Lighting Observation – #5

  1. March 7, 8:45pm
  2. Location: Hempstead turnpike
  3. I was deriving home from work, just off the parkway and driving down Hempstead turnpike towards my house. I looked ahead of me and saw all of the upcoming traffic lights dotting the road ahead of me. Against the dark night, the bright red, yellow, and green popped. The further into the distance I looked, the dots were more fuzzy, and the ones closer to me very clear against the dark sky.

Lighting Observation

Date: March 3, 2022

Time: 5:30pm

Location: Second floor of CV Starr

Objective Description: The sun was beginning to set and could be seen shining through a bare tree.

Subjective Description: The soft pink glow shown through the jagged outline of the tree. As the leaves have fallen, each branch and stick could be seen in great detail. The symmetry of the tree provided a sense of balance and was enhanced by the deep black lines of the backlit tree. Each space between the branches carried a soft bowl of pastel pink light.

Photo Observation: Single Artificial Light Source

Attributes: Adobe Stock

Theme: Single Artificial Light Source

Description: I chose this photo how the light source is coming from the center part of the top of the space. I like how it looks like the light source is showering the space with golden light. I noticed how this, in the context of a performance, could be perceived as the sunshine or some type of heaven sequence. I like the warmth that the artificial light source provides and how once it reaches the ground it blends seamlessly into the darkness.

Photo Observation – Single Artificial Light Source

  1. ATTRIBUTES: Photo by Y on film on Pinterest
  2. THEME: Single Artificial Light Source
  3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo because it is a very clear single artificial light source of a spot. I like that you can see the source within the photo and that the placement of the light is to the right of photo. The beam of light that expands to fill more space that is otherwise black. The use of fog and red light creates a very distinct mood, and, with the silhouette of the microphone, makes one curious as to who is approaching to speak in the light.

Lighting Observation #5

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/6/22, 6:12 PM, Costume shop

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: There were a few rows of fluorescent lights that lit up the entire room.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I looked up during the Revolutionists strike and noticed 3 long rows of fluorescent lights in the costume shop. I noticed that each light was a little dimmer at the ends, and there was no light in between the fluorescent light fixtures. I wonder why this effect didn’t transfer to the floor. Even if the lighting overlapped, shouldn’t the dim spots still be dimmer since the lighting would not overlap there?

(Drawing is in plan view)

2) ATTRIBUTE: From Encyclopedia Brittanica’s definition of a desk lamp.

3) THEME: Single Artificial Light Source

4) DESCRIPTION: The room is being lit by (at least) two light sources, but the desk lamp is uniquely separate from the others, creating a small pool of light on the desk.

Lighting Moment

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Student Center, 7:55pm

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The street lights in the parking lot closest to the residential side of campus. The lights cast a superficial and almost worthless glow into the darkness. The night seems to swallow the light after a few feet, leaving a trail of glowing round white lights lining the perimeter of the parking lot.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It’s almost time for work and the sun. has long since set. The atmosphere is eerie and damp. The air is crisp and has an aggressive bite tonight. Long Island feels small this time of night. Theres no one around except for students leaving the student center from a last minute trip to Starbucks. Suddenly its just me and my shadow staring into the darkness, being lured along the sidewalk by the glow of the streetlights.

Lighting Observation

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: Estabrook, 6:00pm, 3/3/2022

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A rainbow shone through my friend’s window and displayed its colors on her bedspread. The sunbeams made visible the dust particles floating around the room.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: As the sun began to set, Erin’s west-facing window received and reflected the beams in the form of rainbows into the room. Her pale pink bedspread was sprinkled with multicolored light streaks. Dancing dust particles glowed golden in the beams of light bursting through the sky, ending their journey in our laps. The moment felt like youthful joy, when magic was still a possibility and hope was everlasting.

Lighting Observation #4

  1. Wednesday, March 2nd. Around 11:20am in Lowe 216.
  2. Our 15 minute break after drafting had just ended and David asked somebody to turn on the overhead lights that I hadn’t realized were off to begin with.
  3. I was sitting in my seat at the front of the classroom when the natural light coming in through the windows changed to fluorescent lighting all of a sudden. I was caught off guard because the difference between the soft natural light is a lot different than the harsh light from the overhead lights. The whole room changed colors, and it felt like where the room was originally absorbing light, it began reflecting it.

Lighting Observation #4

1) 03/03/2022 – 4:12 – Door Entry

2) Objective description: My front door when magnetized open leads directly to the glass door and windows that are the entryway to Hague house in Netherlands north. The sunlight shined through the windows and into my room shining on a sky blue blanket, creating an effect of a bright white spot on the blanket and everything around the blanket becoming a similar blue.

3) Subjective Description: The bright sunlight created a gleaming beam into the doorway of my room. It shined so brightly on a sky blue surface. The sunlight pierced the blanket, stripping it of all its color where contact was made. The color being stripped needed a place to go, it plastered itself in every direction. Changing the color of walls, chairs, a table, and anything else in its path. The entire room had a mellow yet bright blue shine to it.
