Lighting Observation #4

China at some point.

Objective: It’s just gray, cloudy, and green on the mountain.

Standing on top of the rice field on the mountain, looking out, a feeling of calm washes over me. Because we weren’t allowed to have our phones on the trip, it was easy to just surround ourselves with the people around us, as well with the environment, just being in the moment, having memories for life and experiences not many will have.

Light Observation #4

  1. March 1st, 2025 at 2:00 pm – Looking out the bay window of my house
  2. I am looking outside my bay window and see clouds that look like a painting, with bright white tops, dark shadowed bottoms, and the sun peeking through as they pass by.
  3. Outside my bay window, the sky stretches like a canvas, brushed with clouds that look almost painted. The sun peeks through in fleeting moments, casting a golden glow that dances along their edges. Some clouds are heavy with shadow, their undersides dipped in deep gray, making the bright white tops seem even more radiant. The contrast sharpens the soft details, as if the sky itself is sculpting them in light and shadow.

Lighting Observation #4

2/27/2025 Black Box, Shapiro Hall, Hofstra University

Objective: Dim light shines over the cast of Trojan Women. There are several light beams pointing at us but it is not bright to the point where it lights the box too much. They seem to be white with very little yellow.

The blackbox is such an ominous spot on campus and it’s perfect for the show. The lights are strategically placed to allow the darkness to remain. Trojan Women is a spooky and depressing play, even with the normal lights of the stage and no modifications we feel like we are in the ruins of Troy. I feel pain around me due to emptiness and spots of darkness surrounding me. The shadow covering the guards face creates an assertive aura around us.

Photo Observation #3

Theme: Night Life

The calm tone of the background lights give a cozy feeling bringing in audience and consumers to the location. The warm lights make you feel at home and can make the night a more fun time. The lights coming from the other building create an atmosphere that is viewed as excited. The night is young and fun is just starting.

Light Observation #4

1)2/24/25 5:39pm, looking out the window of the train on the way home to Ronkonkoma station

2) Objective: A pinkish, purple sunset that bleeds over the sky in Hicksville train station. The sky is starting to turn dark, and where it is not pink/purple there is a blueish haze settling over the sky

3) Subjective: The sun is hiding behind the clouds and the whole sky is covered in a pinkish/purple glow. The light reflects off the big flagstar building across the train station, and off of the glass windows. It is just starting to get dark outside so where the pink/purple of the sky ends it meets a blueish haze creating a pretty mix of color in the sky. You can tell that there is a transition from dusk to night happening, and there is a sense of calm that settles over the train station, despite it being rush hour.

Lighting Observation #4

  1. 2/27/25, 6:30 pm, Looking down the pathway to the Hofstra Museum of Art
  2. Objective: An orange, pink sunset frames the arch with the Museum of Art sign. The sky is still bright but the sunset backlights the pathway with a hazy glow.
  3. Subjective: The orange, pink haze of sunset glows against the backdrop of campus. As daylight fades students walk underneath the archway to the Museum of Art. The sun still lights up the sky but the backlit view enacts tunnel vision from all who look down the pathway. In just a few minutes it will be gone but color continues to shape and change the stream of light against the brick buildings.

Lighting Observation #4

1. 2/27/25, 3:00 PM, Emily Lowe Hall

2. Objective: Light shines into the room from three windows at varying heights and a door in the back of the room. The fluorescent lights are on and they are a yellow tone in the room.

3. A cool, white light streams into the room from the back, creating three expansive reflections on the grey marley floor. The windows reach from near the ceiling to a few feet above the floor and the door has two small rectangular windows leading light in from the center. There are light shadows of window beams darkening small strips. All of this light dissipates the further it reaches from the back of the room, leaving only whisps of bright white among the yellow tinted floors.

Lighting post #4

  1. 2/28/2025, 9:20 pm, hallway in my home
  2. Objective: A dark hallway is illuminated on the left from a slightly open door, shining warm light into the hallway and lighting one side.
  3. Subjective: The dark hallway surrounds me, shrouding me in blackness. I can barely see, barely able to make out my feet making their way towards my room. I feel a wave of anxiety wash over me, the unknown of my surroundings hastening my feet towards safety. Yet, as I move along the hallway, a light starts to emerge in front of me, wading its way out of the slightly open door. My anxiety starts to fade as I am reminded that I am not alone, that the darkness does not last forever. The warm light washes over the hallway, showcasing nothing scarier than wood floor and dusty corners. The warm light reminds me that joy and life exists and surrounds me.

Light Observation #4

2/28/20205 – 6:00, Front Street

Objective description: Car break lights shine at me with a beautiful sunset in the background. All the buildings of the approaching downtown area appear in silhouette.

Objective Description: Glowing red break lights shine directly at me yet appear to be muted in a way. The harsh glow usually in the night is not present, instead a light more contained to its source. The sky is lit with almost every color imaginable. Bright blues, yellows, greens, pinks, purples and oranges create a backdrop for the buildings, appearing more as dark shapes than as three dimensional. The buildings directly by me as I drive toward the sunset are washed with a grey blue, taking the color out of them completely. It is serene, as if the whole world is cast in shadow except for the bright colors painting the sky.

Lighting Observation 4

2/28/25- 2:15am- My Bedroom

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I turned on my red lava lamp in my bedroom.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The warm amber glow of the warm tungsten lightbulb ignites. The glow of the bulb irrupts like a warm fire, heating the red fluid inside the lamp. As the red liquid floated throughout the lamp, my pitch black room began to reveal itself, yet it was bathed in a devilish red glow. As I drifted to sleep, the soft, comforting warm light brought a level of safety, comfort, and warmth, that any cool white light could never be.
