Photo Observation #9

Theme: Surreal

This is a photo in the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, Spain. It feels surreal due to the way the lighting is being scattered toward the camera by the stained glass window that is nearly hidden by the arch.

In light lab I turned off the work lights then used light 6 & 7 to add back in the ambiance lighting of the space. I also turned down the beam intensity to hide the beams more. The lights 1-5 are hung at various positions along the center pipe to create the pooling/angled spread on the ground.

9th Photo Theme: Surreal – Mia Gozinsky

  1. April 15th, 2026 – 4:44 Pm – Photo
  2. Theme: Surreal
  3. Thought that this photo really captured all the aspects of Surreal cause it’s impossible for this to happen in real life, but it was quite breathtaking to look at, and it was really nice how the light reflects all those individual shadows onto the water.

10th Lighting Observation

  1. April 11th, 2026 – 12:31 am – Broadfield Basement
  2. I got a photo of myself and some friends at a birthday party over the weekend. The lighting of the camera paired with the darkness of the basement and all the colorful lights made it look really cool. There was a yellow light behind the camera that ended up making us all look green, but the lights behind us also make us more in silhouette than visible.
  3. The primary light source was the flash of the camera, which is pretty head on. The green hue from the lights behind the photographer acts as a sort of fill light and gives us all a green tint. The lights directly behind us are a warm yellow and are very bright. There’s a slight angled purple light from the side as well that adds some variety and another pop of color to the cool green and yellows already on us.

9th Photo Observation

  1. August 17th, 2021 – 9:34 pm – Friend’s House
  2. Theme – Surreal
  3. In high school I was having a sleepover at my friends house. She let her dog into the room and she came to sit with us. I gave her a hug and my friend took this photo. The lighting from all the different sources (her two galaxy lamps and the glare from the TV) made it kind of look like a dream state and made me think of this theme.

9th Photo Observation – Surreal – KS:

  1. Screenshot of the Artemis II Landing, Friday April 10th at around 7:45pm
  2. SURREAL. Include an Angle Color/Lighting Key diagram and a screen capture of the lighting represented in the virtual light lab
  3. This photo is a screenshot from the live broadcast of the Artemis II spacecraft’s return to Earth. I find this photo to be surreal because, from this angle, it looks like the fuel from the spacecraft has cut the moon in half. It looks too geometric and clean-cut to feel real. It looks almost painted too.

10th Lighting Observation – KS:

  1. 04/14/2026 – 10:49am – Davison Hall
  2. The light I am talking about it coming from a reflection. It is light that is bouncing off the metal siding of a chair in my classroom. It looks like a streak of white light on the greyish-silver color of the mental on the chair.
  3. The light gives off a sleek and manufactured feeling. Against the reddish-brown color of the chair, the white light on the silver contrasts each other a lot. When I look at it, I think get the immediate thought of “clean” and “strong” and manufactured.”

Lighting Moment #10

  1. April 12th, 6:32pm — walking back to my dorm
  2. In between the front of my dorm and another dorm there is a patch of grass and plants that are normally all green but recently yellow flowers have started to boom there. It is on a slight hill so the other night when i was walking back to my dorm the sky was cloudy but it was also getting dark so the sky looked a deep dark blue, almost purple. This turned the grass a very deep green and the yellow flowers were so bright they seemed to light up making them stand out against everything.
  3. Like most lighting moments, i noticed this not just because of the flowers, but because the lighting reminded me of something. This time it was one specific night at summer camp a few years ago when it was late evening and we all ran back to our cabins because a storm was coming. This dark blue had the same feeling that could be eerie but the bright flowers made it feel exciting and fresh instead.

Lighting Observation #9

1) April 10th at 9:50 am (Heger Hall)

2) I went to get some work done at Heger Hall because it is nice and comfortable where the couches are. Compared to when you step inside of the building, the section where I was sitting was pretty dark since all of the doors were closed, leaving no light to escape out of there.

3) It reminded me of when you have a designated “cozy place” that you go to. Since it wasnt shiny in there, the atmosphere allowed me to be alone with my thoughts. Especially since I like to wake up early because no one is really outside early Friday mornings, it was relaxing to have the place to myself. The gloom honestly made me sleepy since it allowed my mind to have its guard down.

Light Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/6/2026 – 6:30am – Driving through Connecticut

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The sun rising behind me as I drive. It is shining on the bare trees turning them gold. The sky in front of me is blue already.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As I was driving back to Hofstra, the sun started to rise behind me as I drove through small mountains and large hills, the sky in front of me had already become blue. The bare trees created something for the rising sun to reflect on, creating a sharp line between the blue sky and the gold trees. It reminded me of The Outsiders and the Robert Frost poem they feature in the story.

9th Lighting Observation – Mia Gozinsky

1. 4/9/26 – 8:00 to 10:02 pm – Shapiro Hall

2. Saw the open run-through of Dog Sees God for a second time since I saw it the night before, and the lighting changes surprised me both times. It was warm lighting with an intense vibe all at once, which was really cool to watch.

3. The slow change in colors, the quick, intense blackouts, and the slow fade up/spotlights were all very smooth as well as very well lit (wondered who helped with that?). The LEDs, no matter how annoying they were to get to work, had a beautiful gradient effect to them that made the show very enjoyable to watch. The use of the party lights was also very fun.
