Lighting Observation #2

1. 2/20/2026 Approximately 5pm South Campus near Dunkin
2. Just before sunset, the shadows are long and the lights on the building are starting to overthrow the natural daylight. The lights inside the Dunkin are dim, few people are inside. As I walk past i notice warm lamps and soft lighting that contrasts with the fading daylight
3. As I looked around, I recognized a lack of saturation in the colors around me, a sad day without much sun only gets sadder once it sets. The lack of color makes the surroundings seem somber and the bright white and blue lights pierce through everything calm about it. The lights in the Dunkin seem much different, warm yellows that are tinted orange through the windows gives some relief to the dreary color palette. I think that it’s a shame that it’s going to close soon.

Lighting Observation #3

  1. February 20th, 2026 – 3:10pm – Psibrary
  2. The fluorescent lights of the Psibrary shine down on the whole room from above. Every corner of the floor is brightly it. One light has a big stain on it.
  3. This light feels frigid cold despite the eternal sweltering heat of this small room. It shines with a stark, blinding brightness. Everyone seems to divert their eyes from the ceiling and refrain from looking up. The stark shadows cast by the ledges of the bookshelves create an eerie darkness on the aged books sitting tucked in the back of each shelf. The difference between the harsh brightness of the room and the melancholy veil of shadow draping the books is a very interesting result of common lighting.

3rd Lighting Observation

  1. Feburary 19th, 2026 – 10:35 Pm – Hague Dorm
  2. The lights were off, LEDs were on with a nice blue winter color and it made me feel at peace letting all the stress of the day leave me. The way the color and temperature of the heat was at, was  just so relaxing that it put me right at ease and made me not want to leave my bed.
  3. I love unwinding down with my LEDs on because sometimes the way something is hung up or positioned puts a person in a state of comfort and it gives the room a little piece of home and joy. That’s how it made me feel in that moment.

Nightlife

The light mainly comes through windows and surrounding buildings, besides the one street life near the center of the photo.

lighting observation 2

February 19 2026, 4:20pm, Lowe Costume Shop

The light from outside slightly shines through the window blinds. The sun is beginning to set, and as it sets the light gets dimmer and more cool toned.

The light comes through the blinds and is almost unnoticeable unless you’re looking for it- as the lighting in the room overpowers it. As the light shines through it reflects off the blinds, which are white, which make it appear even cooler toned then it may really be outside.

3rd Lighting Observation

  1. February 18th, 2026 – 10:34 pm – Monroe Theater
  2. I’m the President of Makin’ Treble, so my executive board and I were briefly meeting after rehearsal to discuss some upcoming events. We were seated on the stage, which wasn’t directly lit which made it seem dim, but the house lights were on. There are various television screens around the room (one on stage, one at the back of house, and two at either side of the house), which were also on very brightly and displayed a blue computer home screen with the Hofstra logo on it.
  3. The house lights were dim and took on a warm hue, but it was interesting to see how overpowering the blue screens around the theater were. They were very bright, but more than anything overly cool toned when compared to the rest of the theater. The house remained a sort of neutral tone since the blue was mixing with the warm house lights, but the stage, with no direct light, was almost entirely lit by blue. This created a stark difference between house and stage environments.

3rd Lighting Observation – KS

  1. 02/15/2026 – 11:34pm – Hofstra University next to Vander Poel Hall
  2. The light I am talking about is from one of the lamp posts on the Hofstra University Campus. Specifically, the one next to the stairs between Constitution Hall and Vander Poel Hall. This light comes across as extremely bright and white. Additionally, since it was nighttime, the light from the lamp post reveals the snow that was falling at the time in its range of glow.
  3. The light from the lamp post looked almost radioactive with its brightly shining white light against the night and the trees and the dorm. The snow falling made the light look even more magical, like a portal to another world. It made it feel like I was walking into Narnia.

Photo observation #2

  1. Jan 12 2026 at Cabaret (West End), London, England
  2. Night Life
  3. I flew to the UK just to watch the West End Production of Cabaret. After the show, I was waiting for a taxi outside of the theater. The blue lighting projecting on the walls and the white light framing the windows caught my attention and I took this photo. Not only did the outside of the building give off ‘nightvibe’, but the lighting inside was so well designed, it gave a nightclub type of feel.

Lighting Observation #2

2/15/2026 1:48am

Objective description: I bought a cheap $15 sunset lamp for my dorm. It created a cozy sunset feel in our room. Its circular, the rim of the light is yellow that blends into a pink moving inwards the circle.

subjective description: I’m hanging out with my roommates late at night, we’re chatting while doing work and having deep conversations. The lamp being the only thing illuminating the room creates a very intimate and cozy feel.

Photo Observation #2

1. June 20th 2025, 9:34pm, roof balcony in Philly

2. Night Life

3. I was visiting my grandparents at their apartment in Philadelphia and we decided to go up to the rooftop balcony of their building. I was feeling inspired so I took some pictures. I think this one perfectly portrays the theme “night life.” The darkness of the night is all around, but the city lights are shining. Even as the buildings get smaller towards the horizon, the lights do not dim. The city is alive.
