Drama 16 Stage Lighting

1. February 13 2014 at around 5:30. This was in the den of my house on top of an end table.

2. This light was a little flame from a candle. It emitted a large glow around itself that shone on the wall.

3. As I walked into my dark den, a tiny spark emitted a beautiful, warm glow. The flame danced with grace as it lit the blackened room with relaxing shades of red and orange. Our wall was illuminated with bright waves of yellow as the light around the candle swayed around the room. In contrast to the dark, gloomy night, the candle created a calming and serene atmosphere. Although small, this flame evoked an enormous glow that made a huge difference.

1. 1/29/14 at around 10:45 in my den.

2. A bright blaze of reds, oranges and yellows, flickering in a darkened room. It was a warm, soothing glow.

3. As I walked into my den, I felt a sudden change of atmosphere. Suddenly the stresses of the day were gone; not only for me, but for my family as well.  As the warm, red sparks danced around, I felt my worries dance away with them. The orange and yellow flames brought me to a warmer and calmer mindset. The gentle movement of the fire was as graceful as a tree in a soft breeze. The light emitted from the roaring fireplace created a serene and peaceful environment for relaxation.

3. Sunrise/Sunset

4. As the sun rises at dawn, urban-dwellers wake up early to get where they need to be. As they are on their way, they are greeted with the soothing vibrancy of the sunrise over the city. The warm reds, oranges and yellows shine down on them, giving solace to people about to have a busy day of work. The warm colors give a comforting aura. The sky around the sun glimmers with a faint but breath-taking glow from the sun. The gleaming rays brightens the day of the weary workers.

3. Theme: Hot

4. Looking at this photo, my mouth begins to dry and I become parched. When I thought of the theme “hot”, I immediately thought desert sun. There is something about the sun shines through the clouds  and spreads it’s beams wide. The variety of reds, oranges, and yellows, fill the sky creating an image of fire in the sky. Sunlight always warms you and is correlated with “hot”. Even on the coldest day, everything seems that much better when you are in the sun instead of shadows. It’s heat is a strong memory in the brain and therefore, the light itself triggers that feeling of hot power beating up against your skin. This picture is a perfect visual for that feeling. When you look at it, you get a little tingle against your skin because your mind wants to experience the sensation of heat it gets when it see’s the same image in the sky.

1. 12:00AM, March 7th, 2013 Crossing Oak Street

2. The stop light at the crosswalk is blinking red. A mixture of snow and rain is slowly falling down into puddles on the paved road.

3. Red. Red is the color of power. It is authoritative. It is present. It means STOP. As I cross the street to my dorm room, the stop light hangs in the sky, looking down like “Big Brother.” The red light is a beacon. It shines across the street and turns all of the condensed rain drops and puddles from a fluorescent amber to a blood red for just a second or two. The way the light casts itself on the rain makes it look as if there is an army of little people all looking up at the street light. They are ready for battle and know where their allegiance lies.  This light screams passion to me. It is powerful and strong. It makes its presence.

0April 25th, 2012 – 3:30AM – South Campus

There was a red light illuminating behind Roosevelt in the sky.

So the one thing I seem to constantly write about in these posts are the lights I see when I cannot sleep and go on walks. They always calm me down and tire me out so when I get back I can fall straight to sleep. I decided instead of walking around North Campus today, to walk around South Campus around all the academic buildings. I started to walk towards Emily Lowe and when I got there I was still energized. I decided to walk around the quad in front of Adams for a bit. This did not make me drowsy at all so I continued on to the quad in front of Roosevelt. It is here where I thought in my hidden exhaustion that I was going to be abducted by aliens. Yes, Aliens! Behind Roosevelt in the sky was an illuminating red light. It was beating at the steady pace of my heart. It filled the sky behind Roosevelt. It was a very solid red and I thought to myself, I am going to be abducted. You see, I saw “The Forth Kind” when it first came out and it was very scary to me. Apparently, aliens only abduct humans at 3:33AM. It was 3:32AM. I just stood there, looking at the beats of red, as they kept beating in the sky. It seemed so perfect behind Roosevelt as well, the perfect backdrop for an abduction. Soon, the light drifted away and I looked at my phone. It was 3:50AM. I had been abducted. No, really! After I got back to my dorm, my suitemate was still awake. I explained to him what happened and then he told me that he saw the light too. It was a police siren. I don’t believe that though. That is what the aliens want me to think. I think my suitemate is an alien. But I know better. It was aliens!

I love this lighting.  All of the different colors and different angles behind him make for something very aesthetically pleasing, but then you wonder why Dave himself isn’t all red.

