Photo Observation
- Title: “Sunset in the Bronx”
- Discovered through Imgur, uploaded by “symbiiotic” on January 3, 2017. Time unknown.
- Theme: Sunrise/Sunset
- This photo is a blend of colors towards the end of a sunset, an evening sky covered with dark blues, purples, and the tail end of light pinks and bright yellow colors. The photo was taken from a train platform high above the ground. I chose this photo because it feels close to the end of a night where things are winding down from the day and it made me feel at ease. I like the perspective from the platform, which is outside, above ground, and in between lamp posts. Even those lights hitting the concrete create this nighttime feeling, contrasting the vibrancy of the sunset occurring quite nicely. I also enjoy the smallest detail, the green signal light in the far left, which is distant but still illuminating.
Light Observation 11
Date.Time.Location- 4/26/19. 6:12 AM. Upper East Side Manhattan
Objective Description- Yesterday I was hired to act in a short psychological horror film. Filming took place in the Upper East Side in Manhattan in the form of an overnight shoot outdoors. As we neared the end of filming, the sun began to rise, lighting up the sky.
Subjective Description- It is an absolutely joy to be able to work on a film in any capacity. No matter how many times I’ve done it however, I never seem to get used to the long hours. I spent most of the night and early morning outside and the night sky blanketing the city made me feel the weight of my eye lids as I struggled to stay awake in between takes. The darkness served to create the illusion of endless night, of perpetual waking dream in which it seemed as if the light would never come. This was until slight glimmers of light began to show themselves as the blackened sky began to roll over into gray as the raindrops continued to fall. The light was returning, the sun although hidden, had ascended to its peak once again. Although the sun didn’t appear immediately within my sight as it was concealed behind the clouds, the death of the darkness replaced the gloomy feeling in my chest with that of hope, of determination, and it even brought a smile to my face. We all knew how long we had been out her filming and the light not only signaled the end of a long night of filming, but it also filled us all with gratification as we heard the director yell “that’s a wrap!”. The shadows of the night had faded and now we knew it was time to truly celebrate a job well done. The night had come to an end and the escalating brightness filling the sky meant that a new day was just beginning with new chances and opportunities beckoning.
Lighting Observation #6
1)DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/14 7:30 AM, Dorm Room
2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The window in my room faces east so when the sun starts to rise the light fades in slowly until it washes over the whole sky and it finally looks like daylight.
3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I didn’t sleep at all that night, I watched the sun set, and now I was watching it rise. It was a reminder of how exhausted I was, the world had taken a break and I was still going. At least it was a gentle light, slowly warming the earth until it awoke.

3. Theme: Happy
4. The way the warmness of this light shines on and through what it hits is what makes it happy. The warm light that saturated the pure white snow just makes me calm and happy. Also just the photo in genuinely gorgeous with how it adds a shadowed effect in the front rather than the usual shadows on the back. In a way it was what the lighting did not light, is the reason I picked this.

Title: “Venetian Sunrise”
Location: Venice, Italy January 12, 2018
Theme: Sunrise
The view of a sunrise as the photographer is riding away from the angelic colors on a boat through the canals of Venice. The sunrise begins as a light orange and becomes a deep pink fading into a soft purple. The sky is reflected onto the water of the canal leaving a dark shading onto the houses on both sides of the water. This picture leaves me with a sense of relaxation. Looking at the beauty of Venice before the actual city, itself, is even lit up, preludes to just how magical this place really is. Although boats are already passing each other by, the water only seems slightly disturbed leaving just enough rippling to look as if a rock glided across its surface.
Virtual Light Lab Project
I chose my inspiration picture as it has an interesting contrast of the orange and the purple. It has the feeling of Fall in that it has romantic warm colors, and the way the woman is lit is similar to the background but with less harsh warms and a light cool to make her look more real. The lighting has a richer version of purple than the inspiration as it better exemplifies the rich feeling of Fall.

Springtime is a very romantic time of year, so the colors I found in this image of a Spring sunrise on Long Island fit that idea perfectly. The subtle pink melding in the bluish sky gives off an impression of warmth that isn’t overpowering. The sweetness of the lighting evokes the romantic time of springtime along with the bright energy of the emerging morning.

A hot summer day in New England means there are no clouds in the sky and everything is too bright. The harshness of the day is reflected in the far too bright sky, and the lighting itself makes you want to be wearing sunglasses.

An afternoon in the Winter of Alaska consists of a dark blue sky with an orange tint of the sun reflecting off the land. It’s almost a sunset but the sun doesn’t alter the sky yet and simply adds a glow to the land.

Virtual Light Lab: Four Seasons
1.) A Fall Sunset in Hawaii
I used the picture above as inspiration. I loved the wide range of colors in Hawaiian sunsets. In the light lab I wanted to bring out the purples and orange colors seen in the sunset.

I loved the contrast between the calm blue sky and the yellow/orange that is starting to peak through. I put orange light at the bottom to mimic the sun rising into the blue sky.

4.)Winter afternoon in Alaska
I decided to use a more icy blue for this image, found just above the trees in the photo I used for inspiration. The blue fades up into white to mimic light shining off of the top of the snow covered mountain.

Lighting Observation
- 3/16/17, 7:24 AM, boyfriend’s bedroom
- The blinds were shut on the window directly in front of his bed, facing the street. The sunrise still came through. It made the window and the walls glow light yellow.
- I woke up two hours before I wanted to and the room was growing brighter as the minutes passed. I looked across the room to one of the three windows. The one behind me and the one to my left did not have much light shining through, but the window directly across was glowing yellow. The walls surrounding it appeared to be shining, and the horizontal blinds made stripes. The sun was rising in the east and flooding the room. I was a little angry at myself for waking up so early, but seeing this light made up for it. It felt very peaceful and calming and I was able to fall back asleep.

2) Sunrise Technologies powered by Microsoft
3) Sunrise/sunset
4) The sunrise appears so powerful that it blocks the ocean and most of the background of the photo. It feels warm and simple yet beautiful. it creates feelings hope for the future. The beach and grass is dark enough to still remain visible despite the overwhelming light behind it.
