Lighting Observation #10

1) April 16th 4:00pm (Inside a car tunnel Brooklyn)

2) I had got picked up to go to Brooklyn with my aunt for a couple hours. But as we were driving, we went through one of the tunnels. But it was kind of a long tunnel and it had a bunch of lights to guide the way. I rolled down the window to let in a little bit of air as I found myself drawn to the lights. They were a nice shade of orange, creating a beautiful orange line as the car moved.

3) I genuinely entered flow state when I was in there. It reminded me of when you see those scenes in movies where there is racing car going through the tunnel. It represents the freedom that the characters have in the moment. I was pretty stressed out in the moment so being able to be in an environment of such peace was truly relaxing.

10th Lighting Observation – Mia Gozinsky

  1. April 16th, 2026 – 7:20 Pm – Leaving Writing Comp
  2. The light was peaceful, warm, and soothing as it reflected onto the trees as I was walking to Emily Lowe, which made it feel more like summer than spring cause usually the sun is out longer in the summer than in the spring, which gave me hope that maybe the nice weather would last a little longer.
  3. The sun was still out, which I was very shocked about cause I wasn’t expecting it to still be out at that time until I found out that it won’t be setting until 7:35, which was nice to see cause it’s giving me a lot of hope that the weather will stay nice like this for a while.

Lighting Observation 10

  1. April 13th – 2:30pm – Braxton Street
  2. Small Green light on the corner of an electrical box on a telephone pole
  3. This light while a bright and pleasing color contrasts with its purpose. This light indicates danger which is rare for the color of green, it means this electrical box is on and contact with it would therefore cause serious harm. However, the common knowledge for green’s typical message is one associated with the concept of “Go”, or any indication of acceptance, welcoming for that matter. It was fascinating to me to see this sharp color of green strangely indicating a warning of danger to people passing by. Especially in the way that the light cuts through the world even in the brightness of midday sunlight.

Photo Observation 9

  1. April 15th – 11:08pm
  2. Theme – Surreal
  3. This photo has a peculiar energy to it. This is taken from the Whitney museum of American Art from their Sixties surreal exhibit. I think the word surreal well describes this photo as the movement and positions by of the camels along with their extreme detail creates an odd feeling. The lighting however brings the most uniqueness to it. The orange setting over the details of these animals creates a realistic feeling from maybe a desert, but paired its totality and flatness making a blanket over the whole exhibit, it leaves the photo more surreal instead.

Photo Observation – Surreal

theme: surreal

I found this photo on google and I just really liked it. I like how you can see the three different colors from each spot combine to make a white light. The one pole being lit up surrounded by just an empty street feels kind of eerie. I was able to move the positions of the walls and lights to get them closer to where they are in the original image.

Photo Observation #9

  1. November 15, 2025 – Pop up PopMart Store NYC
  2. Theme — Surreal
  3.  I chose this picture due to how the light of the podium is hitting her face and turning her completely blue and purple. The brightness of the podium pulls the focus of the viewer. There are also LED lights on the border of the back wall. Just the sheer amount of blue lighting is what made me pick this image for Surreal.

Photo Observation #9

1) April 16th, 2024 – American Dream Mall, New Jersey

2) Theme: Surreal

3) I chose this photo for surreal due to how bright and unnatural the light was, and how it was fabricated so delicately and purposefully for the location we were in. The red light is so unnaturally vibrant and comes from above, as the people are looking up towards a intense beam of light. I believe there is some blue light as well to create slight additive color mixing, as we can see that one of the people’s shirt is purple towards the top.

Photo Observation #9

October 19th 2025 6:20 pm at Darkness Rising haunted house

Surreal

This is an animatronic statue from the haunted house I worked with last October, He stood in the waiting area and played recorded lines. About where the red light is in this image is a motion sensor that causes him to move down to scare people when they approach.

I had a hard time with maneuvering the light upwards and had to figure out how to change the tilt of the light along the center left position at the floor (I couldn’t figure out if there were footlights in here) but I think it got it pretty close. I then added overhead light from all four directions to make sure the model was fully visible. I played around with the ambient light but I was unsure about the way it drowned out the red.

Photo Observation #9

Theme — Surreal

This is a photo inside a cave in the Azores. The abundance of plants outside turned the light shining in to a very green silhouette. I played around a lot with the greens and whites in order to get the lighting correct. I didn’t end up using a lot of hanging lights, but I played around with the cyc a lot and almost every cyc light had a different color.

The hardest part about this was the texture. I added a gobo to the lights but that only broke up the bottom while I wanted to break up the wall.

Photo Observation- Surreal

I think that the hardest part of this was trying to get the color to exactly what I want it to look in the photo. Ignoring that the picture is flipped compared to Zendayas picture, I wanted to still be able to capture that dream like state that the picture gives.
