Cold

Theme: Cold

I visited my sister at Penn State over the holiday weekend and experience the colder climate she endures on a daily bases. To me the tones in the sky demonstrate a crisp winter morning. In the foreground the sky is a richer, deeper blue. Whereas in the back it fades to a softer, lighter shade of blue. The fade from blue to white gives the sense that it gets colder as the sky continues, getting closer and closer to the color of snow. Additionally, there is an evenly distributed bright light with cool tones, making the moment feel even crisper. In contrast, the lines creating the shadows are sharp and harsh, again giving a cooler feeling.

Photo Observation- Cold

A pathway in central park, after a winter storm. The path, trees, and benches are covered in a layer of bright white snow. Practically untouched. The lighting is very gray, giving it a cold feeling.  The streetlights give hints of color but are drowned out by all the white and gray tones around them.

Description: This is the sunrise from my driveway while I was waiting for the bus. The darkness, save for the sun, and the blue tone diffused on the snow makes the scene feel cold.

Lighting Observation

Time: 6:30pm

Location: Times Square New York

Objective: The streets of Times Square are illuminated by the many billboards, streetlights, and building lights. There is no light from the sky. The clouds are covering the moon.

Subjective: As I walk down the streets toward Times Square, I started to take in all the billboard lights. There’s something about all the lights that gave me a sense of warmth and comfort.

Lighting observation

Date: 02/17/2023

Time: around 2:00 pm

Location: Outside Adam’s playhouse

Objective: The sky is filled with light and dark gray clouds. The pavements are much darker than usual since there was a light drizzle happening and it was also raining heavier prior to this time as well. There is little to no visible sunlight coming through the clouds, so there is mainly just a wash of cool gray throughout the atmosphere.

Subjective: Just like most rainy days, the heavy cool gray creates for a more dull and gloomy atmosphere. Not only that, but I kept thinking back to the story of Noah’s ark when I saw the rainy skies today. I can associate times like these to the moment when the biblical characters noticed the warning of the flood about to begin and the feeling of impending doom with what was going to happen. Like this moment was a stepping stone to something that could be worse.

Lighting Observation

While working production for Woyzeck I was I was sitting on a ladder attempting to attach legs to a platform that was suspended in the air. While struggling to drill the screw into the wood, the majority of the lights suddenly went out, and only a handful were left at a low brightness.

In this moment I became very aware of necessary good lighting is to do not only construction, but anything. As they began to adjust the lights I notice that cooler tones of light allowed me to see what I was doing more clearly. For the rest of the session as I worked on the platforms I could not help but notice how easily a change in colors and positions of light can affect the work someone is doing. This constant changing in light made me feel flustered and confused as I did had to adjust how I was working in order to better see.

Lighting Moment

  2. A lamp on a post in the Netherlands courtyard
  3. The white light radiating off of the lamp post made the sky around it glow faintly. It illuminated the small snowflakes raining from the sky, making the moment seem magical. The light itself was so round and bright, I could have mistaken it for the moon. The cool toned lamp made the snow falling on my face feel colder because of the mood the light gave off.

Light Observation

Date/Time/Location: 2/17/23 around 1:45PM at Bernon Hall.

Objective: small amounts of sunlight coming through the above skylight through drops of rain on the glass.

Subjective: Like a fish on a rainy day, looking up towards the top of the ocean, beams of sunlight being distorted by water dimly light up the dark hallway, giving me the perspective of a fish looking up through the water, drifting about the seas with a calm life, a sense of peace after a long and challenging week.

Lighting Moment

Time: 11:07 P.M.

Location: between Lowe Hall and Memorial Hall

Objective: A light under the covered walkway connecting Lowe and Memorial Halls. The outside of the arch and tunnel is not lit, only the inside walls.

Subjective: I was on my way back to my dorm after spending five hours working on a drafting in 216. There was no one else out around me and seeing just the single light surrounded by black felt lonely.

Lighting Observation 2

Feb. 15th, 2023, 5:09pm, dorm in Vander Poel Hall

Objective: The sunlight is coming through my roommate Maggie’s window on the opposite side of the room. She has some burned-out gels taped to her window that Jim Hart once said I could take. Two are dark blue and five are a more cerulean color; she taped them up in the shape of a smiley face, with the dark blue as the eyes and the cerulean as the smile. The sunlight shines through the window, through the gels, and onto her wall, creating crisp shadows where the mullions of the window block the light and a dual-toned blue smiley face.

Subjective: This is a cheerful scene. The gels create a silly, colorful grin on the beige backdrop of our dorm room walls. I was on a video call with my grandparents, and I had to pause on my end just to take a picture of the sunlight on Maggie’s wall. There’s the barest hint of the beginning of golden hour in the glowy tint of the sunlight coming through, and it feels like a happy and comforting room to be in, at this moment. The light-lined shadow of the stacked blinds at the top of this sunny image make me aware of the fact that her blinds aren’t down, and that she has left them open on purpose, to let the light in and uplift the vibe around here. It isn’t hot, but it’s a warm environment.
