Lighting Observation- #9

  1. April 12, 2022
  2. Dunkin Donuts on Campus
  3. I am looking down at my Dunkin Donuts coffee (iced Americano with oat milk and almond flavor shot, if you were curious) and see the overhead fluorescent light reflecting against the plastic top of the cup. The lights are more yellow-tinged than white/blue and actually compliment the warm tone straw and brown coffee inside.

Lighting Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: April 6th, 8:45 pm, LH Comm
  2. Objective Description: I was in LH Comm for a dance rehearsal on Wednesday night from 8 – 9:30 pm. Although the room has windows, the darkness from outside crept into the space and gave the room a dim mood. Moreover, the lights inside the room are not a bright white and did not add much of a contrast to the natural lighting from outside. Only half of the lights were turned on as well, so there were several shaded areas within the large studio.
  3. Subjective Description: The past two weeks, I have been on-and-off sick and genuinely did not want to go to that studio for rehearsal. Nonetheless, when I walked into the room, the dim-lit lighting and subtle moonlight emanating from the windows calmed my nerves. I noticed that the moonlight tends to effect me in a way that relaxes my body. At first I thought I associated darkness with sleepiness, but now I realize how I absorb energy from light. When I am in ballet class in the mornings I have much more vigor in my steps and prefer large thrashy movements due to the sunlight. However, in this moment I felt tranquil and ready to move through the dance with ease.

Spring Photo Observation

  1. Attributes: https://www.dreamstime.com/picnic-park-green-meadow-flowers-plaid-bottle-wine-romantic-dinner-nature-free-space-text-spring-image118478558
  2. Theme: Spring
  3. Description: Everything about this photo exemplifies the simple joys of spring. In the background, you can see how the sunlight illuminates the grass, trees, and pastel flowers. Moreover, this lighting is not only beautiful, but encourages people to go outdoors and get some vitamin D in fun ways, such as having a picnic! While the picture clearly embodies a warm temperature, the overcast shadow from the trees provides a nice shade from the heat. All around, I like that there are spots of shade and wide spaces of light that compliment the natural colors of the terrain.

Virtual Light Lab

Fall sunset-

  • High side light in warm orangey tones
  • Used the breakup gobo to make it look like the sun is setting through trees with falling leaves
  • The higher light is R15 “Deep Straw” and the lower light is R21 “Golden Amber”
  • 90º overhead spot, soft with a dark blue to signify a darkening night sky; soft focus
  • Sharp narrow white beam from right to signify the moon light shining through the sky
  • Added haze and low ambient light

Caribbean noon

  • Warm light overhead- 70 degree angles, as if sun was shining through clouds and you can see the beams of light.
  • Warm gold tones to show warmth.

Winter afternoon before snow

  • High ambient light background, like when you look out the window before a snow day.
  • white light overhead, with a soft fade and dotted gobo
  • Light blue lights on corners of stage with the dots as well to resemble flurries.

Gothic cathedral sunrise

  • Side light, as if looking outside to the sunrise
  • #1 is second from bottom, golden with the window gobo
  • Low ambient light, as if dark in cathedral and only light provided by the sunrise outside
  • #2 light “Golden Amber” gel to add depth to the color of the sunrise
  • #3 light above the #1 with a warm pink color to add more depth and reflect the colorful morning sky, softer fade
  • #4 above #3 with more gold sunrise-y light

Spanish Class

  1. DATE-TIME-LOCATION: April 7, 3:30pm- Spanish Class
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: white board
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: During another boring spanish class, as I was starring at the white board and saw gleam from the board that was shinning through the sun out of the window on my teachers right side. The window blinds are closed and still the sun shinned through the dimly lit classroom.

Charlese-April 1

  1. DATE-TIME-LOCATION: April 1, 8:00am- Bill of Rights Rm 505
  2. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Sunrise from dorm window
  3. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I woke up from a crazy night. The last time I went out on a school night it was my sophmore year. I had entirely too much fun. Once I woke up it wasn’t so fun anymore. I had a headache I smelled like a bar and the sun was shinning right on my face. If I wasn’t awake before, I was awake then. It was a bright white light that gleamed throgh the blinds.

Photo Observation: Spring

2) https://www.virginia.org/listing/libby-hill-park/6882/

3) THEME: Spring

4) DESCRIPTION: This is a photo of Libby Hill Park in Richmond, Virginia taken in the springtime. I chose this photo because I thought the sun created a beautiful dichotomy between nature and industrialism that also spoke to the excitement of incoming spring. On the left side of this image, the sun illuminates the trees and other greenery with a warm glow, casting shadows pointing to the right side of the image. The skyline is visible on the righthand side, but it and its surroundings are all a dull gray, untouched by the beams of sunlight. Simultaneously, this image shows spring pushing out winter, and the joys of nature working against the environmental stressors of industrialism.

Lighting Observation #8

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 4/5/22, ~10:30pm, Long Beach

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The hotel next to the boardwalk shone bright blue in the night sky, casting a glow onto the beach and water below.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The beach was empty and cold, stagnant waiting for the thralls of summer tourists. The sky, pitch black, created a canvas for the lights of all the beachfront buildings to paint. A harsh blue glow coming from the large hotel interrupted the calm of the off-season and the dark night sky, blueing out the boardwalk, sand, and water. A mix of exhaustion, excitement, and anticipation filled the cool air for one of the last times, signifying the change to come in the new season.

Lighting Observation #8

  1. Thursday, April 7th, around 11:50pm. Driving on Oak Street and passing Napolini Express.
  2. The restaurant was visibly closed and a dim red light filled the restaurant. The store sign was still lit up, and there were street lamps in the parking lot.
  3. The lighting of Oak street was very consistent, a street light every couple of yards) as we continued our journey back to Hofstra University from the Mineola train station. Then when we came across the light right before the Hofstra University light, I noticed  striking red light to my left. It gave the street a pleasant contrast, after having so much of the same lighting. It also gave the street life in a way; even though the shop was closed, and the street was practically dead, it told a story. Obviously, the story is in the eye of the beholder, but it allowed me to appreciate lighting in a new way, with a new story that I hadn’t seen before.

Lighting Moment

Date/Time/Location: 4/8 3:37pm, My bedroom

Objective Description: Laying in my bed recharging before the rest of my day. The sun is coming through my half-lifted blinds and shining on my plants. There is one aloe plant, a spider plant, a jade plant and an orchid. They are all by the window in a different orientation, receiving different amounts of sun in the moment.

Subjective Description: The only light coming in is from the two windows located on either side of the room. It’s one of the first days where it’s thankfully been above 60 degrees. As I’m laying down allowing my body to rest, I’m looking at my plants (which are frankly in need of water) and they look like a mosaic of sunshine and green. I like the way the pattern from the blinds lands on the plants and how its not neat/organized. My aloe plant has a leaf that looks like its reaching out in desperation (probably because it thinks I’ve forgotten about it). I also like the idea that as the sun continues to move throughout the day this “mosaic” will be ever changing and the same one I saw this afternoon may never be recreated.
