Lighting Observation #8

1) 4/1/26 – 6:55 PM – A hallway with a window on the second floor of Orange House, located in The Netherlands Dormitory Complex.

2) Sunlight streams through a window into a hallway, reflecting off the waxed floors. The shadow of the window projects warped onto the brick wall, creating perspective.

3) Warm light streams through the window, painting the dorm in golden light in spite of the dull, manufactured lights that usually contain the campus dorms. The warm light not only adds the promise of life, but fills one with happiness and serenity before the solemn night. The golden rays portray the shadow of the window onto the whole wall of the hallway, lighting the path to a brighter day tomorrow.

Lighting Observation #8

  1. April 1st – 11:53pm – Outside of admission’s office
  2. A bright white light shining up through the bottom of a clear plastic cup filled with iced tea
  3. Last night I was drinking out of a clear plastic cup after leaving.a restaurant. There was iced tea in the cup and it was a large cup. For a moment out of curiosity as I was walking home, I set the cup on top of a light that I was passing by to see how it would look in the liquid. This was a very specific and unique angle that I have not tackled in my observations yet. This light and liquid relationship really doesn’t happen unless you put something on top of a light or you are at an aquarium. To watch how the light dances through the various little particles in the liquid is so fascinating. The bright beams of light finding their way through the substance seem to slow time down. The peaceful, gentle floating of the beverage whether it be tea particles or bubbles was highlighted beautifully by the shining white light coming from beneath. This slow, serene, suspended visual was very beautiful in the late hours of night and brought on a gentler, more deliberate kind of lighting moment that I hadn’t yet observed this semester.

8th Lighting Observation – Mia Gozinsky

  1. April 2nd, 2026 – 8:36 Pm – Hauge Dorm Lounge
  2. Gloomy day on campus, with some kind of drousyness, but the light inside while I was eating my dinner was very comforting and relaxing in the moment, and made the room feel less gloomy than it did outside.
  3. The brightness of the main Hauge Lounge light illuminating the room at night always makes me feel good in some way, especially when it’s just me with my headphones in, and it’s quiet. It fills me up with peace and happiness.

Lighting Observation #8

  1. 4/1/2026 11pm in my partner’s dorm
  2. The room is dark save for a reading lamp and the light coming through the window. The lights on the outsides of the buildings illuminates the other dorm and casts light through the window
  3. On a rainy evening with my partner and some friends, the soft lights in the room radiate calm. It pretty much only lights the desk and the windowsill. The shadows in the room outweigh the lights and make it easy for me to fall asleep about an hour later.

The light cast on the cat makes me reallllly want to pet that cat. The light is all encompassing, there’s no other visible light other than the very background past the bridge and it gives this divine feel.

1. September 16, on eBay

2. advertisement/desire

3. I collect generation 1 My Little Ponys and I got this one in September. She was $38 including shipping which is the most I’ve spent on one pony, but she was in great condition and still had her original accessories so it was worth it. This is the cover photo from her listing on eBay.

  1. —- Nicole Kidman AMC Commercial
  2. Theme — Advertisement/Desire
  3. This is a screenshot from the Nicole Kidman AMC Ad that shows in the previews. In this preview she talks about all of the reasons why people come to the movies. The emotions from watching a movie and the feeling you get seeing one with friends. This specific shot uses the movie projector as a light behind her also creating a nostalgic feeling that makes you want to come back to the movies.

  1. Coca Cola AMC Ad
  2. I was originally between this ad and the Nicole Kidman one when Maggie uploaded the same shot that I was going to use so I decided to go back and use this one instead. Coca Cola is always using nostalgia and warmth in their AMC ads. Their commercials help generate feelings of coming together with actors often starting apart and then ending the commercial sharing the drink or drinking it together at the movies.

  1. Monster Energy Lego Set Advertisement
  2. Theme: Advertisement/Desire
  3. I chose this photo due to the fact that the lighting exemplifies the items being advertised, and the lighting shows the dimension of the items being sold. The lighting is entirely composed of cool white light, a common theme with most advertisements. We, as an audience feel composed to the lighting to buy or want this item as the composition of the image and the lighting work together to emphasize the products.

2)This is a still from the iconic AMC advertisement that they show before every movie.

3) Advertisement/desire

4) This ad focuses on highlighting the spirit of wonder in the world of cinema. It makes movie-goers the believers of the world. In this advertisement, The projector light shines directly on Kidman’s head from behind. It represents how movies are an enlightening experience, to be treated with awe. It takes place in an otherwise dark, shiny theater, which gives it an air of luxury in order to justify the insane prices at AMC. This ad is in contrast with the general idea we have of wearing pajamas to the movies and hanging out with friends by bringing us closer to the lofty artists who make the films.

  1. April 2nd – 1:43am – Cologne Ad
  2. Theme – Advertisment
  3. When we were told that advertisement/desire was the theme for this project, I struggled for a bit to find an advertisement that really spoke to me. I really wanted to find one that used its lighting as a real tool to create some specific effect of desire. Eventually I recalled a type of advertisement that always amuses me: cologne. Whether it be oddly hyper masculine super bowl commercials or some forced sense of suave that men ry to capture in a cologne commercial, they always stand out to me as odd. The lighting always is toned to capture seem deep, undiscovered feeling of want for the person who is wearing the cologne, but personally it always has felt like it misses the mark and just ends up feeling sort of silly. However, it is still extremely clear that desire is the goal they are trying to accomplish with its dark tones and misty texture. Cologne advertisements therefore capture the strongest effort of sensual lighting and mood to attempt to reel new customers in, maybe it works for some, or maybe the lesson to be learned is that sometimes less is more when it comes to showing off your product!
