8th Lighting Observation- Saniy Coates

1) March 31st, 2026 at 6:30 pm (Axinn Library)

2) I had went to the Axinn Library to try to get some work done (only spent around a hour and a half in there). Since it was pretty hot outside, the sun was shining outside as well. So when I had walked in the library, I could see the sun just beaming the desks that were closest to the window. As I went up higher, the sun got even more apparent and provided a relaxing place to sit and lock in on work.

3) The atmosphere reminded me of when you walk into a greenhouse. All of the natural sunlight hits you at once and makes you feel relaxed/cozy. I have always been a person who loves to watch the sunbeams out of the windows so whenever I can, I open the window and just sit on the closest thing I can. Especially since I been on the stressed side lately, it was nice to get outside of my dorm and sit in a place where I could mentally relax/have my headphones in while also getting my work done.

Photo Observation- Advertisement/Desire (Saniy Coates)

1) SONY headphones Commercial

2) Theme: Advertisement/Desire

3) When I seen that the photo theme was about advertisement, I immediately started thinking of this SONY commercial. The whole point of this commercial was to tell the audience that their product helps with getting rid of all distractions around you. The lighting stuck out to me because it gave a sense of calm and peace, despite a bit of a messy environment around the actor in the middle.  The light mainly shines near the back where the actor is but as the camera moves more backward, there is a less shadow surrounding the place.

7th Photo Theme: Advertisement/Desire – Mia Gozinsky

  1. May 16th, 2025 – 10:20Pm – Jellycat that I found out was retired :<
  2. Theme: Advertisement/Desire
  3. At the time I took this screenshot, I was watching TikTok videos of Jellycats, and this one came across my For You page and reminded me of the pig from my favorite childhood book, Charlotte’s Web. I checked if this one was on sale, but unfortunately, I found out that it was actually a retired Jellycat, which made me sad. The shadows that the light made underneath it, I guess, made up for it. Hope to find it one day.

Photo observation #7

  1. Ad for Pringles – released for Super Bowl 2026
  2. Theme – Advertisement/desire
  3. This is the Super Bowl Pringles ad that Sabrina Carpenter was in. The way the lighting highlights the individual pringles is what made me think of it for this theme. The way the light is angled highlights the shape of all the Pringles stacked.

Photo Observation #7

  1. September 23, 2021 – New York City
  2. Theme – Advertisement/Desire
  3. This is outside of the M&M store in Times Square. The bright colors from the M&Ms and the bright yellow bill board create a colorful and exciting scene. It draws your eyes towards the store. Since the M&Ms are big and bright you can see them from far away and they are a different shape from the many bill boards in Times Square. It becomes almost a landmark and everyone recognizes the brightness and colorfulness of the advertisement.

8th Lighting Observation

  1. April 1st, 2026 – 3:37 pm – My Room
  2. I was sitting on my bean bag in my room doing homework. The natural light coming in through my window was soft but still bright enough to fill the space with a slightly warm tone. Given where the sun was at this point in the day, it was casting a shadow of my windows onto the opposite wall which was cool to see. Without the artificial lights on and I felt more relaxed despite doing a somewhat stressful task.
  3. The primary light source was the sunlight coming through my window, which was a warm hue. The big shadow of my window frame on the opposite wall added some cooler contrast, but it was still a soft shadow. The mix was subtle, but it made the room feel more cozy and comfortable rather than focused (which I think is how it would’ve felt if I had my lamps on).

Lighting Moment #8

  1. April 1st, 3:50pm – Walking from my dorm to the Student Center
  2. Ahead of me I could see light clouds, almost sunny, but when I looked behind me there were super dark clouds. It made the light super blue. It didn’t quite look like a nice spring day anymore, it very quickly felt like it was late evening.
  3. The dark lighting gave off a very ominous mood. The blue lighting, contrasting the bright sun changed the whole idea of the day. It was a significant lighting moment because while I looked ahead of me, it felt like summer was coming and it made me excited, but looming right behind me were dark storm clouds. It felt like something out of a movie. The two types of lighting were very contrasting.

Photo- Advert

A Computer Magazine in the 90s advertising Compuserve.

Theme: Advertisement/Desire

The feeling of this photo is that of a nice country morning. Bright light, the quality you would imagine the morning sun being, is coming in the window to the side of the subject. The light in the room in combination with the light coming in the window gives a nice warm (but definitly not hot!) glow. It gives you that feeling that you might envision waking up with plenty of rest to the early morning sounds of a quiet country town. You stretch and yawn and you can tell by the light it’s going to be a beautiful day. Especially because you have Compuserve on your laptop to help you sell your decoy ducks!

7th Photo Observation

  1. June 17, 2025 – 3:09 pm – Taco Bell
  2. Theme – Advertisement/Desire
  3. I found this photo on a People magazine article which highlighted the addition of crispy chicken to the Taco Bell menu. The image uses a strong, bright, white light from different angles which allows you to see all the details of the food. The intensity of the light highlights the texture of the chicken and makes the sauces shiny, which makes everything look more appealing. The lighting is also cool toned, which makes the warm colors of the food more inviting. Against the white background, your attention is fully on the food.

Lighting Observation #7

  1. 3/28 9pm in front of the empire state building
  2. The streets are well lit by lights and advertisements but it’s past sunset. The moon is bright and visible next to the empire state building which is lit up blue as well.
  3. Though it’s distinctly nighttime, the lights surrounding me make it feel like midday. Its a chaotic environment on the ground with so many light sources and sounds but looking up presents an entirely different feel. As i cast my gaze up, I cant help but feel calm. The moon is easy to see and the tallest building is my favorite color, it’s just a breath of fresh air in such a crazy an active day.
