Lighting Obseravtion #3

2/14/19 in my dorm room at 2 am at my desk in total darkness except for my computer screen.

Objective Description: The light illuminating from my computer was projecting a giant light blue rectangle on the wall behind me.

Subjective description: Being in the darkness except for the light made me feel safe and enclosed in the light protecting me from the darkness of my own room.

Lighting Observation #3

2/14/19 in Hammer Lab at around 5pm inside of the phone charging station

Objective Description: The lights within the phone charging station in hammer lab has a single blue or yellow light within each charging box.

Subjective Description: The lights inside of the box create a technological feel to it similar to that in “Be More Chill.” I felt that lighting was perfect for the object. Most of the time when you think of technology, you think about blue lights.

Photo Observation #3

A screenshot from Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 3 Episode 2: The Slippery Slope Part 2

Theme: Cold

Description: Although the background of this image is the coldness on the top of the mountain, the grey that is used adds to the idea of cold. Normally during the winter, the sky has a grey coloring to it. The scene from this Netlix Original TV show takes the same ideas from the real world and puts them to your phone or computer screen. This fits the theme because of the grey and blue lighting found in the scene.

Cold

Attribute: I took this picture during the snow day.

Theme: Cold

Description: All I told my suitemate was that I needed a picture with fun lighting for a blog post, not the theme. Then, I asked my suitemate to put on her LED lights and I decided on a really deep blue as the only lighting in the room from the options she can adjust with an app on her phone. I told her to “look at the door and think of NAME” (her ex), and I immediately took the picture before she broke the face and giggled. That is a real reaction and I think it’s quite cold.

Light Observation #2; Black Veil Parlor

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Saturday 2/9, 8:00 pm, Black Veil Gallery and Tattoo Parlor, Salem MA

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The lights where hung in the rafters of the gallery, red, green, and amber gels distributed between them. None of the lights where very intense and they promoted an overall atmosphere that complimented the Gothic/Victorian themed decor of the gallery. There where pools of red on some of the displays but generally the green and amber lights where less noticeable, there where also real candles along one wall of the shop that flickered through red glass. Even with the number of lights present it was still overall fairly dim.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This place seemed like the true heart of Salem, a place where the spirits of the lost and wicked could sit agreeably with the living. This is the sort or place that could be haunted and you would never know if it was haunted or just part of the decor.

Photo Observation #2 Shadows

My Photo of Drama 78 Sculpture

3) Theme; Shadows

4) Photo of “Air” Sculpture on a seamless black background, I intentionally used lighting to blend the shadows with the black paint on the bottom of each section of the sculpture to create a floating effect in the final photograph.

Light Observation 2

Date/Time/Location: 2/3/19 – 5:45 pm – dorm building lounge.

Objective: The sun had mostly set and a majority of the people who live in our dorm were in the living room about to start top watch the Super Bowl. We turned the lights off in the lounge but the light that was shining through the window gave everyone a cast shadow over their face.

Subjective: It felt like I was in the Twilight Zone, because everyones face had a half shadow across the right side of their face while the other side was completely lit up. It was a weird feeling to see everyone face the way it was, it was kind of creepy and it made me not even wanting to make eye contact. The shadow reflecting made everyone look like Two Face from the Batman series.

Photo Observation 2

I took this photo with my iPhone 7 in the Gunntown Cemetery in Naugatuck Connecticut on June 12th 2018.

Theme: Shadows

Description: Taken during a sight-seeing trip targeted at some of the most haunted places in Connecticut, this photo stands as a personal reminder of just how much light can shape and alter how we see things in the world. One of the biggest phobias that comes under fire in horror stories is that of darkness. Light and darkness go together and you have to know one to understand the other. These shadows here serve as windows into the darkness that exists even when the sun is shining full force. Just as the sun’s presence above is certainly obvious, so is that of the darkness as the shadows have a way of creeping out through the trees and around the tombstones to essentially say “Not only are we still here, we are everywhere, the darkness never dies, where there is light there is darkness too”. As the sun travels across the sky, the shadows make their way across the ground, and once the sun sets these shadows are no longer tethered to the earth and they are given free run of the world. The way in which the light shines from behind serves to keep the tombstones as well as the background greenery in shadow. This creates a certain uneasiness along with the sense of wonder that may be all too familiar to fans of horror stories. It isn’t necessarily the fear of the dark that chokes people, but rather a fear of what may live in the darkness. We feel unease at the thought of these matters, but we can’t help but dive in headfirst to see beyond the veil.

Light Observation 2

Date-Time-Location: 2/6/19, 7:00 P.M., Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church

Objective: The sun had set not too long ago, and the entire church was dark. The only obvious sources of light in the room were the four candles that were lit near the altar.

Subjective: During the day, this church aims to make use of the natural light shining through the stained glass windows lining the walls. When darkness falls during the night, these four candles remain lit for a short time to provide a small but powerful source of illumination for the church. The embers from the candles appear to expand far beyond the alter and cast shadows on the surrounding walls and on the pews. These candle lights are small and yet they succeed in filling the room with their enveloping warmth. These four lights seems to offer hope, a sense of longing for the day to return along with a certain assuredness that this longing will soon be satisfied. For now this light burns low, but soon the sun will return to the sky making way for the morning once again. It is darkest before the dawn indeed.
