Lighting Observation #1

1)January 10, 2025, 23:40(11:40pm) Venice, Italy

2) Objective Description: It’s nighttime by the water (of course), and the only visible light is from the restaurants and the boats.

3) Subjective Description: Having just finished dinner with my family, we decided to take a short stroll while eating gelato around the small part of Venice that we were on. Being able to walk around Venice during the day was cool, but when the sun went down, it was like a whole new city in a way; it was incredible, and the sounds from restaurants and the water.

Lighting Observation #1

  • Inside David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, Friday, February 7th, 2025, 9:20 pm
  • Objective Description: Beams of blue and yellow LED lights shine and brighten the dark arena from the center stage.
  • Subjective Description: The arena gets dark; the audience waits anxiously for the show to start. The only light we get is the ones from the stage, blue and gold representing Hofstra pride. It gives a warm welcome to whoever is about to “perform”; it’s a sign of support from our community. The lights come up from the stage as if they were fireworks; these lights give the performers a feeling of trust and strength.

Light Observation #1

  1. February 7th, 2025, 11:46 pm – Outside my Bedroom Window
  2. I am describing the street lamp outside my window, flickering on and off, casting flashes of light onto the tree in front of my house.
  3. Looking out my window, I see the street lamp stuttering in and out of darkness, its light erratic and unsettling. It flickers like a broken strobe, cutting through the stillness of the night with an unnatural pulse. Each flash momentarily reveals the tree in front of my house, its branches twisting in stark shadows that vanish just as quickly as they appear. The quiet outside feels thick, almost frozen in time, but the unsteady glow makes it seem as if something is lurking—just beyond the reach of the light.

Lighting Observation #1

1) February 7th, 8:53am, A friend’s room

2)Objective Description: A dark room with a  white ceiling covered with LED strip lights, a window to the left side with the morning sunlight shining through the closed curtains.

3)Subjective Description: Upon waking up in the morning the first thing I see are purple LED strip lights that hang on the white ceiling. They’re old and some of them are burnt out, so some of the purple lights have red patches in them. It’s still early so I notice there is a stillness in the room. Sunlight is creeping through parts of the curtain that are not completely closed. There are pictures that hang all over the walls in the room, some are of posters of bands, some of puzzles that a friend of mine has done, some pictures of things that he is interested in, and the LED strip lights reflect off of them. The room is quiet and the only noise that can be heard is the ceiling fan that is on. Even though the room isn’t mine, and even though I don’t live there, everything about the room makes me feel safe. As I look up at the LED strip lights I curl up into the warmth of the blanket and drift off back to sleep.

Light Observation #1

1)  Friday 02/07/2025 @ 9:41 pm sitting on my bed looking out the door

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The candle lamp by my bedside illuminates my room with a red glow from the Christmas candle below it. From the main entranceway, a stream of light peeks down the side hallway leading to my bedroom. The main light on the wall is off igniting a cozy atmosphere.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Within the walls of the small bedroom a quiet warmth quells the worries of the day. Reading my book under the warm red glow I see shadows dance, stretching and shrinking with every page turn. The smell of the candle fills the room with the feeling of home. In a corner, of a house, with friends but still alone the candlelight is a hug from my mother. The light from the open door begs interaction asking for a moment with a friend but the house is empty. So I return to my book and Christmas smells wondering when houses feel like homes.

Lighting Observation #1

1) February 7, 2:27 am, my dorm

2) All the lights are off except for the red glow of the motion-sensors for the automatic lights above mine and my roommates desks. They don’t put off much light but the led-clocks of the microwave and my roommates alarm clock feel especially bright in the dark room

3) The room is completely dark. I can see mine and my roommates desks that are lit by the red-automatic sensors above them, hers is neat and mine is cluttered, one of my goals for tomorrow- or today- was to organize it. If I turn around it’ll be dark again and I can go back to sleep. I can’t read the clock on the microwave that’s close to my bed but I can see the blue-LED clock and it feels strangely bright and alien in the dark room. I can see my roommates alarm clock, the LED-clock is red and it reads 2:27 am. I realize with dread that my alarm will go off in 3 1/2 hours and I anxiously try to force myself to go back to sleep.

Lighting Observation

1) February 7th, 2025, 3:17pm, my dining table

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I am describing the late afternoon light shining into the living room window, faintly lighting the dining room table from a distance

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Sitting at the dining room table, earlier than I normally get to, frustration and fatigue fill the air. The dining room is dimly lit by the late afternoon sun coming in from the distant living room window. The closed, tattered curtains leave a warm hue within the light. The warmth brings optimism and hope.

Lighting Observation 1

Thursday, February 6, 6:37 pm – Through my living room window

Objective Description: As nighttime falls, the world darkens an already dark and cloudy sky. Through my window, I can see a single street lamp, shining down onto the sidewalk and illuminating the telephone lines jutting off of it.

Subjective description: The world is dark outside, dampened from the ongoing storm of the day. Enshrining the world in darkness, the clouds cover the stars above, creating a claustrophobic feeling as if the whole sky is shrinking in on you. The world feels as if in slow motion, everyone existing in a trance. Everything is dulled. Yet, there is a single ray of light illuminating a small patch of the sidewalk, the light climbing its way up the light pole to shine on the wires of the telephone lines above. A question surrounds the light, asking who will enter. There is a mystique, a power that the light holds. The students who pass into the spotlight hold a strange power. The wires create an intricate design above, reflecting the light and entangling it into their branches. The branches, in their clear and distinguished lines catch the eye, the only unblurred lines in the world.

Lighting Observation #1

  1. December 15, 12:29am, Em’s Bedroom
  2. A white ceiling light that is covered with light pink jells. The ceiling is also covered with glow-in-the-dark stars.
  3. Sitting on a bean bag while watching Frozen 2 with Em, I finally noticed the blue tones on the screen were being covered by a light pink light. I then looked up and noticed the pink light coming from above me. With the small sounds from the tv, the glowing stars and pink light made the atmosphere feel calm, warm, and welcoming.

Lighting Observation # 1

My bedroom, Thursday February 6, 3:25 P.M.

Objective Description: Sunlight is coming in from the windows to the right and behind me. There is a contrasting soft light coming from my closet and the strip of LED’s on my ceiling.

Subjective Description: The world outside casts a stark bright light through the slivers of the windows not covered by the opaque tan and grey curtains drawn over them. The recent storm has transformed the sky into a bright white, overcast haze which combined with the tone of the curtains dimly illuminates the room in a cold light, the only sense of warmth coming from the yellowish light spilling out from the slightly ajar door of my small closet and the orange tinted LEDs turned down to their lowest setting. This bit of warmth the beacon of comfort shining against the stark cold, almost creating the sense that it is protecting me from the frigid world surrounding me.
