Lighting Observation #1 (2/6)

1) 2/2/26 10:30pm between Alliance and Bill of Rights hall

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: hidden under the snow is a small foot light used to light the pathway between the trees by the bus stop in between Alliance and Bill of Rights halls. It is not very bright, barely creating a small yellow circle around where the light would be if it wasn’t covered by the snow.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The lighting is warm and small. It feels like hope, like a candle shining a dark room. It is quiet and impractical, as it doesn’t serve it’s main purpose to light the path, but it feels hopeful in a way small things tend to.

Lighting Observation #1

1) February 6th, 6:22 am, Alliance Hall dorm

2) It was early in the morning before the sun was really up. The lights that illuminate the paths were shining through my window. The blinds were half way down and there were some objects obstructing the light, creating shadows that that made the light shine in a unique pattern on my wall while the rest of the room was dark.

3) The light on my wall gave me a very calm mood. The shapes that were formed remind me of  Geometry Dash levels I’ve played with calming music. Geometry Dash itself is also a game I play to destress and calm myself. This light is usually the last thing I see before falling asleep and the first thing I see when I wake up, and for me it creates a perfect mood to start and end the day with.

Lighting Observation 1

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 2/6/26 6:30 my bedroom

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Next to my bed, mounted on the wall is a sign from Guys & Dolls with fairy lights attached to the back of it. It is the only light source in the room, other than the small amount of twilight outside the two windows. The sign has amber gels lining the front of it in the cut-out words “Howard’s Fine Furniture” that the fairy lights shine through. The light bleeds out of the sides of the sign too, because it has no side masking. There is light cast all around the sign by it and some coming through the gels at the front, dimly lighting the room with an amber shade.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This lighting is warm and dull. It feels like driving past a diner sign late at night. It is fun and positive because it is an impractical light to work with, functioning more like a nightlight for getting into bed.

4) ASSIGN CATEGORY & TAGS: Category should be “Lighting Observation”. Include your first name as at least one tag, other optional tags can be added to describe the post.

1st Lighting Observation

1) January 28th, 1:41 PM, Hofstra University Student Center

2) In the entrance to the Student Center, snow is seen on the glass above where one would stand. Light reflects off of the snow, and protrudes below to the entrance. The snow creates cracks in the light, as well as areas where the snow blocks the light due to it’s density, and areas where the snow shines in. The variation in light all in one area casts varying shadows to the passers by below.

3) The light caused by the reflections of different density and areas of the snow to me, feels like an overwhelming wave of tranquility. As I passed the light, I felt all of the different waves in their intensity, as some gracefully lit my features, and others pulled me out into the brightness in the intense cold of winter. In my awe, I find myself looking up and seeing how the light changes from day to day as the snow melts and moves.

Photo Observation #1

  1. February 1st, 2026 – 5:20pm – Axin Library
  2. Theme – Sunrise/Sunset
  3. I took this photo from the 9th floor of the library after a long day. I was wicked tired and my friends and I were just chatting. The light was shining brightly through the top of the window and I noticed how orange the sky was. It looked so warm compared to how cold it was outside. We all ran over to the window and started taking pictures. We could see the skyline of the city from there. It gave us all a child-like sense of excitement. It was the perfect way to end the day.

Lighting Moment #1

  1. February 2nd, 2026 – 5:30pm – Estabrook dorm
  2. I was looking out of my dorm window at the library. The sun was almost set but not fully so the entire sky was a deep blue. The little bit of light left at 5:30pm felt amazing due to the 4pm sunsets we’ve had for months. The sky was clear making the library look brightly lit yet warm against the sky.
  3. The deep blue of the sky was the kind you can’t capture on camera because your phone lightens it automatically. The bright lights on the library stuck out against the clear sky creating a stark contrast between the blue and the white. Although the sight was dramatic, it felt warm and cozy instead of mysterious and dark. It created a cold, yet cozy mood by being inside while looking out at the view.

Lighting Observation #1

  1. February 4th, 1:30am, behind Business building
  2. The light coming out of the lighting fixtures along the path in front of the new medical building, it has a glow around it that creates a sort of haze.
  3. In walking from my house to my friends in the early hours of the morning, or rather the late hours of the night, the lighting fixture stood out as a sort of beacon in my path. This modern sort of street lamp marks the point where there is about one minute left in my walk. The light, with its subtle glow, gives off a beckoning energy as it creeps into the humidity surrounding it. The light seamlessly seeps into the air around it, traveling further than its plastic prison. By doing this, it seems to send the same message to passing travelers, encouraging them to press onward.

1st Lighting Observation – Mia Gozinsky

1) February 4th,2026 – 4:20pm – Hague Dorm

2) For it being the afternoon, the light was still full and bright with a beautiful glow onto the buildings and snow which was enjoyable to see.  It has been so cloudy lately that I can tell is effecting everyone especially since its also so cold outside, so seeing  that the sun wasn’t really setting just yet, it was comforting  to enjoy that view of sunlight for a bit.

3) The mood lighting was calm and relaxed because at the time none of my roomates were home yet so it was just nice to be by myself after having a rough morning which the lighting made me a  little more relaxed then before. It was just perfect, the lights in the room were off and the sun was peaking through the window, absolutely lovely and it turned my mood around instantly which was really needed after just having two difficult classes that morning.

1st Photo Observation – KS

  1. 11/25/2024, 4:41pm, Hofstra University, Taken by Katelyn Smith (Me)
  2. Theme – Sunrise/Sunset
  3. I took this photo because, when I saw this sunset descending behind the Axinn Library, I thought it was truly beautiful and I felt like I was at home. At the time I took this photo I was a first semester freshman at Hofstra and I was still adjusting. However, when I took this photo walking away from class, I had a feeling of belonging and comfort emerge inside me, and I felt the need to capture the moment. This sunset is not only a nice view, but it is one of the core views and moments that made me feel like I was meant to be at Hofstra and that I did, and do, belong.

1st Lighting Observation – KS

  1. January 3rd, 2026 – 5:12pm – The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
  2. The light is a mix of a pale yellow and white color. It is coming down onto two large candelabras from above. The light mainly shines on the top part of the candelabras from a spotlight-esc light and reflects down the candelabras leaving a shadow that mirrors the top part of the candelabras but does not leave a large shadow at the middle/bottom of the candelabras.
  3. The light focused on the candelabras gives them a majestic quality that makes your eyes drawn to the top part of the artwork. It feels heroic, like if I lifted the pieces I would unveil something like how Arthur does with Excalibur. The lighting is mesmerizing and clear and gives me the same impression of adventure and journey that the story of the Odyssey does. It feels brave and proud and a tad performative. Not showing off, but presenting a masterpiece. It catches your eye with its clear focus and keeps that focus the entire time you look in that direction.
