Photo Observation #10 – Four Seasons

  1. Fall Sunset in Vermont

When I think of fall sunsets in Vermont I think of all the light reflecting and highlighting the oranges and yellows of the leaves on the trees. Yet the sun is always still so bright casting shadows on the trees and through the mountains.

Lights used: R21, full with a breakup gobo. R15, full. R21, full. R15, full with a breakup gobo. R55, full.

2. Spring Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

I think of sunrises as still vert dark when coming through windows with gothic architecture. Its mixes of cool and warm tones, with very light color as well.

Lights used:  L201, 75% with window gobo. L151, 50%. R60, 50%. R68, 75% with dots gobo. R26, 75% with dots gobo. R15, 75% with dots gobo. R15, 75%. L151, 75%. L151, 75%.

3. Noon on a Hot Summer day in Hawaii

This was the one I had the most trouble with. I didn’t want it to just be bright yellow light. I don’t think I really succeeded at getting the hot summer vibe.

Lights used: R15, 75% with breakup gobo. L201, 75% with dots gobo. R15, 75% with dots gobo. R68, 75% with breakup gobo. R63, full. R63, full.

4. Winter Afternoon in Chicago.

I wanted all the colors I used to be cool and symmetrical. I feel like Chicago in the winter to me is very gray and colorless.

Lights used: R68, 75%. R60, 50%. No color, 75%. R60, 50%. R68, 75%. L201, 75%. L201, 75%. R361, 25%. L361, 25%.

Four Seasons- Saniy Coates

1) Fall sunset in Vermont

When I was looking up pictures of Vermont, I noticed that the sunsets were kinda dark but it was hard to replicate because sometimes sunsets are never really only one color. So I decided to lean more into the dark orange and make it look as if we are at the end cycle of the sunset.

Lights used- R27, R45, Orange R18, Yellow R10, White

2) Spring sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

I used this picture more for how I wanted the positioning of the lights (not necessarily for the color). Since cathedrals have such big windows, the light coming through it would also be very powerful and in large amounts. I did not want to use too bright of an orange since it would have made the lighting look artificial so I stuck to a middle ground of orange light

Lights (and gobos) used- R12, White with a window gobo

3) Noon on a hot summer day in Hawaii

I went based off of the beaches that are prevalent in Hawaii. It was pretty hard to depict the sand in the right way but as for the water, I found that the cyc lights are the most helpful to show the background water.

Lights used- Cyan 25%, R14, Blue, Azure 50%

4) Winter afternoon in Chicago

Since the background for the stage lighting is so dim at times, I decided to put the ambient at medium. But then, it caused the lights to dim when I would put them in so I turned up the intensity. In Chicago, it usually is cold and some spot of snow during this time so I wanted to make the sky look like a nice tone of VERY white blue as it tends to normally look during snow season.

Lights used- Cyan 25%,White

10th Photo Theme: Four Seasons

1) A Fall sunset in Vermont

a.) Vermont Print of Fall Sunset Over Lake Willoughby | Vermont Fall | Vermont Landscape Photography | Canvas Print, Framed Photo, Metal Print - Etsy

b.)

  • Medium purple R049, Parry Sky Blue R68, Deep Straw R15, all at Full with High Beam intensity and Low Ambient Light.
  • I really liked this photo because of all the vibrant colors it presents, how it reflects off the water so seamlessly, and how it’s full of rich color.

2) Spring sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral

a.)Spring sunrise at Norwich Cathedral, Norfolk, England Stock Photo - Alamy

b.)

  • Deep Straw R15 at Full for lights 1,3,5,6 and White Light at 50% for lights 2 and 4 at High Beam intensity and Low Ambient Light.
  • I really liked how it reflected onto the cathedral, and you can see each shadow in the photo, which makes it more beautiful to look at.

3) Noon on a hot Summer day in Hawaii

a.)Twice a year in Hawaii, L?hain? Noon (aka Zero Shadow Day) makes the Sun sit right overhead at noon. For a brief time in May and July, shadows vanish ? completely. It's

b.)

  • Deep Straw R15 at Full for lights 1,3,5,6 and White Light at 50% for lights 2 and 4 at High Beam intensity and Low Ambient Light.
  • Now this one was my favorite yet, because the way I hung the lights perfectly, like the photo, and the way it is also placed, looks so cool and makes the photo look warm and lively.

4) Winter afternoon in Chicago (This is Snow not Sand)

a.)

b.)

  • Twilight Blue R075 at Full for lights 1, 2, and 3 and White Light at Full for 4,5, and 6.
  • This one is more simple but still gives off that cold lighting effect that the photo is trying to give off. It was different from some of the other ones I saw which is why I decided to use it and I like how you can see each individual  shadow throughout.

Most of the references I found included shades of purple accompanied by oranges. I decided to experiment with good for the clouds and just focused on creating the scene rather than pointing it at the model

For this one I fell in love with the image of a stained glass window letting in the sunlight. The window gobo is exactly what I was thinking of but it fit the best out of everything. I used the breakup gobo to create the overlapping color effect on the floor

I wasn’t quite sure how to portray noon so I decided to model the figure as much as possible and added a blue backdrop to hopefully give the island feel. I would have liked to add footlights to fill in the sharp shadows on the chin and underarms for a more ambient feeling

For this one I piled the lights to one side and found the coolest blue that seemed white to imitate the snow and cold sunlight. I would have turned off the beams like in the prior image but I thought they kind of looked like snow falling so I kept em

Photo Observation #10

A fall sunset in Vermont — in this photo I tried to mimic the warm glow that the sun gives off against the colorful trees in the fall. There is one light that acts as the sun shining directly on the subject. That is a cooler color while the lights surrounding it make the scene feel very fall-like. The cyc is a deep bluish purple because when the sun gets low, the sky behind you gets darker.

