Lighting Observation #2

2/15/2026 1:48am

Objective description: I bought a cheap $15 sunset lamp for my dorm. It created a cozy sunset feel in our room. Its circular, the rim of the light is yellow that blends into a pink moving inwards the circle.

subjective description: I’m hanging out with my roommates late at night, we’re chatting while doing work and having deep conversations. The lamp being the only thing illuminating the room creates a very intimate and cozy feel.

Photo Observation #2

1. June 20th 2025, 9:34pm, roof balcony in Philly

2. Night Life

3. I was visiting my grandparents at their apartment in Philadelphia and we decided to go up to the rooftop balcony of their building. I was feeling inspired so I took some pictures. I think this one perfectly portrays the theme “night life.” The darkness of the night is all around, but the city lights are shining. Even as the buildings get smaller towards the horizon, the lights do not dim. The city is alive.

Photo Observation #2

  1. October 6th 2025, 10:06 PM at Pier 57
  2. Night Life
  3. Last year I saw the spectacular Keith Michael Pinault in The Maenads with my best friend and now partner. To make a night of it, we made our way down to the piers and ended up looking out on the water. I chose this picture for night life because of how the dark water and sky are contrasted by the lights shining on them. The pink light on the left reminded me of the kind of neon lights you see in the heart of the city. What felt so important about this was the variation in the lights framed by the building and the little island. The reflection across the water felt simultaneously calming and exhilarating as I realized just how much there was to see and explore in my new home. It reminded me that I’m not trapped, just like the light as it ripples across the waves

Photo Observation #2

Screenshot

  1. December 15th, 2025 – Nutty Irishman, Farmingdale, NY
  2. Night Life
  3. This picture was taken a couple months ago at a nice bar in Farmingdale. My friends and I went to celebrate the end of the semester just a week before we left for Christmas break. This picture captures the dense air of the bar and how a packed, lively night life can be felt through a photograph. My friend Nick sits at the center of this photo as he scans the room behind him, taking in the high, youthful energy of the dimly lit room. As the room was made visible every other second through flashes of stage lights behind the earth shaking DJ, night life was viewed as if one was holding a flip book. All of this gets flashed brightly in a moment from the digital camera as it attempts to isolate this moment of college excitement. The flash however swiftly removes many of these details which filled the room only moments before leaving a brightly exposed Nick forever enshrined in college bar legend.

Photo Observation #2

  1. January 19, 2026 6:30 PM, West Palm Beach, FL
  2. Night Life
  3. Another picture from my trip to Florida, this picture is from the state faire that we went to. When I think of night life, I often think of neon lights against black/dark sky. This particular picture does a really good job of showing that contrast, as well as the movement of people living; an important part of night life to me is the life. This had been earlier in the evening but the activity showed no signs of stopping even when we left around 9pm.

Photo Observation #2

1) Hofstra University walkway- December 2025

2) Theme- Night Life

3) I had took this picture after the major snowstorm that we had before the break. As I was walking outside, the excess of snow mixed in with night light gave a winter wonderland type vibe to me. The large lamp that sat to the side allowed the roadway to light up and “open” up a pathway for me to walk through. I feel that when you think of night life, you think about the people that surround it, but it is also important to capture the empty moments. During these empty moments, you wonder what people are doing on their own time that we cannot see on camera.

Photo Observation 2 – Stanley Morgan

1) The Metropolitan Opera – October 2nd, 2025

2) Theme: Night Life

3) I took this photo during Drama 003 last semester on our trip to The Metropolitan Opera, in which was one of the first times I felt I had emerged into the world of Night Life, especially in New York City. What drew me to this photo specifically was the slightly yellow light mixing with the water to create a beautiful spectrum of value and contrast. In the background, the two buildings themselves have contrasting tones of light, with one shining warm, and one shining cool. Personally, I believe this emphasizes the fountain in the center, as both of those light bring your attention to the middle of the photo with the composition of the buildings itself.

Light Observation #3

1)  12/28/25 – Seattle Art Museum

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Sunlight pours through two frosted and patterned windows onto the wood flooring of an all wood room. The pattern on the window is consistent circles. As the light travels through the window and onto the floor it creates a unique, repeating, pattern on the floor. The only other light in the room is from the display case of plates and other decorated tableware.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The stretched circles created on the floor by the window caught my eye as it reminds me of the light created by stained glass windows, minus the color. It also reminds me of light as it passes through trees. The lighting is soft and diffused, the circles are stretched due to where the sun is shining into the room. It feels warm and homey, and also somewhat lonely.

Photo Observation #2 –

  1. 2/15/26 – Times Square NYC
  2. Theme – Night Life
  3. I took this picture in the city this past weekend. It fits “night life” because there are people out and about and it is night. To me “night life” is all about the people, or where people exist at night. To me, as long as people can exist in a space at night it could be considered as a “night life” location. NYC is very literally the city for night life, the lights, bars, and shops are all open late for tourists and the like to be in and around.

Lighting Observation #2

1)  2/9/26 – sometime at night

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Red taillight lights up a lion statue, very little surrounding light meaning the taillight casts stark shadows across the lion statue’s face.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The red lighting and shadows makes the lion look scary. The shadows and single source exaggerate the sharp cuts of the stone. It feels ominous and reminds me of that scene in Star Wars; Revenge of the Sith where Anakin is about to kill all the younglings and his lightsaber is casting similar light (though, that was blue light but still)
