Photo Observation #4

Taken by me on Tuesday in Times Square

Theme: Nightlife

Description: The bright lights against the dark night really show off the nightlife in New York City. The bright lights from all of the billboards create a feeling of excitement and even draw you into the location. This picture fits the theme since it shows off what people could do in New York City during the night.

Night Life

Attribute: This photo taken at a thermal bath in Budapest, Hungary at night.

Theme: This relates to the theme night life because the photo was taken at night in fun atmosphere most people would associate with “night life”.

Description: The heat of the bath against the frigid air created a foggy back drop for the the whimsical, ever color-changing lights to engulf the space.

Light Observation #3

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Wednesday 13th 2019, 8:00 pm

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was out with my friend Lauren for Galentines day and we celebrated with a wonderful dinner at Oilo e piu. It is a wonderfully, dim lit, Italian restaurant.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This moment was quite beautiful and the dim lighting with string lights gave it such a romantic feel. I don’t know if that was the wine talking but it looked wonderful.

Light Observation 3

Wednesday, February 13, 2019 – Outside of Vander Poel Hall
The sun had just started to set, creating a periwinkle color in the sky. The trees were striking against this backdrop, appearing almost black in comparison. The lamppost lights had started to turn on, with one having an almost subdued neon green hue to it. Each of the main elements within what I saw seemed like the opening shot of a tragedy or horror work. Despite the fact that the colors I saw weren’t the typical dark and/or bloody lighting that is often seen within the genre, it had a ominous nature about it. The darkness of the tree seemed like a shadow that didn’t belong, almost making the whole scene appear as though it had been filtered the wrong way. However, the lamppost made you realize that the color scheme is correct, as it glowed in a eerie, underground hidden tunnel, torches along the wall, kind of way.

Photo Observation 3

A photo of the shore, taken by me in January 2017
THEME: Cold
This photo was taken at night, so the light was fading out for the day. However, there was still enough light present to help illuminate the water and mist, but not enough to really give it a sharp or clear light source. Everything has a blue tone to it, as a result of the light that is present, which might not seem overtly obvious at first, but once you look closer, you’ll realize. Looking at how empty the beach is, really helps to emulate one of the words I most associate with cold: barren, because you often won’t see any life around when it gets too cold.

Light Observation #3: 5:30pm Outside the office in Manhattan

  1. The sun was setting in which someone in the office brought it to my attention.
  2. There was a strong ombre effect with the colors because it went from black to a deep red-orange. These tones gave it a warm effect even though we know it was 5:30 and it was going to be night soon. But, Since the sun was setting you were able to notice how the colors in the sky changed as it went completely black.

Photo Observation #3: Source, Photographer Kolin Mendez

Theme: Cold

Description: This is a performance that I had at The Paper Box in Brooklyn. The dark Blue lights on the outer part of the photo makes you focus on the middle where the shades of Red and Blue mixed together. Then the contrast of the black as well makes you focus on the beautiful colors that surround the performers face causing it to feel cold but also adds a little life to it.

Photo Observation 3

I took this photo on my iPhone 7 on 2/14/19 at Concordia College in Bronxville

Theme: Cold

Description: This photo was taken at Concordia college as the time was nearing 11:00 PM. After the recent snowfall, much of what remained ended up turning into ice which made walking across this quad quite the interesting (and comical) task. What is intriguing about this photo is that the sense of “cold” comes less from the presence of the ice (although it certainly helped) and more from the white light emanating from the side of the building. This light reflects off the ice and makes it more prominent as the viewers eyes are drawn straight down the field. This entire display can almost give one the impression that they are walking down this path towards the white light. This light does not offer warmth, but rather it offers quite a chill as it makes the ice in the center resemble a small body of water that is pulling me in. Walking down this path, seeing the white light reflecting off of the ice, the dismal feeling in the air as well as the ever present foreboding nature of this white light overseeing it all filled me with a sense of urgency. This display brought to mind no other thought other than I wanted to get out of this cold air and into the warmth of the building before me. Perhaps this was the purpose of that white light all along.

Light Observation 3

Date/Time/Location- 2/13/19, Roughly 9:00 P.M., Time Square

Objective Description- Due to a work related venture, I was led to drive into Manhattan on my way to a youth gathering. On the way, I decided to pass through Time Square. The bright and colorful lights on the buildings as well as the traffic lights and headlights on the cars appeared to brighten up the night.

Subjective Description- As the city streets stretched out before me, I couldn’t help but notice the contrast between the dark and dismal night sky above me and the bright and vibrant lights that populated everything right in front of me. Everything appeared to move so fast, from the brake lights and head lights on the cars that zoomed past me to the enormous signs on the buildings that appeared to be in constant motion as their colors changed and their lights flickered. The constant and even erratic movement of the lights awakened my senses and left me feeling energized and jovial. This moment showed me that light isn’t just good for illuminating a room, it can be great for visually crafting another world within our own and it allows one’s imagination to take a wild ride down the rabbit hole. This scene gave me the feeling that there was a world of night time wonder among the stars above me, and an ever-growing and ever-moving world of light surrounding me as I drove through the manhattan streets.
