Surreal

37 Bizarre Lighting Solutions2) Attribute the Photo, tell us where it came from. Mason’s Creations

3) THEME: Surreal

4) DESCRIPTION: This chandelier is based off of an octopus’s tentacles. Personally, I find it bizarre to asssociate the slimy texture of an octopus and their sticky tentacles to hard and nonmoving lighting. Additionally, seeing a glowing octopus underwater would likely feel surreally magical, especially if there were multiple glowing across a large abyss of dark ocean.

Lighting Observation #9

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: April 17, 11:30 PM, My dorm

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I moved my lamp from one side of the room to the other side.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As assignments were piling up and the time I had to complete them was dwindling, I did what any other sane person would do: rearranged my furniture. As part of this stress-relieving physical labor, my warm lamp moved from the west wall to the north wall. I’m not sure why I didn’t think it would happen, but as the source of the light moved, the lighting in the room changed drastically. While the physical placement of the furniture definitely helped, the room as a whole felt much more open, and I was especially satisfied with the fact that I could finally actually see the clothes in my closet, whereas previously the opened doors would block the light trying to shine inside.

Lighting Observation #9

4/13/2022 – 7:21pm – Wilmington, DE

Objective Description: Driving along the highway in Wilmington, DE the sun is setting on the horizon against a dusty blue sky. As we drive the orange and pink sunset passes between the trees and building skylines

Subjective description: As we drive across the bridge the orange wave of light punches me in the face with warmth. As we speed by the light follows while all the trees and buildings pass by. There is harmony in the orange power between the dusty blue sky and the sea of green trees below. The sun soon faded and is left with nothing but the unknown under the sky.

Light Observation #9

  1. Wednesday, April 13th, around 7:00am. Looking out the window outside of the girl’s bathroom in Lowe.
  2. The sunrise peeking out between the Playhouse and Calkins Hall.
  3. Most of the sky was a light grey, the color before the sun actually takes over the sky. Although I couldn’t see it, I  believe the Sun was just above the horizon and the orange and pink from the Sun were peaking out above the buildings. There was some cloudage in the sky which gave the pink and orange something to shine off of and create more saturated areas of the sky.

Light Observation

DATE/TIME/LOCATION: Elevator in the Library on 4/13/22 at 8:15pm

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The doors of the elevator closed and my friend and I were in the small creaky elevator while it went down a few floors. The only light source is the fluorescent lights overhead.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The elevator felt very eerie and creaky. If I wasn’t used to the short ride down to the main floor I wouldn’t have noticed how the inside of the elevator looks archaic. As we arrive on the main floor, the lobby is quiet and dim. Most people have left by now so the lobby is quite poorly lit. The artificial glow disappears behind us as the elevator doors swallow up every bit of light. Simultaneously, the hum of the fluorescent lights nearly drops to an inaudible whisper.

Lighting Observation #9

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : April 13, 2022 at 7:22, Hofstra Athletic Fields

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The sunset reflects off of a glass building in the distance, making the building light up in shades of red, orange, and yellow.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION :  The reflection of the sunset off of the glass building mimics the creation of a second sun. The building is aglow with deep reds and oranges, making the building seem almost on fire. Against the pale blue sky the building pulls attention as a center of focus. As the day comes to the end, the sun is almost in a final swan song, lighting up in one fantastical eruption of light before it sinks below the horizon and night begins.

Four Seasons: Virtual Light Lab Project

1. A Fall Sunset in Vermont

Instruments 1-4 are hung USR using gel R32 at full with a 36 degree flood and soft focus. Instruments 3-6 are hung two positions below instruments 1-4 SR and are using gel R40 at full with a 36 degree flood and soft focus. The top cyc lights are using gel R74 at 80% and the bottom cyc lights are using gel R11 at 65%.

The lower hanging lights are representative of the direct sunlight as it is about ti set while the upper hanging lights is the brighter pinker light that fills the sky. The blue light on the cyc represents the color that slowly takes over the sky in a sunset’s last few minutes.

