Photo Observation 9

2) Theme: Surreal

3) When using the theme “Surreal” I chose this photograph since the lighting seemed slightly bizarre. On the surface the lighting looks normal until you start to question where the cooler light is coming from as well as the overall action of the piece. I used a daylight colored like to recreate the sunlight coming through the window and used a CTB gelled light to replicate the mysterious blue light. I then used 4300k colored lights for the seamstress’ practical lamp.

Lighting Observation #10

  1. April 16th, sometime after 11:30PM
  2. My computer screen casting light onto my hands.
  3. The odd blue light emanated from the screen in a subtle and yet all too noticeable way, clashing with the tones of my skin. It added a sheen of light, not warmth, to my hands. Noting the time, I switched on “Night Shift,” which cast a warmer, more orange-toned glow onto my skin instead. This was less visible to the eye, but it felt less harsh too.

Photo Observation #9

  1. Theme: Surreal
  2. Pinterest
  3. I felt this photo was very abstract and surreal, with the illuminated head surrounded by disjointed hands. The lighting from below especially created this intriguing image that felt strangely peaceful yet wrong. To recreate this image, I started by using a front shin-buster light on the left side directed at the person at a 10 degree angle using the Deep Straw (R15) gel at full. Because of how intense this spotlight was, I felt there needed to be a fringe around it to create the lighting that spills out onto the hands, so I then added from the same spot another light, this time using the Gold Tint (L151) gel at a 26 degree angle on 50%. This way, it didn’t add a lot of light to the background of the stage, which isn’t in the picture, but it softened the spotlight and allowed the same intensity of light that I wanted with a more subtle blend into the background.

Photo Observation #9

Screenshot

Theme: Surreal

Photo: Found on Pinterest

Description: This image felt very surreal because it looks like someone is sitting in a chair casting the shadow but the photo had the chair empty. To recreate this image I used two different front lights. One in the second to lowest middle side light at full L201 at 26 degrees and the second was just above it at full R21 at 90 degrees.

Photo Observation #9

1. April 16, 2025

2. Photo from Pinterest

3. Theme: Surreal

4. I chose this picture, mainly because of the backdrop/set, the highway leading up into the ceiling of the stage, looking endless, the way that a long endless highway feels. I used three lights when recreating the photo, one directly above the subject , one from the front, and two from either side, front. All lights use R371 gel, to recreate the lighting in the picture.

Photo Observation #9

  1. Picture online from
  2. Theme: Surreal
  3. When I think of surreal I think of images that could be real, or maybe they are real but look so bizarre. Images that look fake. This picture is called the door of dreams and I enjoy it because it looks like someone entering the gates of heaven. To recreate it I made sure to add bright lights put at an angle to make a round entrance. I enhanced the white to 100 and made the yellow and orange to 75. This gives a feeling of blinding. For the lights on the side I used RO67 Light Sky Blue. I had to make sure to angle them so that the most bright part is hitting the wall not the floor. The orange is RO15 deep straw. The yellow is RO61 mist blue. The white is R364 Blue Ball.

Photo Observation #9

1)A picture I found on google

2)Theme: Surreal

3)When I think of surreal I think of otherworldly, bizarre, and I think this photo completely captures that. I mean you don’t exactly walk down the street and see a ‘mans’ body made of wires with a tv for a head. When I went searching for a photo to use for this weeks post, both through my own camera roll and online, this one jumped out at me the most both because of the weird nature of the photo and the lighting. The ‘man’ is utterly highlighted by light making him stand out in the picture. In the light lab I used:

A  stage right front middle side light, 50 degrees @ full, R398

A stage right bottom front light, 50 degrees @ full, R398 &

A stage left middle side light, 50 degrees @ full, R398

Photo Observation #9

  1. Photo found on unsplash
  2. Theme: Surreal
  3. This photo caught my eye because of the perspective of the image. The small person versus the vast ocean and sand. I Also liked how the colors were darker, like the people were walking the beach during a day that could pour rain. I was not able to create the sharp divide between the sand and the water, so I focused on where the bright and dark spots were instead. I used a front top light (full, 50 degrees) with the gel color “Full CT Blue” I also used a back top light that’s angled towards the person, with the gel color “No Color Blue”. Finally I used top and bottom cyc lights to mimic the colors of the water – the bottom cyc colors was an azure blue (more blue than green) while the top cyc lights were a deeper teal blue.
