Lighting Observation #8

1) April 4, 2025, 3:47 PM, WRHU Studio North

2) The lights inside of the studio.

3) The studio always feels extremely cozy, since the studio lacks the harsh what florescent lights that are in the office and in the other classrooms around the school of communications. The lights on the ceiling are on a strip, all wired together, but are adjustable, so each light is pointed in random directions throughout the room. there are a few lights wired in the ceiling itself, but they are much dimmer then the others. All of the lights are a soft yellow light making the studio feel comfortable. the room itself feels almost like a weighted blanket, making you want to fall asleep, which I believe is attributed to the lighting and the soundproofing panels.

Lighting Observation #8

  1. 4/2/2025, 11:45 am, classroom
  2. One of my classmates sit in front of me. A soft light from the window across cast their shadow on the wall next to us.
  3. The shadow on the wall dances next to me. It copies every movement of my classmate, following their arms, the tilt of their head, their posture. It slightly distorts them, a blurry reflection of them. Yet, it finds its own life, moving around on the wall, at times disappearing, only to find its way to a new wall or a new image. It circles its way back to me, almost dancing around me. It is just a reflection of my classmate. But it moves as if on its own, in a duet with me, circling around my chair, engaging me.

Lighting Observation #7

  1. 3/25/2025, 5:03 pm, Lowe 108
  2. Objective: The setting sun shines through the window of the studio, casting a yellow-orange box onto the marley.
  3. Subjective: The marley expands across the floor, creating a sea of gray. The sunset disrupts it. Through a window in the back, it shines into the studio, giving a warm, yellow tone to the room. It creates a box of light cast on the floor, a perfect rectangle. As dancers move across it, disrupting the beams of light, shadows dance around and in the box. From the front, the light shines around the bodies, casting a halo of light, blurring their features. The sunlight bounces off the window, causing everyone in its range to squint and cover their face. Yet there is a beauty to the discomfort. The image of those moving around and within the light as it distort the movement within the class and add a new found depth.

Coke ad from google images accessed 4/3/25

Advertisement/Desire

This ad is very raw and real, using the bare minimum to showcase want and desire. The ad is emphasizing that coca-cola is the only option for a soda of this caliber. The simple white light showcases how delicious and refreshing a coke is, highlighting the condensation on the glass and the carbonation of the beverage.

Watch ad found on Google

This is a Jaquet Droz watch. The tag “Some watches tell time, some tell a story” clearly wants the consumer to think that if they buy this watch it somehow means more than other watches on the market. The background of the image is a dark blue, which makes the brass embellishments on the watch pop, drawing your eyes to the center. The rest of the watch is a deeper blue, so there’s unity throughout the advertisement, but nothing blends together. The light is coming from a single source, casting light on the watch and making everything else dark. The darkness is also where they placed the tag, further emphasizing the message that this watch is better than any other watch out there

This advertisement uses three point lighting to help make the food on screen an appetizing appearance. The use of neutral white tones help show off the meal without distracting the audience with color, leaving the food to speak for itself. The use of a high angled backlight helps separate the food from the background, making the food’s presence more prominent and stand out to the audience. The more evenly lit nature of the lighting design helps hide the food’s imperfection, making the audience want the food more.

Advertisment for Heinz Ketchup (707*1000) : r/AdPorn

Photo from Internet accessed 4/2/2025

This is obviously a Heinz Tomato Ketchup ad and I think the design and the lighting makes it very effective. As they use slices of tomato to mimic the shape of a bottle of ketchup, the pure side lighting accentuates the different slices and brings attention to the bottle itself. The background itself is a red color that matches with the color you would expect out of a bottle of ketchup. The bright white side lighting makes the tomatoes stand out and the shadow cast by the tomatoes accents the white writing on the advertisement.

Lighting Observation #8

  1. April 1st, 2025 sometimes after 10pm in my room
  2. My roommate had a pink glowstick on her desk and the lights in the room were off.
  3. In the field of bleak darkness, a single pink glow cuts through the black. A line no longer than six inches emits a low lights, illuminating nothing but the surface of the desk it lies directly on. Among the darkness around it, it stands out and invites eyes to peer at it.

This ad is for Newport Cigarettes. It shows a candid looking photo of two people with a green border. The woman’s shirt is green to match this border and the man’s shirt is orange which matches the text. It seems like there’s a flash coming from the upper left of the people. In the green border, three boxes of these cigarettes are lit possibly from above and slightly in front but the shadows seem off.

  1. Photo from the internet of burgers, accessed 4/2/2024
  2. Advertisement
  3. This is a fake ad for a “delicious burger brunch.” It is especially eye catching due to it’s bright color. The light is coming at two different angles from the side, assumed due to the shadows of the burger, although since this photo has been edited on too a different background, it is harder to tell where the shadows would fall. This picture is especially appetizing because as a viewer, its lighting pulls you in. Since it’s not directly from the front, this allows for a shadow to fall on one side of the burger, which makes it more three-dimensional. Additionally, the way in which the other burgers are set up in comparison also help with this, because their assumed shadows are hidden behind the bigger burger. Thus, they are very well lit and don’t have the same shadows, which juxtaposes nicely with the depth and dynamic found in the middle burger.
