1. April 23rd, 2:07 PM. In Emily Lowe 110

2. The fluorescent ceiling light glows pink

3. This room always feels too bright with the combination of every single fluorescent light being turned on at once. One in the middle, however, stands out among the rest. It is glowing a faint pink color, one streak of pale red among the blinding yellow and white beside it. It’s a refreshing break from the monotonous glow of the others surrounding it and it breaks up the color in the room.
