Lighting Moment #2

  1. The Drounge in Emily Lowe, 2/11, 11:00pm
  2. The room was dark with only one yellow lamp on. Most people were out of the building because it was late. I could see a few lights coming through the big window and the door, but other than that it was just me and the little lamp across the room. It created many shadows in the room but not in a creepy way, more in a peaceful way.
  3. It was very cozy. I had finished rehearsal and I was waiting for cabaret. Most people had left but the chatter I could hear down the hall added to the cozyness and didn’t take away from the peace. I had my book with me and hadn’t felt that calm in a while. I normally prefer being with people, but I was perfectly content to be sitting there alone.

2nd Photo Observation

  1. October 19, 2025 – 9:33 pm – Spiegel Theater
  2. Theme – Night Life
  3. I took this photo during APO’s coffeehouse last semester. I loved the way the stage lights were casting shadows of everyone’s silhouettes across the stage. With the general vibe of this event being one of comfort and togetherness,  I felt the warmer hues in the lights (pink, yellow, and a red sunset lamp in the background) brought out that feeling even more.

Lighting Observation #2

1. My living room, 11:17pm

2. I was going to write about a lighting moment I saw while I was on my train home, but just now as I was writing it I looked out the window and saw just one lone street lamp surrounded by darkness. It’s a pretty neutral white light, but has major contrast against the darkness of the night.

3. Being the only source of light in a void of darkness, this scene could come off as scary, but it could also be comforting. It’s right outside my house, like it’s guiding me home after being away.

Lighting Observation 2

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/13 10:32pm My living room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: In the living room, we have christmas lights up remaining from our decorating: One string of purple lights above the sliding door, which reflects in the class it is leaning on, one string of cool white icicle lights that stretch out across the adjacent wall, and the rainbow christmas lights wrapped around our also lingering fake tree.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The many colors in this room feel quirky together, as they contrast the other decorating in the room that indicates that it hasn’t been christmas in a long time. This lighting is currently lighting my friends as they play guitar and sing together, which is exactly what I think this fun lighting is appropriate for, because it feels both quirky and endearing.

Light Observation Two – Zizi Compton

  1. February 12, 2026 12:35 AM, Netherlands Bridge
  2. In the middle of the night, walking alone back to my dorm room, the Nethies span lights shone down with dark spots between lights. But the windows show lights from cars, streets, and even reflect the light from inside.
  3. The area itself looks almost like a hospital hallway from a horror movie, without the lights flickering on and off. The dark spots between the slightly warm lights create an eerie atmosphere. Walking alone in the night made me feel uneasy, like I was about to be murdered.

Lighting Observation 2 – Stanley Morgan

1) 2/13/26 – Approximately 3AM – Orange House (Netherlands) Dorm Room

2) In the dark of the night, a faint orange light comes from a lamp post outside, streaming into Orange 825, located on the second floor. Due to the elevation, the light streams into the room in the darkness, giving a faint glow to the inside.

3) The light from the lamp post outside felt surreal, and almost eerie in a way. In the dark, solemn night, a bright orange glow reeks itself into my dorm. It’s gleam against the fragments of snow outside make it even brighter, casing a room in an odd, uncomfortable haze. When I awoke in the middle of the night, I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the light, and how aware and uneasy it made me feel.

Light Observation #2

1) 2/13/2026 – 5:14pm – My Dorm Room

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: There aren’t any lights in in my dorm room. The sun is setting through my window in a more yellow color, than orange. It is lighting up my closet and the right side of my desk and room. My microwave has a few seconds left on the timer and is casting a neon blue glow on my the left side of my wall and desk opposite of the sunset.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: There is a contrast of warm natural light and cool LED light in my room makes for an interesting mixture of colors. The lights are comfortable though, it is a lighting moment I have gotten used to on Fridays when I come home from work.

2nd Lighting Observation

  1. February 12, 2026 – 10:35 am – On my walk to Emily Lowe Hall for Stage Lighting Class
  2. The light from the sun was intensely blinding with its perfect natural glow, which was really nice to see cause it felt like the sun hadn’t been out in a long time. It was the right amount of blue in the sky, and it just had a happy vibe to it.
  3. When I saw that for once the clouds did not hide the sun and the sky was just the perfect shade of blue, I knew it was going to be a good day (which it was). Everything about the day was pure luck and good vibes, and it was all because the lighting observation of the sun was just so perfect that I knew the day was gonna be great.

2nd Photo Observation – KS

  1. 01/03/2026 – 6:68pm – New York City, New York
  2. THEME – Night Life
  3. This photo is from New York City a few days after New Years while I was walking around at night. The Radio City lit-up lettering is in view multiple times in the background along with the lights of buildings in the background, phones, and the streetlights. All the striking lights of the signs and buildings make the city streets really pop. It fits the night life scene because of the amount of people on the city streets at night on their way to do whatever they are set out to do while the taxis and windows are constantly lit and the city and people noises are constantly loud. The city is alive and bright.

2nd Lighting Observation – KS

  1. 02/10/2026 – 5:35pm – Hofstra University (Next to the Graduate Residence Hall)
  2. The light I am talking about is coming from a sunset that I saw next to the Graduate Residence Hall on campus. It was made up of primarily orange color, and then faded upwards to a light pink, then a grey-ish purple color, then to just grey. The light reflected against the snow on the ground and shined through the tree line near the parking lot. The bright orange color was located at the bottom of the horizon and was almost in a perfect horizontal line.
  3. This lighting moment made me stop in my tracks. I was about to cross the street to the student center, but I had to pause right on the curb in order to capture the scene. It literally felt like the sun itself was going to bed with the fading orange light and the purples and greys and pinks were the sun’s way of saying goodbye and the moon saying hello. It was a beautiful and heart stopping view.
