Lighting Observation #9

April 11, 2025 – Lawrence Herbert School of Communications, random control room

2) The lights of the computer screens

3) I was walking past this particular control room and most of the cameras connected to the computers were off so a majority of pictures on the screen read “Hofstra University” and show the multi colored “no signal” screen. The lights in the room are low in the room, so all of the screens are clear and bright, and although the colors from the screen didn’t cast onto the table, there was a hint of blue, from what I am assuming is the blue light of the screen. There was one person in the control room and the colors of the screen, yellow, teal, green, magenta, red, purple, black, and white, was softly bouncing off of their skin.

Lighting Observation #9

  1. April 11th, 11:12pm – my bedroom
  2. The LED strip in my bedroom is the color blue
  3.  The LED light shines a blue that makes me feel calm and serene. The strip of dots create a haze on my wall and my whole room is washed with the color of the ocean. The colors of the art on my wall shift when the light is on, the pigment reflects the new wavelength this color emits.

Lighting Observation #9

  1. 4/11/25, 8:18 pm, my living room.
  2. The light from the kitchen shining onto my living room wall.
  3. The light from the kitchens falls out onto the dark walls of my living room. It cascades over the pictures and drawings taped haphazardly on the wall onto one of my housemates drawings. On top of black paper, bright colors create an obscure shape. The light falls on the bright colors, emphasizing them. Around the painting, the shadows fall, pulling long the shadows the furniture. As the light shines from the kitchen, the doorway pulls me towards it, enticing me. The light pulls me towards it, out of the darkness.

Lighting Observation #9

04/11/25 my bedroom

The light coming in through my window from the streetlight outside

It’s late on a rainy friday night. The town still buzzes outside but I’ve checked out for the day. There’s a street light not too far from my bedroom window. When it’s dark enough outside, the light shines into my bedroom in beams, through my broken window blinds. Jagged and uneven, but I still think its beautiful.

Lighting Observation #9

1.) April 5th, 2025 – 7:32pm – a restaurant in West Village

2.) The many intricate and different light fixtures along the wall of this restaurant.

3.) As I stepped through the narrow door of the restaurant, the icy sting of the air outside was washed away by a wave of warmth. The building was obviously warmer than outside, but it was the brilliant wall of lights that really created the ambiance within the room. There was no overhead lighting, just a collage of intricate fixtures that looked as if they had been collected over many years. All of them were glowing in a similar warm tone, making the inside of the restaurant feel like a warm hug. The dim lighting made the space feel even smaller, furthering the cozy environment being underscored by the live piano. Looking out the window at the cold, dull light, I never wanted to leave comfortable haven I was in.

Lighting Observation #9

  1. April 9th, 4:10pm, south campus
  2. The sun shining on a patch of daffodils
  3. The sun wasn’t yet low in the sky, causing it to hit the white daffodils from a fairly high angle. The bright yellow light cast itself onto the delicate yellow petals, illuminating their color and showing it off in its brightest state. The green stems were also enhanced greatly by the intensity of the sun, the color seemingly emphasized by the warmth. For a flower already so vibrantly colored, the rich sunlight made it pop even more.

Photo Observation #8

  1. EOS Family Augment3d Light Lab
  2. Advertisement recreation in Light Lab.
  3. I used one more light than I thought I would to create this look. I did use the white side light but I ended up adding one more light coming from the same side of the stage angled down on the subject to add a bit of brightness as the sidelight seemed too dark on its own. I also used the cyc to emulate the red background.

  1. Light Lab
  2. Advertisement recreation in light lab
  3. For this light lab, I started with two lights at full on the second to the lowest point on the tree hung at 50 degrees on both sides. The lights are very concentrated on the burgers and this degree and brightness best represented that. I used the Deep Straw gel (R15), mostly because the colors photoshopped around the burger are a similar undertone. Then, because there is that shadow underneath the burgers, signifying a top light, I put one more light in the very middle directly above them. I put this one at 75% so it wasn’t as intense and placed it at a 90 degree angle with a soft focus. Since the top light was less of a prominent aspect of the lighting, I wanted to utilize it to light the picture without having too much of an impact on the overall appearance of the lighting. For this light, I used no gel.
