Lighting Journal 2 Eve Alas

  1. DATE: 02/13/22
  2. TIME: 3:00 pm
  3. LOCATION: Color Room at the Museum of Illusions, Manhattan, NY
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION:  This time I picked an inside location because I wanted to see how light is different from the inside than from an outside place and natural light if that makes sense. I went to the Museum of Illusions this past weekend and entered the color room. There were different types of light with different colors. As a dancer, it made me realize which colors look good on people and even myself and which do not since color and light reflects differently on the skin. Therefore, I really liked the experience because it was so much more different that having something natural.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I had set a goal for myself as soon as I saw the color room that was to look how different colors reflect in a different way on different types of skin. My boyfriend has really light skin and there was one point where the color of the light was yellow and it looked terrible. His skin look even lighter and the eyes and features of the face could barely be seen. On the other hand, in my case because I am a little darker blue for some reason did not work too well and green did not look good on either of us. One combination of color I really liked that they had was blue, purple, and pink because I was still able to see the face, hair, and other important features. Overall, it was a very nice experience and gave me other ideas and ways to use light on stage when making another piece in the future.

Photo Journal 2 Eve Alas

  1. DATE: 02/12/22
  2. TIME: 9:30 am
  3. LOCATION: at my boyfriend’s house
  4. THEME: First Valentine’s Day Roses
  5. DESCRIPTION: I did not want to share this picture because I thought it was too cheesy but these flowers made my Valentine’s Day the best ever because they are the first ones I receive that are not from my brothers or dad. I like to think of myself as a very simple girl. I do not ask for expensive stuffs or dinners I just like small and simple details when it comes to love. This is the first Valentine’s Day I celebrate and these roses and their beautiful colors represent so much more than just love but also commitment and how grateful we are for each other. The way of how the light highlighted the violet is simple but beautiful to look at.

Lighting Moment #1

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION:Friday, February 11th in my Dorm

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I had the overhead lights turned off, instead I had pink led lights lining the underside of my bed. When looking up at the ceiling there is an eerie glow around.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This pink glow completely envelops the surroundings but the source is hidden from the viewers eyes so it has a semi horror feel.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Friday, February 4, 2022; 9:15 PM; Netherlands North Back Gate

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sky was pitch black, but the street lights cast yellow beams through the slots of the turnstile, projecting out towards the dorms and shining in the thick fog.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The subtle but stark contrast between the sparkling, bright white beams in the fog and the gloomy and empty veil cast over the sky created an eerie, haunting, almost ghostly mood. The haze was blinding, hiding the details of the deserted surroundings, silent with sleep. No clouds walked the skies, but the soft glow of the moon in the distance created a gradient in the background. The air was full of anticipation, on edge waiting for the next sudden scream or yell of excitement.

Light Observation

  1. DATE: February 9, 2022
  2. TIME: 10:22 pm
  3. LOCATION: My bedroom
  4. Objective Observation: My friends all sitting in a circle on my rug looking individually at their phone screens with the scrolling images lighting up their faces in the dark room.
  5. Subjective Observation: The would be pitch black room illuminated with the changing screens as all the people around me play their games and read their feeds. Their faces floating in the darkness with faint shadows of shelves and desks behind them. The illusion of glowing eyes creating a stark reality of what it is to live in a world of technology. The haze of whites and blues striking their faces made for both an eerie and a comedic lighting throughout the room going unnoticed by the participants.

Lighting Moment

Date: 2/10/22

Time: 1:45pm

Location: The grass/lawn in front of Lowe and the Playhouse

Objective Description: The warm sun rays peak over the trees across the parking lot. The sun also illuminates the snow leftover from the remains of our latest nor easter. The brightness creates a shadow over the steps of the playhouse. The air is crisp and the sun feels refreshing.

Subjective Description: The warm glow of the sun is welcoming and embraces those who stand in its path. The light bouncing off the snow creates an illusion that it’s brighter outside then it actually is. This creates a feeling of hopefulness and an uncommon break from the chaos then normally fills our days, as college students.

Light Observation

Date: 2/10/22

Time: 10:00pm

Location: Parking lot behind Breslin

Objective Description: The moon shining through a small hole in the quickly moving cloud coverage. The entire sky was cloudy but there was a small hole that showed the moon.

Subjective Description: Little light was coming through the dark gray cloud coverage. There was a faint glow of the moon behind the clouds that gave the impression of its location but was otherwise lost. The clouds were quickly moving yet remaining a covered canopy-like sheet. All of a sudden, a hole opened in the clouds and the moon shone through like spilling white paint on coal. It was only for a moment as the clouds quickly closed again but while it was out, the sky brightened to a silvery gleam.

Light Observation

  1. DATE: 02/11/2022
  2. TIME: 12:35 pm
  3. LOCATION: The parking lot behind the Netherlands
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The light posts that light up the back parking lot at night illuminate the dumpsters with a dim yellow light. There is a slight mist in the air which allows you to see the beams of light coming down from the light posts.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The lights coming down on top of the trash cans gives an earie, almost creepy ambiance. The inability to see all the way down the road creates a sense of not knowing or unknown, which in turn adds to the eeriness of the light. The lights almost seem like spotlights, shining down on the dumpsters as if they where on a stage during a solo performance.

Light Observation

DATE – TIME – LOCATION : February 10, 2022 at 10:57 pm , My bedroom

OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : A string of small yellow lights ornament a silver tree on top of my dresser. It is the only source of light in the room.

SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION : The soft glow created by the string of lights produces an intimate atmosphere. As the lights reflect off of the ornament tree, an illusion of more lights is created, and the shadows of the branches cover the wall in twisting lines. This haze of yellow light creates an aura of calmness as a long day comes to an end. I am able to relax in a rare moment of stillness before going to sleep for the night.