3) THEME: Sunrises and Sunsets

4) DESCRIPTION: Colorado is a state overwhelmed with natural beauty. Roughly one half, the eastern half, is the plains. Simple yet beautiful. On the Western half there are great mountains offering landscapes and beautiful scenery for hundreds of square miles. The human race is fascinated with all that nature has to offer, from the tall mountains to the deep oceans and the grassy meadows to the rocky cliffs. People travel thousands of miles just to see certain spots on earth. Every evening, landscapes become enhanced all over the world as the sun sets and casts long, warmly lit shadows across the land. It is at this time that nature is enhanced and the shapes and contours of the world around us are modeled and emphasized by the beautiful light on the horizon provides for us. In Hawaii people flock from their condos each night to watch the golden ball of fire fall from bright yellow into a orange and red glow as it sets behind the ocean. When the sun returns the next morning there is always a new set of tourists and locals alike perched high above the clouds on volcanoes watching the first beams of light cast their warm shadows across the landscape in a similar way to the night before as the orange sun meets the blue sky once more.

In Colorado, many Denver Broncos fans comment on how “God must be a Bronco fan, otherwise why would the sunsets be orange and blue.” Sunsets and sunrises are universal in the fact that they happen all over the world, seven days a week, 365 days a year. There is always only one sunrise and one sunset in each day. The sun is always the same relative distance from earth each day and is burning energy in the same way; however just like a snowflake, no two sunrises or sunsets are the same. What makes a sunrise worth mentioning is when the air is pretty clear and there are a few puffy and interesting clouds in the sky. The true draw of a sunrise is not usually the actual vision of the light from the sun, but rather the lights reflection off of the particles in the air and the reflection of the colors on the clouds and other surfaces reflecting light.

What I really like about this sunrise is that it is different from the typical sunrise one might think of. In Colorado there are over 300 days of sunshine each year. If a storm of any kind moves in, it will never last long as the sun will burn off the clouds quickly and warm the air and cause the day to become very nice. This picture was taken just as the first few rays of sunlight were cresting the horizon. It had rained all night and the pollution in the air had been taken out by the rain and the air was clear and crisp. The clouds were just beginning to break and loosen up as the sun was rising. Unlike most “beautiful” sunrises and sunsets, there weren’t any big puffy clouds and rich blue sky; instead the clouds were heavy and dark and kept most of the sky black until it was thoroughly enriched by the sun’s rays. With the Sky being black it helps give a lot of contrast to the very rich and intense yellows and oranges brought out by the sun and it crests the horizon. The oranges and yellows of the light are so incredibly intense that they make the image feel as though it is being warmed. There is a great contrast with this intense light and the silhouettes of the naked cotton wood trees in the foreground. The lack of leaves on the trees gives a clearer silhouette and also creates a temperature contrast showing that it is most likely winter but the feeling the viewer gets from the colors is that the image is almost on fire. Coming back to the uniqueness of this sunrise brings me to a closing statement. Yes, I am a Colorado native and am proud to call it home, and despite how many people think that Tim Tebow is a god and is very close to Jesus I prefer to look at sunsets that remind me more of an october sky, a sky of orange and black.

1)   3/6/11- around 10 o’clock pm- walking from Lowe to the Library.

2)   The sky was an orange and yellow color.  It was cloudy and rainy and it was difficult to tell that it was actually cloudy.

3)   I was walking to print out photos and I glanced up at the sky.  It was then that I realized it was not the typical color I would expect.  I expected to look up and see black or grey because it was raining and it was nighttime.  Instead I looked up and saw this amazing orangeish yellow sky and it was so vivid.  It appeared to have no source but I figured that out to be the fact that the sky was cloudy.  It was a very interesting light because it reminded me of the sky in the picture Scream.  It had a warm feel to it, which I thought was very interesting because it was obviously raining and it was also cold.  The red, orange and yellow colors that were in it made it seem as though it was coming from the sun.  It was very similar to what a sunset would look like and it had many of the same qualities in terms of brightness, color and feel.

THE SUN

The sun is a powerful source of light, so when something as large as the moon interferes with its light, interesting things happen. The red color caused by the eclipse and the placement of the sun in the sky is an angry red, very saturated and vibrant. The seeming motion of the red streak from the sun to the right of the photo is interesting and gives an “action shot” feeling to the image. The presence of only black and red give an intensely ominous feeling to the image. Also interesting to me is the fact that the glow from the thin crescent of bright light that is visible creates a crescent moon-shaped field of color, visually turning the sun into its “opposite.”
