  3. This is a picture I took when visiting Florida over winter break. My friend and I wanted to take the opportunity of being close to the beach in such nice weather and see the sunrise. We were there from when it was still dark till the sun had fully risen, but this picture of the sunrise where you can even see the sun is one of my favorites. Everything looks so pale and you can’t even see the sun, but you can get a sense for the cool ocean morning air. We were some of the only people on the beach that morning. I remember this sunrise fondly, because this trip to Florida was my first time traveling for fun– not just to or from college– by myself with a friend. It was such a calm morning, and being able to listen to the waves is something I miss with our freezing cold weather up here.

2)I took this photo on 12/29/25 outside my house.

3) Sunrise/Sunset

4) This photo is a gorgeous sunset I saw right after Christmas. It is probably the most vibrant sunset I’ve ever seen on the east coast, especially in the winter. The sun is below the tree line, lighting them from behind, and leaving them looking almost black, which contrasts starkly against the bright warm colors of the sky. The remaining Christmas lights on the house in the background of the photo add a matching sprinkle of that yellow light you can see where the sun is most visible. The small puddles of melted snow on the ground reflect the colors back up, filling the sky with more light, and the photo with more color.

Photo Observation One – Zizi Compton

  3. I took this photo while on my way to the airport to spend a few days in LA with my brother. I have many beautiful sunset photos I could have chosen but I love this photo for many reasons as it feels symbolic in different ways. It was the first (and only) sunrise I have seen of 2026, so it felt like a new beginning. But in this photo, the sun is more in the background and it almost looks like the sky is on fire more than anything which feels symbolic to the state of the world, the state of my mind at the time, and I remember driving towards it and staring off into space, wondering what it meant for where I was going. It is chaotic and beautiful and calm all at the same time which I feel perfect for the beginning of a day that could go any which way.

  3. I was on vacation in Hawaii back in 2024 and attended a Luau, a traditional Hwaiian gathering. While the hula dancers were performing, I noticed the sunset behind them. The sunset gave me a feeling of comfort. Having strangers from all around the world experience the day turn into night while enjoying Hawaiian traditions gave me a sense of community. The bright orange color from the sun makes the silhouette of the trees and dancers so much more present. The blue sky just barely blending in with the orange light provided by the sun creates a form a juxtaposition.

3. I used to be really into photography, specifically taking pictures of the sky. I was walking on the boardwalk with my Grandma and I saw a perfect photo opportunity so I made her take me out onto the pier to get a good angle. I took a lot of pictures in that moment, but this one is by far my favorite. The way the sun is so golden and centered with the rays coming out is all encapsulating. To this day this is still one of the pictures I am proudest of.

3) I was looking for a nice picture of the sunset since I think that sunsets are way more prettier. As I was looking, I saw this picture. It immediately struck me because I felt like I had been here before. It gave a feeling of nostalgia as I looked at it. This picture reminded me of the days where I would sit outside and watch the sunset near my apartment with my family. The dark orange color to this sunset reminds me of the idea of transitioning to something new. It reminds me of the transition I made from high school to college. Just like when the sun goes down, there will be times in my life like that as well. However, every day is a brand new day.

3) Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

4) Golden lighting casting over the highway, spiraling out from the sunset onto the Earth below. The sun burns a bright ember as it starts to set, with it’s soft golden rays cascading onto the cars as they pass. As I travelled farther into the direction of the glorious sun, I wasn’t blinded, but stared in admiration.

  3. I had a completely different picture for this prompt but I looked up at the clouds before heading into work and decided to head outside. I’m so glad I did because the direct sunlight created a really cool effect on the camera. The most interesting thing to me was the way that the light catches the bottom of the cloud and reflects off the top of the surrounding cars and snow. Additionally, the rays of light coming from from the sun and the way it shines through the trees are so perfect it’s hard to believe that this is the raw image I took.

  3. In high school I saw a lot of sunrises and this is my absolute favorite. The pinks and oranges created as the light travels through the clouds as it gets further from the sun makes me feel at peace.

1st Photo Theme: Sunrise/Sunset

  3. This photo was taken by me after my (2:40-3:35) writing comp class on a “normal Wednesday”, and I say “normal Wednesday” lightly because, in reality, after my morning (9:40-11:05) class, I would quite literally have to full speed sprint over to Hagendorn Hall for my Italian class, which was never my favorite part of my day. Not to be dramatic, but this made my day immediately. When I saw this sunset as I was walking up to the Hague dorm in the Netherlands, it was breathtakingly gorgeous, with the orange layering nicely with the blue sky. It was a moment that had to be captured. It just makes me really happy whenever I look at this photo, because it reminds me why I am at the school of my dreams doing what I love.
