Autumn Sunset in Vermont-

LIGHTS USED:

PAR 64 WFL @ 15% intensity, color “Gallo Gold”

cyc @ 10% intensity, color “Medium Red”

cyc @ 10% intensity, color “Deep Straw”

36 Source Four @ 20% intensity, color “Apollo Orange”

Whenever I think of sunsets, I think of dimmer lighting filled with warm tones. I wanted it to be soft, with lots of oranges and a nice blend of red and yellows.

A Spring Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral-

LIGHTS USED:

36 Source Four @ 40% intensity, Church Window template GOBO, color “Light Lavender”

36 Source Four @ 30% intensity, color “Spanked Pink”

cyc @ 5% intensity, color Medium Red

cyc @ 5% intensity, color Primary Blue

The stained glass of the cathedral was something I wanted to play with. The sole light source is the rising sun (coming from the east) filtered through these windows, casting the scene in shades of pink and purple.

Noon on a Beach in Hawaii

LIGHTS USED:

cyc @ 20% intensity, color “tahitian blue”

36 Source Four @ 50% intensity, “Water Shining” Gobo, color “Island Blue”

6″ Fres @ 50% intensity

PAR 64 WFL @ 45% intensity, color “Pale Bastard Amber”

I wanted the feeling of the hot, tropical summer sun to feel almost oppressive in its lighting. It is all meant to be very bright. It’s peak daytime where the sun might begin to feel overwhelming.

Winter in North Dakota

cyc @ 15% in “Primary Blue”

6″ Fres @ 50%

PAR 64 MFL @ 20% in “Sky Blue Silk”

36 Source Four @ 10%, “Moving Clouds” GOBO

PAR 64 WFL @ 35%

I wanted to show a place covered in bright snow, hence a lot of the bright lights with no direct colors except blue. It’s freezing cold, and the sun reflecting brightly off the snow is nearly blinding.

Lighting Observation

DATE/TIME/LOCATION: April 2nd, 7:30 AM, my bedroom

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A bright, morning sunbeam shining into a dark room, casting the whole thing in shades of blue

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: the bright sunlight woke me up in the morning and, while very bright sunbeams three hours before your alarm aren’t the most pleasant things to wake up to, the light was… refreshing. Being cooped up for so long has made me miss the sun. It made me want to spend hours basking in the light that filled my tiny bedroom. Perhaps it made me feel hopeful.

Photo Observation #7

I took this photo in the early afternoon on April 17 last year on South Campus, right outside of Axinn Library.

3) THEME: Spring

4) DESCRIPTION: I have a habit of taking pictures of things that spark momentary joy. This means that at the height of Spring on campus, I often stop to take pictures of the way the bright sunlight shines on the flowers. The clearness of the April sky makes all of the colors breathe so much more vividly. The brilliant blue of the sky and the bright, lively colors of all of the blooming flowers feels like a dose of serotonin sometimes, even though the joy only lasts a bit. The pinks of the cherry blossoms outside Axinn made me very happy that day, and I remember standing under that tree in delight, looking at how the sun sparkled on all of the petals and the shadows they casted on us under the tree. I miss it, to be honest.

Lighting Observation

1) March 27th, 4:30 AM, my living room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Walking from my bedroom to the kitchen for a class of water, all of the lights were out, save for the dim glow of the golden butterfly wall plug-ins in the living room and kitchen.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The still quiet of a late night in a house in the woods always has a mysterious horror movie vibe to it (we often joke about our house being haunted because of how odd the nights can feel). The dim glowing butterflies provided just enough light for me to see where I was going, as everything was just slightly illuminated in a dull golden tone. But I could not see enough to avoid the obstacles of the cat toys blocking my path. Mostly everything was silhouetted, rather than seeing the clear shape, making me feel on edge as I tried to maneuver my way through.

I took this photo at a concert at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in October.

THEME: Nightlife

DESCRIPTION: the image is of Karl Kuehn, a member of the band Museum Mouth, playing guitar on stage. Yellow, pink, and red lights are lighting him from behind.

Lighting Observation #5

1. DATE/TIME/LOCATION

02/28/20, outside the 13th floor of Enterprise, 6:00 AM

2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION:

The sunrise was a brilliant blue, with yellow at the bottom of the horizon. The two blended into a very pretty green color, yet the clouds in the sky appeared almost lavender.

3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION

The sunrise took me by surprise. I was with a few friends and the colors fading into the sky before reaching such beautiful, brilliant hues was mesmerizing to watch.

Photo Observation #4

This picture was taken by me in my dorm room.

THEME: Single Artificial Light Source

DESCRIPTION: A transparent pink vinyl record, backlit by a bright pink neon sign that reads “girls girls girls”. The entire image glows in different shades of pink.

Lighting Observation #4

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Feb 20, 2020. 5:45 PM. Outside Lowe.

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A mixture of a soft, cool blue dusk with orange-yellow artificial light.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I had stepped out of the costume shop, distracted by my phone. Typically leaving the shop at this time or later, I had expected it to be the much darker night it had been a few weeks ago. Instead, the cool blues mixing with the warmth of the lights outside Lowe caught me off guard. The sun had only just finished setting, and the sky was still painted with the last remnants of daylight. It was pretty enough to take my eyes away from whatever message I was sending to really appreciate the moment. The sun was setting later, the days will continue to lengthen, and, soon enough, the spring will arrive.

Lighting Observation #3

1) Thursday, February 14th, around 9:30 PM, South Campus

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: An orangey streetlight shining against a mostly-bare tree, which cast a long shadow on a wet sidewalk

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: After a long day of classes, I was walking home when this streetlight caught my eye. What I found particularly astounding, personally, was the orange quality of this one when most of the others before had been an almost fluorescent white. The way the lights elongated the shadows of the gangly branches, with only a few desperate leaves still clinging to it, was eerily beautiful. The scene itself was, admittedly, a very stunning one, yet the image it created was one that might fill someone with dread on a nightly walk home.

Photo Observation #3

This image was taken by my friend Chloe on Christmas at her grandmother’s house in Vancouver.

THEME: Romance

DESCRIPTION: Now, the image of a chicken defrosting by a fireplace might not scream romance to you, but the lighting manages to create a tender scene. The light from the fire casts a nice glow and warm shadows onto the chicken itself as it sits on the black, marble fireplace. Should the subject be a human body rather than a frozen chicken, the scene would be portrayed as tender and intimate, largely due to the way the moment itself is lit.
