  3. The street is lit by a single lamp post which shines an amber light down on to the street. The haze in the air allows you to see the beam of light as it comes down on to the ground.

Description: When I thought of a single light source I immediately thought about ghost stories and the ominous floating head surrounded by complete darkness. This is something very recognizable in most people’s minds, and I love the contrast the flashlight makes on the little girls face darkening her eyes and creating stark shadows along her cheeks.

  3. LOCATION: Garden City
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION:  I was coming back from a restaurant and then I saw these beautiful Christmas Lights that were still on from last year all over the house; it made it seem as if it was like a Disney movie. They were varied in colors such as green, yellow, orange, blue, red, pink, and purple and changed the combinations too.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: A dark background with colorful lights is really interesting to watch because it really highlights all of the colors coming from the small bulbs so that they can be seen from far distances. The overall feeling that these lights created were happiness and joy. When the lights would change colors to new combinations it definitely made it more interesting because I was not watching the same thing over and over again.

  3. The flower is lit by a single purple light. There’s no haze or anything, so the beam of light is only apparent because of how it lights the petals up. The wider wash of the light gives the image a bright purple glow

  3. The actor is being lit by a single spotlight. Because of the haze/fog, you are able to actually see the direct beam of the light and how it shines through space rather than appearing as a flood.

  3. Description: While this image is quite plain, it reminds me of dancing in the Black Box Theater very much. The blackness displays a prominent contrast to the singular white light illuminating from the center of the stage. Moreover, the simplicity and deficit of colors augment the melodrama of the stage. The fog also adds to the “mysterious” or “eerie” mood of the space. Although this lighting does not seem like much at first glance, if I were in the audience I would be thinking to myself “what is gonna happen?” or “who is going to appear?”

DESCRIPTION : I chose this photo because I like how the single light source seems even brighter as it is reflected off the metal water bottle. It makes the light feel so much more powerful. I also like how the shadows of the water bottle help define its shape in space, giving it dimension and life.

  3. I chose this photo because the light from the lamp is actually sort of harsh in color and brightness but the resulting light on the table and the book and wall, is much softer and warm while still being bright. I think it’s interesting that a light itself can look one way and the way the items are lit can look completely different.

Single Light on Stage

  4. THEME: Single Light
  5. DESCRIPTION: I had a meeting with some film majors and we were talking about amazing moments that artists can build on the stage. One of them said that single lights on the stage are really powerful and I never thought about it but this type of lighting coming from above the stage has been used a lot in many movies (Flashdance where all of the water is falling on the main character and others). It definitely creates an intimidating, focused, and serious feeling. In this case the blue light makes it more serious because of the color, tone, and also because it makes the dark background become even darker.
