Theme: Spring

Description: I chose this photo because of the colors as well as the angle of the photo. I wanted to choose a photo that had a different angle than just flowers straight on. This angle stood out to me because it looks like the person taking the photo was laying down in the flowers. I like the yellow flowers and how the sun shining through their petals make them less opaque. The sun is very bright and reminds me of a one-point perspective drawing in art class because you can’t tell if the sky ends where the sun is or if it keeps going. I also really like how the blue in the sky has an ombre effect as you look closer at where the sun is.

Lighting Observation #8

4/8/22 – 1:07 pm – Bits and Bytes

Objective Description: Three warm-toned ceiling fan lights, small balloon-like in size. the three lights are lined up in a row. The light from the bulbs is reflecting off of a wall of windows.

Subjective Description: The day is dark and gloomy and it has been raining. The rain is dripping down the windows that surround the fan lights. The orange light bouncing off these now grey-looking windows adds a little brightness back to them. This is so noticeable because of the juxtaposition of the bright orange and the gloomy blue. It’s as if the fan lights are tiny suns trying to shine through the dark sky.

Lighting Moment – Alice McKay

Time: 9:27 PM

Location: Stage Manager’s Booth in the Blackbox

Objective Description: Sitting at the desk in the corner of the dark booth seconds away from calling the end of intermission cue the familiar feeling of adrenaline came in. Tonight was the first night we had any audience other than designers, and the feeling of the quiet, dim booth while looking over the actor-less set was something I have missed so much.

Subjective Description: The lamp on the top left of the stage manager’s table in the booth being the primary source of light created room for the shadows of papers, tables, and wires to harbor in the room. The flickering of computers, systems, and stage lights glowing ever so slightly throughout the small dark room.

Spring Photo Observation

Theme: Spring

Description: I chose this photo for a few reasons. One is because I like how visible the sun beams are. When I think of spring I think of sun beams probably because there is something new about that and I often think of the sun in the spring. I also chose this image because of where the light is coming from. The sunlight looks like it is coming from a rising sun and another thing that comes to mind when I think of Spring is the idea of rebirth and newness so the direction fits. I also liked in this picture how the sunlight illuminated the bits of orange on the ground because those warm tones are such a stark contrast to the rest of the image and the sunlight draws out that warmth even more.

Spring Picture

  2. Theme: Spring
  3. I chose this picture because I felt that the warmth of the light gives a good contrast to the harsh light I associate with Winter. When I think of Spring lighting, I think of a warm light that the Earth will want to absorb, or a light that invites life. I find this to be the opposite if the lighting I associate with Winter, which is almost like a light that is being reflected off of the Earth, not giving life at all, but almost taking it away. The warm light that reflects pink from the clouds captures Spring perfectly, and as the Sun is setting it almost looks like the flowers are leaning towards it as if to get as much life as possible out of that light until it greets them again at sunrise.

  3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because I loved the way you can see the beams of light peaking through the flowers. I think that the way the flowers separate the light source from the sun into a bunch of tiny beams of light. I also think that the warm colors from the sun compliment the colors of the flowers to create the spring atmosphere.

Description: This photo very clearly reminds me of spring. With the bright purple, freshly budded flowers as the focal point of the photo, and the stark white and yellow light coming from the sun. The sun creates a spotlight pointing out the distinction between the earthy greens and the purple that create for a beautiful representation of the earth coming to life in the spring.

Light Observation

  3. LOCATION: Hofstra University Bill of Rights
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I was in my bed and because it has been winter for so long I totally forgot how it felt to wake up to a window full of brightness. I opened my eyes and the sun was bright, intense, and going directly to my window. The sky was pink, orange, and a little blue and I was able to see a little bit of the moon. I thought it was a very pretty landscape to watch specially when it is the early morning.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As the sun hit directly my window it was also going directly to my right eye. Even though it was bright, it made me feel warm and gave me a sense of hope. It made me feel ready for the day and wanting to wake up because it is so hard to wake up with a very cloudy and cold weather. It made me feel better overall.

  5. DESCRIPTION: This picture is absolutely beautiful. The reason why I chose it was because besides showing a really well known monument with an amazing representation of the spring season which are the cherry blossoms, the green grass, and the bright sun coming from the back, it also gives the warmer feeling that Spring gives and happiness related to how the winter is over and summer is coming up.
