Photo Observation #3

  1. December 14, 2025 2:35 PM, Hofstra University, NY
  2. Cold
  3. This is the picture I choose for this assignment, despite being told snow doesn’t equal cold. The flat level of the snow under my friend and the contrast between her black jacket amongst all the white, gray, and even pale pink of her scarf emphasizes the cold tone of the image. I like that she is basically against a white drop background and there is nothing in the snow other than herself. There are also warm colors in the image, he pink scarf even having cool undertones.

Photo Observation #3

  1. 2/24/26- picture of the movie The Rip
  2. Theme – cold
  3. this is a picture I took from the movie The Rip. I like the way the light comes through the car windows highlights the actors and creates a haze around them. It feels ominous and scary as it is not enough to light up the car.  The blue adds to the ominous vibes as it doesn’t warm up the scene, instead adding to the tenseness of the scene.

3rd Photo Observation- Cold

1) February 23rd, 2026 at 6:22 pm outside of Alliance Hall

2) Theme- Cold

3) I was contemplating whether to go outside or not since there would most likely be snow on the ground. As I was waking outside  to get food, I saw in the corner a little tree with snow on it. But what really caught my eye was the light shining directly on it. The use of this bright white made it look a lot more colder than it actually was.

4th Lighting Observation – KS

  1. 02/25/2026 – 5:27pm – Outside the Bill of Rights residential tower at Hofstra University
  2. The light I am talking about is the light that was shining against the Bill of Rights residential tower as the sun was beginning to set. It was white-ish light and shone mainly on half of one side of the building.
  3. The light that was shining against the Bill of Rights tower looked like someone had opened a curtain into a bright room just a crack so that only a bit of light would shine through. It embodied the feeling of both ending and beginning at the same time with the end of the day and the beginning of the night.

3rd Photo Theme: Cold – Mia Gozinsky

  1. February 22nd, 2026 – 8:42 Pm – Netherlands North Side
  2. Theme – Cold
  3. This was captured on my walk to the RA office (which I did a lot of back and forths to check if my replacement key was ready) during the “calm before the storm” that ended up closing school on Monday. Besides the fact that it was indeed VERY COLD OUTSIDE, the way the lighting captures the snow, making it “look” like it’s coming down peacefully, makes the photo very pleasant to look at (but not for the person taking the photo in real time).

Lighting observation #3

February 24 2026 – afternoon – My dorm

Objective: Sunlight enters my bedroom through the partially closed blinds. It hits the wall and creates a pattern. Dust particles are floating through the light (My room is clean btw 🙂

Subjective: The light feels calm and nostalgic. The golden lines of light is a reminder that the day is eventually coming to an end. It also gave a lonely kind of mood.

4th Lighting Observation

  1. February 24th, 2026 – 7:53 pm – Cherry Lane Kitchen
  2. We recently had a few lightbulbs go out in our kitchen, so naturally we bought new lightbulbs to replace the burnt out ones. The lightbulbs we ended up buying and installing were warm-toned, whereas the ones we had were cool-toned. Before we realized that the tones clashed, there was a moment of both warm and cool tones being on at the same time.
  3. Both the warm and cool tones being in close proximity was actually a cool effect. The cool-toned light was on the right, and the warm-toned light was on the left. The wall directly between both lights was a more neutral hue, but the further away you got from the centerpoint the more the wall would take on a different tone (so the further right you went the cooler it looked, and to the right it was warm). This was a great everyday example of color mixing/theory.

3rd Photo Observation

  1. March 18, 2025 – 2:33 pm – Nauset Lighthouse
  2. Theme – Cold
  3. I took this photo during my trip to Cape Cod for Spring Break last year. Not only was it pretty cold outside, but the lighting in this photo appears very cool toned. It was very cloudy, so the daylight reflects a grey and almost green cast over everything. The bright red stripe on the lighthouse provides a nice contrast to the muted grey and green in the rest of the surrounding things.

Lighting Moment #3

  1. January 21, 2026 – At a crosswalk in the middle of Times Square
  2. It was cloudy weather, the bright kind of cloudy, and the lights on all the billboards were super bright and reflective because of the clouds. It lit up the square as much as it does at night. There were lots of reds and bold colors.
  3. I normally notice the Times Square billboards mainly at night because it is the main thing lighting the streets up. Your eyes automatically get drawn up to the billboards. The more light there is, the less I see the billboards. Today however, I really noticed the billboards even in the middle of the day and somehow it was more powerful. They blended in with everything else a bit better instead of blinding you, but they also were so bright and colorful and pretty, it just made me feel happy and excited to be there.

Photo Observation #3

  1. October, 2023
  2. Theme – cold
  3. The first thing I thought of when I heard the theme was “cold” was this movie. The Holdovers was a movie filmed that had a few scenes filmed in my high school in 2023. The movie takes place in the winter but even the shots that take place inside feel cold. Usually in movies the indoor scenes are filmed with warm, cozy lighting, but this one wasn’t. It was purposefully cold the entire time no matter where the characters were. In this scene if they had turned the lights in the entire mood of the scene would have changed. Those lights are very yellow and warm. The choice to keep them off was intentional, and important. It kept the colors to mainly brown and gray. Very depressing and cold.
