2nd Lighting Observation

  1. February 11th, 2026 – 11:49 am – Axinn Library, 4th Floor
  2. I was sitting at my desk at work. There are a lot of screens around me, including 2 monitors, my laptop, and a large television behind me. The fluorescent lights above are on, so the room, is very well lit. The walls are pretty empty, since we just moved into the library as our new space, and they are grey. The elevator doors are grey, but when they open you can see the walls are made of an orange-y wood with warm lights.
  3. The room is incredibly cool toned, quiet, and all the lighting is pure white with a blue undertone. It’s a boring environment, but keeps you awake. Every time the elevator opens, my eye is drawn to it because it’s so warm when contrasted with the overwhelming cool of the office.

the bright, warm toned sun peaks through and under the clouds, and reflects beneath the ocean bellow. The light is the clear, main focus of the picture- as it’s front and center of the picture. The cool tones of the foam from the ocean and the clouds above (in the front of the photo) frames the bright light too, which further emphasizes the light.

lighting observation 1

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/9/26, 8pm, Lowe 106

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: the large room is lit by bright, cool/neutral toned overhead lights. occasionally car headlights will shine in through the windows from the parking lot outside, but not often.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The lights are stark, and seem to replicate lighting like a hospital room, however it is not unsettling or uncomfortable. It is clear the room is meant to be used productively, rather then a room meant for relaxation that might be lit by warmer, dimmer tones.

Lighting Observation #2

  1. February 10th – 2:36pm – my bedroom

  2. Many small Christmas lights strung around the border of my room at the top of the walls. They light up my room. 

  3. I put up these lights on the day I moved into this room almost 2 years ago now. They have always given off warm, welcoming glow. They’re dim and have never completely lit up the room. There has been times where things have been hard to find or visualize due to the lack of light shining from my favorite lights, but I didn’t mind. I love the lowlight peaceful feeling that the lights create. Over the past few months many of the little bulbs have been burning out and it’s starting to create the feeling that the life of the room itself is dying, and in a way, it is. I will be moving out in 3 months and warm, sweet lights of my surprisingly large room will fade and the chapter of it being my home will close with it. The lights, or rather the growing lack of lights, perfectly suit this moment in time.

Photo Observation #1

  1. May 15th, 2016 – 5:20am – Cape Henlopen, Delaware
  2. Theme – Sunrise/Sunset
  3. I took this picture when I was 12. I remembered it as soon as this assignment was mentioned, it was the first time I ever saw a sunrise in my life. The first time I had gotten up that early, me and my friends all woke up at 4am on a beach camping trip to watch the sun slowly rise over the Atlantic Ocean. This picture speaks to me for nostalgic reasons of course, but also there is something very specific and charming about a sunrise. It has a paleness and slight shade over it that sets in apart from a sunset. The line of orange delicately bouncing off the ripples of the morning ocean is stunning. Watching the sand on the beach go from the light gray of the twilight slowly into the soft pink from the glow of the sun was beautiful. It speaks volumes to how light from the sun interacts beautifully with the surfaces of the Earth. There’s something particularly stunning about a light that means beginning.

1st Photo Observation

  1. January 28th, 2026 – 5:00pm – Unispan
  2. Theme – Sunrise/Sunset
  3. I took this photo while walking home over the unispan after getting dinner from the Student Center. What struck me was how pink and orange this particular sunset was, which immediately caught my attention. The light was causing the inside of the unispan to take on the more orange hue. It was very warm despite how freezing it was that day. I had been running around at my different jobs that day, so it was nice to pause for a moment and notice the sunset. It reminded me of color starvation, since I hadn’t really seen any warm colors that day, so this stuck out to me and made me feel at ease.

Lighting Observation #1

1) 2/6/2026 – 10:13pm – Outside of HofstraUSA

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The street lamps around Hofstra USA and Dutch Treats and the interior of the two buildings. The streetlights were cooler toned, whereas the interior lighting of the dining halls was warm. The light reflected off of the snow and ice on the ground and the snow falling in the sky. Occasionally, a car would drive by on the street supplying more light to see with. 

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The cooler lights of the lampposts outside of Hofusa aid to the low temperature of the nighttime snow fall that is occurring. Despite standing on the street waiting for the night shuttle, I can see into HofUsa and Dutch Treats. Warm light pools out of the windows and doors, showing me the relief that I might feel by stepping into the heated dining hall. The occasional car that drives by raises my hopes that it might be the shuttle to take me out of the cold.

Lighting Obsevation 1

  2. A desk lamp with a slightly warm tone as the only source of light in the room. It illuminates the windowsill and the decorations. It’s positioned in the right corner with the lamp curved down pointing at the phone charger and jewelry placed on the window
  3. Despite this moment happening at past midnight, the placement and warm tone of the light made it feel like the sun setting in the corner of the window. It cast a soft light over me and my friends, illuminating the sides of their faces and the ground. The angle of the light cast brightened the room just enough to give the atmosphere of a blissful evening well spent and made me grateful for my friends company.

Lighting Observation #1

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/6/2026 – 10:55pm – My home bedroom

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A table lamp with a warm white light placed on the ground. All the lights in the room were off and no light leaking through the windows. The light created dramatic shadows of the objects placed around it.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I drove back home for the weekend and I walk into my bedroom to see a lamp I’ve never seen before. This misplaced lamp gave a warm feeling to the room; a sense of comfort that I was back home. It gave me a relaxing and calming feeling after being stressed from working all day.

Lighting Observation #1

1) February 6th, 2025, 9;50 pm (Alliance Hall)

2) The sun has gone down, therefore the room lights have gone to let in some light. The main source of light is more to the left, so my roommate’s side is a tad brighter than my side. As you go inside the room, the light is pointed to the “Sinners” poster hung up on the wall, making a nice contrast from the more simplistic parts of room.

3)  As I walking in my room from dinner, my eyes immediately started hurting from the main white lights in the hall being too bright. But as soon as I got to my room, they got a lot more relaxed due to the yellowish tint to them. That realization made me a bit homesick as my home has the same color vibe to it. But it also filled me with the feeling of optimism as well. Although I felt a bit homesick, I also felt content that this feeling will go away and that I am where I am for a reason.
