Photo Observation 2

From Mandy(2018) film
Photo from imdb.com
Theme:Shadow
Description: The lighting on the subjects is mostly coming from behind them. It is because of this way that the lighting was set up the viewer can get a good idea of the character’s motivations and moral code. Accentuating the red from the taillights causes an association with anger and passion while the shadows give them an ominous, threatening look. The headlights can be viewed as their fiery glances that pierce through the night fog.

2nd Light Observation

  1. 2/5/2019 around 7PM in my dining room.
  2. Objective Observation: We were celebrating my housemate’s birthday in our dining room. We turned off the light in the room and lit those birthday candles on the cake. All of sudden, my housemate’s face was partially lightened up by those flames which were flickering all the time.
  3. Subjective Observation: Since the birthday cake was right in front of my housemate, he was the only one in the room whose face was lit up and everyone else was in the dark. Candles’ flames were flickering rhythmically so light and shadow were like combating each other back and forth in his face. Until he blew out all the candles on the cake, he was in complete darkness as well, and eventually shadow (or darkness) won the battle.

Photo Observation #2

1: Source: A photo that was taken of me this summer July 16, 2018 at Madison Square Garden

2: Theme: Shadows

3: Description: The shadows play a huge part in why this photo fits this theme so perfectly. This was taken while attending a Foo Fighters concert over the summer. Luckily it was at the greatest arena in the country and the shadow blocks me from the photo allowing the audience who is viewing the photo to observe the amazing view of the arena behind me. The shadow of the balcony over me casts and overcast over my body allowing the view in the back to be visible and the main viewpoint of the photo.

Photo Observation #2

Taken by Me in 2015 in a hallway in my high school
  1. Theme: Shadows
  2. Description: Although this image is in black and white, I felt it showed the shadows even more than an image in color. I find that there are more shadows on my friend’s face and hair so then it shows dimension. Without the shadows, this image would look flat and almost like a line drawing. Shadows don’t have to be on a wall or on the ground, they are on our faces and our hair to give us dimension.

Lighting Observation #2

  1. 2/4/19 at around 8:45 am in the student center in front of freshens
  2. Objective Description: My friend was sitting next to me while the sun was rising through one of the upper-level windows and created a bokeh in the lower right-hand corner of the image I had taken. The light was an almost perfect circle in the upper left-hand corner of the image and created a heavenly glow around her head.
  3. Subjective Description: The moment had reminded me about the light and the darkness in the world. Both are depicted in this image by the sun and the shadow. By having a small bokeh in the corner of the darker side of the image, it also showed how whenever you think it is dark, there is always some kind of light.

Light Observation 1

  1. Wednesday, January 30, 2019 – 5:08pm; my dorm room
  2. Shortly after the white out that had passed over us, I looked outside of my dorm window. The sun was partially set, with the sky a golden hue that stretched over the expanse of New York City in the distance. The last few rays of sunshine it would have for the day could still be seen scattered over the expanse of cars and snow that was on the ground. Street lights could be seen illuminated here and there, creating their own glow on the snow.
  3. I’ve lived in the same room since I started college. Even though the view is always the same, being able to see how different the sun’s light can be from day to day never ceases to put me in awe. Looking at the light, I felt as though I was wrapped in a hug by an old friend; despite it being something I see everyday, it still manages to feel different every time I see it, and it always makes me feel warm and comforted inside.

Photo Observation 1

July 2016, A lake a few towns over from my house, taken by myself
Theme: Sunrise/Sunset
The fading sun behind the trees draws your attention straight towards it, as the contrast between the two is the most prominent within the picture as a whole. The light itself seems almost like a vortex, as it seems as though the clouds are gravitating towards the light, like they are drawn into it.

Light Observation 1

Date/Time/Location- 1.30.19/7:30 A.M./My bedroom

Objective- My entire bedroom was dark. Not a single source of light was visible except for a few thin rays of sunlight that extended through small openings in the curtains covering my window.

Subjective- The pitch black aura surrounding me seemed to keep the tired feeling of the night in the forefront of my mind until the rays of light appeared through the window. These rays energized me and filled me with hope and excitement for what this new day had to offer. The way that only a few thin rays were able to reveal themselves through the curtains led me to believe that while it would be nice to remain sedentary within this night time world, there was a brand new day unfolding before me that absolutely could not be taken for granted. There was an unknowing of what to expect and it brought to mind the idea of unwrapping a present as the full extent of the gift will never be revealed if one does not take the initiative to peel back the wrapping paper. These beams of light were a mere preview to what the bright new day had to offer.

Photo Observation 1

Source- I took this photo on my iPhone 5 in August of 2014 while riding the Staten Island ferry.

Theme- Sunset/Sunrise

Description-While the sun is not directly pictured here, its presence remains constant and undeniable. As the sun begins to set, the warm hues it emits highlight the scattered clouds in the distance surrounding the Statue of Liberty. The Statue itself is kept in shadow and the surrounding greenery as well as some of the more distant landmarks become enveloped in darkness as the sun continues to proceed towards its rest. As the sun vanishes from the world, the energy of the day gradually drains away with it. The warm sky contrasting with the dimly lit landmarks brings forth a sense of peace and tranquility as it provides a much welcomed signal of the end of a long day.

Light Observation 1

1: January 30, 2019 at around 11:40am in my car

2: Objective description: In my car, I was just sitting and listing to music when I turned my head and was blinded by the light. I pulled my mirror down to look at the light reflecting off of my hair and I just noticed my eyes. At first I noticed the bags under my eyes from the lack of sleep, and then realized they looked like glass.

3: Subjective description: As I was paying attention to the light reflecting off of my person. It made me take the time to observe myself and the tiny details that I don’t pay attention to on a daily basis. It gave me a warm feeling of confidence and appreciation. Reminding myself that everything happens for a reason and I should be grateful to be where I am. It was a very comforting and humbling moment that allowed me to take a deep breath and enjoy the moment.