2. Easter Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

Instrument 1 is hanging in the upstage SR corner using gel R45 at full with a 50 degree flood and soft focus. Instrument 2 is hanging in the upstage SR corner using gel R68 at full with a 50 degree flood and soft focus. Instrument 3 is one hanging position below instruments 1 and 2 SR; it is using gel R13 at full with a 50 degree flood and soft focus. All instruments are using the “Breakup” gobo.

The gobo is giving the impression of the light coming through a stained glass window, along with the colored light that the Sun gives off when shining through the stained glass. The light is coming from SR like the Sun has just begin rising in the East.

3. Noon on a Hot Summer Day

The bottom cyc lights are using gel R75 at full. Instruments 1 and 2 are at the downstage corners using gel R313 at full with a 90 degree flood and soft focus. Instruments 3, 4, and 5, are center stage using gel 313 at full with a 50 degree flood and soft focus.

The direct overhead center stage light represents the direct overhead Sun at noon and the light that the corner instruments give off helps fill the space to give more of a hotter feeling. The blue cyc gives the illusion of the Caribbean sea.

4. Winter Afternoon Just Before the Snow

Instruments 1-6 are in every corner hanging position with gel L201 at full with a 90 degree flood and soft focus. The top and bottom cyc lights have no gel and are at full. Instrument 7 is DC using gel R67 at full with a 90 degree flood and soft focus. Instruments 8 and 10 are in the downstage and center hanging positions that split center and SL; they are using gel R67 at full with a 90 degree flood and a soft focus. Instrument 9 is in line with instruments 8 and 10 at the upstage hanging position; it is using gel R67 at full with a 50 degree flood and a soft focus.

There is a flood of white light that gives off the harsh white hue that Winter air seems to have. The flood of blue is the Sun’s Winter Light, and the more distinct blue beam shows where the Sun’s afternoon light is directly coming from.

Alice McKay – photos

Easter in a Gothic Cathedral:

My goal with this image was to resemble stained glass. Growing up in the catholic church I have vivid memories of the blues and purples from the sun shining down. I chose to do the yellow spot on the man in the middle as a resemblance of both the sun coming in from the glass, but the spotlight that is often on the crucifix above the alter. I used the dot and breakup gobos to show the textures of the stained glass with orange, teal, and purple lighting.

Noon in the Caribbean:

When I think of the Caribbean I think about the lovely teal water and the stark bright light of the sun. From all of the images I found there were little shadows as it seems the sunshine comes from everywhere reflecting off the water and sand. I didn’t use any gobos, but instead focused on making sure the sun was coming from all around with the bottom cycs mimicing the reflections of the teal water.

Winter Afternoon:

Winter afternoons are often spent indoors with the cool lighting from the snow coming in. I used the window gobo to emulate sitting by the window looking out to the snow, with deep blue lighting coming around.

Sunset in Vermont:

I chose to do a later sunset in Vermont focusing on the deep purples and pinks of the sun. I chose to use blue in the top cycs to show the leftover blue sky, and tried to make a gradient into the orange of the sun.

Four Seasons Light Lab

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont

For my Fall Sunset in Vermont, I looked at reference photos and saw a variety of different forms of light. I decided to achieve this look, I wanted to backlight my figure with a gradient of shades from magenta to amber. I made these beams wide to make the effect less harsh. I thought that the overall vibe was too warm because I saw some cool blues and purples in my reference photo, so I made the cyc lights blue and purple and added a couple of blue and purple sidelights with gobos for texture. I added one warm amber light downstage left to act as my sun that was setting. This image depicts the moment because it uses a variety of warm magenta and amber gels to depict sunbeams and cool purple and blue gels to depict the different shades present in the sky.
2) Easter sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

For my Easter Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral, I took inspiration from the church I used to sing at and tried to emulate the lighting from there. On Easter morning, everything would be very colorful and bright, and though the church was normally very warm, the light shining in through the windows made everything very cool-toned. To achieve this look, I decided I wanted to give the effect of a stained-glass window by placing 3 lights of different colors (light blue, cool white, and warm white) next to each other with gobos. I wanted to incorporate more Easter colors, so I added pink and purple to the cyc lights. Finally, I added some soft-focus beams to make the overall effect a little brighter. This image matches the moment because it uses Easter colors and gobos to look like a stained-glass window in a church.
3) Noon on a hot Summer day in the Caribbean

