Photo Observation
Attribute: Google
Theme: Wild Card
Description: My self-given theme was horror as I find lighting related to horror so interesting but I didn’t want the classic black and white so I found this image. I really like how there is color but the photo still is kind of scary. I think its really cool how there are the three different colors shining in but there is very little spillage between the colors, they are all in their distinctive sections. I also think the angle and texture of each lighting block is really interesting as the streakiness and elongated angles add a horrific element to the photo. Finally, I like how the angle elongated the shadow of the man because it twists it into something even more terrifying.

4) DESCRIPTION: This is an image of the Gaffney Peach, also known as the Giant Butt, in Gaffney, SC. I chose this image because I think the lighting and the shadows make it look and feel very intimidating. Its curves are hugged by the shadows, letting the Peach embrace and enhance that daunting feeling. In the image, it stands quite tall, making the trees appear small and insignificant in the background. The light also doesn’t really touch the trees quite as much, making them seem less important. Overall, the lighting and composition of the image exude power and create intimidating feelings for the viewer.

Wild Card – Alice McKay
- Attributes: I took this photo at 1 AM.
- Theme: Wild Card
- Description: I took this photo because there was a giant potato reflecting the light on campus. I noticed that the other side of the potato was dark and created shadows, but not until I came to this side that was lit by the parking lot lights. The plastic potato was damp from driving through the rain, and the water drops reflected the light back out. The light helps to enhance the illusion that the potato is real and it makes it look freshly baked.

Wild Card Picture

- Found on Google
- Theme: Wild Card
- The lighting in this picture is fascinating. There is a sense of irony given that the subject of the picture is a lighthouse and there is very minimal light and color. It’s noticeable that the light from the sun is either rising or setting just below the horizon and is blocked by the clouds in the sky. Having the picture be in a black and white is quite striking because color is only visible to to light wavelengths, and it’s almost like there is no color because the lighthouse is clearly not lit.

Description: I really love this photo because I think the way the mirrors mess with the lights is really cool. There’s not much visible effect from the light, but the way that the black of the background fades into the warm yellowish color of the light as it gets deeper is really interesting. The simplicity of the color scheme is also really appealing, too, because it makes the image look darker than I think it would if there were lots of colorful lights. I also really like how you can only tell there are people because of the absence of light in some places.

THEME: Wildcard
DESCRIPTION: With my final dance performance coming up this week, I have started to notice all the interesting choices for lighting made by this season’s choreographers. This photo captures the essence of one of the pieces, choreographed by Yoshito. The lack of color in correspondence to the sharp angular light provides a dramatic intensity to the atmosphere. Moreover, I feel as though the rectangular format is similar to that of focusing a lens or zooming in on a picture. While the small frames of light create interesting shapes on the floor, they also focus the audience’s gaze on the dancers’ movement and fade out all the in-between spaces.

Lighting Moment: WILDCARD
ATTRIBUTES: Google
THEME: Wildcard
DESCRIPTION: I chose this picture because I thought it uses warm and cool colors in a very interesting way. The magenta light coming from the lamp and the deep blue light coming from the sign create a very calming atmosphere that I think is very cool. The dim lighting in the room also contrasts with the bright light coming from the neon sign, which gives the sign a almost glowing affect around it, which I also thought was very interesting.
Lighting Moment
Date/Time/Location: April 27 at 9:45 in the Netherlands
Objective Description: The purple fairy lights wrapped around the room and the warmth of a single lamp
Subjective Description: The purple fairy lights wrap around the corner of the room. They don’t provide much light given the other light source in the room, but they do give the space a bit of life and liveliness that would otherwise be absent. The fairy lights are changing and flickering, turning on and off every few seconds. The purple, combined with the warmth of the single lamp in the corner, give the room a warm, inviting, and lively feeling, drawing the inhabitants closer and giving a sense of connection