Spring sunrise in a gothic cathedral — While the rest of the stage is dark because gothic cathedrals are dark, there is a bright light coming from the side. I still chose a warm color even though spring time is usually cooler colors because I find that when the light comes through a stain glass window, it gives a warmer glow. I used a gobo that makes it look like a tree is in front of the window because trees bloom in spring creating this effect.

Noon on a hot summer day in Hawaii — I tried to create the effect where the sun is directly overhead and there are no shadows. which happens twice a year in Hawaii. I had a bit of trouble getting the lights bright enough to mimic the blinding Hawaii sun so I added a lot of white lights (as many as I could) and then bumped up the brightness of everything. To create the no shadow look, I put the yellow light directly above the subject like how the sun would be. The light blue almost teal on the cyc represents the bright blue sky. I also kept some ambient light to add to the brighness.

Winter afternoon in Chicago — Most photos of Chicago have the big metal bean, so the circle represents the bean here. Winter in Chicago is cold so I used lots of cool colors with just a little blue on the cyc for the sky. The rest is just gray. having lots of lights gives of the bright feeling that happens when the sun reflects off of snow, while still feeling cold. A winter afternoon is going to have a very low sun, mostly covered by clouds. The slightly more yellow light directly pointing at the bean represents the sun. It feels a little bit warmer, but barely, and it is too low to really matter.

11th Lighting Observation – KS:

  1. 04/21/2026 – 1:39pm – Berliner Hall (In a lecture room)
  2. The light I am talking about is coming from the back of a computer monitor. It is a green flashing light.
  3. The flashing light gives the feeling of alarm, but without danger. The need to be noticed but not because of anything negative. The green color does not really give off the idea of danger.

10th Photo Observation – Four Seasons – KS:

  1. A Fall Sunset in Vermont
    1.
      1. This lighting fits the description because it incorporates how the warm colors mixes with the cooler colors as well as how the sun is setting from the side.
  2. Spring Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral
      1. This lighting fits the description due to the view of the shining light through the window. I also included a gobo to simulate the fact that the lighting was coming through the windows.
  3. Noon on a hot Summer day in Hawaii
      1. This lighting fits the description due to its brighter/lighter feel and more sharp colors (to represent the sun and the sky).
  4. Winter afternoon in Chicago
      1. This lighting fits the description because it feels colder, like the winter snow, and has the bluish tint of the sun coming through the fog of a winter sky.

“Four Seasons” Light Lab

  1. Fall Sunset in Vermont – Since Vermont is a colder state, I tried to use more cool tones, in the cyc, while also still adding in some gold/yellow hues for the fading sunlight. Most of the lights I used were also set to a much lower intensity to achieve this look. I made sure all the focuses were soft so everything blended together more too!

2) Spring Sunrise in a Gothic Cathedral – I LOVE HOW THIS TURNED OUT IN MY OPINION! I wanted all the light to come in from one place as if they were coming in through a stained-glass window (or windows). I used the window gobo on a pink, blue, and green light, and then the lined gobo on a pink light set to a high degree and softer focus layered over the window pattern. I also used a few gold lights on soft focus and low intensity to make more sunlight looking streams and set the cyc to a low intensity gold!

3) Noon on a Hot Summer day in Hawaii – I was trying to achieve the look of what’s called “Lahaina Noon” which is something that happens in Hawaii and causes shadows on vertical objects to kind of disappear. It was really hard to achieve in light lab but I did my best, and I also added some blue and green to the cyc because those are colors I associate with Hawaii.

4) Winter Afternoon in Chicago – I went with a lot of cool toned lights in this one and set the ambient light to high. The cyc is a mix of white on top and a super light blue/teal on the bottom. I added two lights on a soft focus with no gobo set to a cool white to imitate the sun through clouds, and then two more set with dot gobos focused on the floor to sort of look like snow!

Lighting Moment #11

  1. April 19th, 7:00pm — sitting in the back of the Stu
  2. My friend was talking to me and I happened to look behind her out of this long rectangular window. The sun was setting so it looked like a mix of a summery blue and a very small bit of pink. ironically it looked out over a dumpster so it normally wouldn’t be pretty, but the lighting made it pretty. There was also a bright yellow pole that went with the colors of the light and enhanced it all.
  3. This normally wouldn’t be something pretty that you notice as the actual landscape wasn’t anything special, but for some reason the lighting was so perfect that it made even the dullest landscape into something nice to look at. The window went all the way to the floor so it let in a lot of this light and made the room look bright and summery as well. It was that soft kind of lighting were everything still looks a little damp after rain but you know sunshine is coming again. It felt very optomistic.

Lighting Observation #10

1)3/29/26 – Shapiro hall

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: red light spills under and through the cyc coating the wires and black drape in red. The red is the only light seen. Straight through the cyc the light looks pink but when it lands on the floor and curtain it is clear the light is red.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The red light is warm but scary. It feels like a warning telling the observer not to cross into this red, dimly lit cut-through. With how dim it is you can barely see the various wires along the floor, each barely distinguishable from the other. It feels like those scenes in horror movies where the protagonist stares down the long creepily lit hall they will absolutely need to run through later that will lead to a major plot element. The way the red light reflects off the black curtains makes the curtains themselves look red, as if for this moment they were doused in red dye for the fun of it.