For my Noon on a hot Summer day in the Carribean, I wanted the lights to be brightest directly overhead. I also wanted them to be very warm. To act as a symbol for the ocean in the background, I made the bottom cyc lights blue, and I made the top cyc lights golden amber. The lights shining down from overhead are warm whites interspersed with a couple of golden ambers to increase the overall warmth of the design. I think it also gives the effect of sand before the ocean. This image matches the moment because it uses warm tones overhead to look like a bright noon sun and sand on the ground, and the cyc lights look like the ocean and bright sky in the background.
4) Winter afternoon just before the snow

For my Winter afternoon just before the snow, I wanted to keep the overall effect very dark and hazy, giving the impression that clouds have rolled in and the sky is about to open. I lowered the ambient lighting and added haze. I also wanted it to be very cool-toned, so I used mostly cool whites and a couple of blue gels. I added gobos to the lights placed downstage left to give the effect of flurries falling before a blizzard. I wanted most of the lights to be coming not from directly overhead, because it’s in the afternoon, but I still added one cool white light directly overhead for that distinct pre-snow glow. This image matches the moment because it’s dark and hazy, almost suspenseful, and uses cool gels and a couple of gobos to give a pre-snow effect.

4 Seasons Lighting

Gels Used: R013 (straw tint), R052 (light lavender), R021 (golden amber), and R043 (deep pink) shining on the person. R358 (rose indigo) for the purple wash on the sides and the bottom cyc. R023 (orange) for leaves on the side. R348 (purple jazz) for the top cyc.

Gobos Used: Breakup gobo on the side leaves.

Description: I wanted to create a gradient on the person like the gradient of a setting sun so I used the brightest lights/colors on the center of the person and faded outwards color wise and intensity wise like a setting sun. I used the breakup gobo to create a leaf pattern on the wall like falling leaves and used a purple background one, because I thought it provided a cool contrast to the leaves, and two because it was also the furthermost color in the setting sun.

Gels Used: R078 (trudy blue) for front light. R007 (pale yellow) for side wash. R369 (tahitian blue) for side wash, top and bottom cyc, and center stained glass. R047 (light rose purple) for side wash. R347 (belladonna rose) for SR glass. R010 (medium yellow) for SL glass.

Gobos Used: Window gobo used for the three stained glass.

Description: I used the window gobos to create the effect of stained glass shining down from multiple angles in the colors generally associated with easter. I created a gradient of color along each wall in easter colors one, to further the idea of stained glass as I feel that is a defining feature of gothic churches, and two, because it brought brightness and color which I feel works for the easter part of the prompt and the sunrise part. I used a blue for the front light as the washes made the person look a little yellow so I used the blue to cancel that out.

Gels Used: R061 (mist blue) at full for the top lights, at 75% for the side lights on the person. R369 (tahitian blue) for highlighting the water in the circle and as the bottom cyc. R069 (brilliant blue) for the rest of the water wash. R010 (medium yellow) for top cyc.

Gobos Used: Dots gobo for all the water on the bottom.

Description: I used the majority of the lights to create a water effect on the lower portion of the stage surrounding the person and then brightened up the color to add on another layer in the center circle. I then used bright yellows on the person in carrying intensities as to show the beating sun on the person but not alter the look of the water.

Gels Used: R366 (Jordan blue) for front light, mid SR and SL wash, and back light and top and bottom cyc. R361 (Hemsley blue) for SR person light and USR and USL wash. R055 (lilac) for SL person light and DSR and DSL wash.

Gobos Used: None.

Description: I wanted to give the idea of white light hitting the person and the walls without having to be void of color as I feel winter is full of some more muted colors so I hit everything with a trio of colors (all kind of muted primaries) that all worked to cancel each other out and create white where the lights hit but colors where they shone to give the effect of both color and white. I also made sure not to use gobos as I wanted the look to seem very simple and clean.
