Lighting Moment #4

1) DATE-TIME-LOCATION: 3/1/22, 6:42 AM, Constitution Hall

2) OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: The orange sunrise was shining through the window shades.

3) SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: I normally wake up to a harsh, cold, dull, blue light shining through the window, but when I went to sleep earlier, I was rewarded by waking up earlier to a refreshing, warm, bright, orange sunrise peeking through the window shades. The light was so bright that it encouraged me to get out of bed much faster than I normally do, and I wondered how I had never woken up to that light before.

Night Life

2) ATTRIBUTE: This is a photo taken by Ian J. Stark in a night club.

3) THEME: Night club

4) DESCRIPTION: This photo is mostly dark with a few very bright lights. The dark represents night, and because it is so dark the lights are highlighted and represent life. If this were a video, the lights would be very active, flashing on and off and changing colors. Additionally, the general blurriness of the photo represents the mysterious and exciting nature of night life.

Photo Observation

  1. ATTRIBUTES: Central Park Dec 7, 2021 4:58pm
  2. THEME: Night Life
  3. DESCRIPTION: I chose this photo both because behind me, everything was completely dark. Visually, it just as easily could have been 10pm but in this area of the park, the sky is fully visible and you can see the last of the sunset colors in the bottom corner in the clouds. The lights from the skyscrapers are reflecting off of the dark water. The lighting lends itself to depicting an idea of nightlife while also still having a lot of natural light. I think lighting a stage while trying to create a night time scene seems very tricky because in theory you are looking for ways to implement darkness while still making sure the actors, dancers, etc. are visible to the audience.

Night Life

Kabukicho Tokyo(google images)

I chose this photo because when I think of lighting related to nightlife I think of neon lights and big cities where the city is never dark. The giant red sign right in the middle draws attention and leads down a street that is just starting the night of fun. The street behind the sign is so bright and lively compared to the street going horizontal to it. the street on either side of the sign looks dull and tired compared to the nightlife of Kabukicho district.

Photo Observation #2

Attributes: Unsplash

Theme: Night Life

Description: I chose this photo because of the contrast of dark and light. I think the crowd of people against the warmth of the fireworks is striking and stood out to me. It reminds not necessarily of clubbing night life but of nostalgic nights with friends or family. I really enjoyed the silhouette in this picture.

Night Life Photo Observation

  1. Attributes: https://www.grubstreet.com/bestofnewyork/after-hours-parties-nyc.html
  2. Theme: Night Life
  3. Description: When I hear the term “night life,” my mind instantly jumps to images of dance clubs, late trips to the city, and going out with friends. In college in particular, the night is tied to the idea of “partying” or socializing. In this photo, you will see a large group of people crowded into a small place with different colored lights and a slight haze to the room. Generally, different colored lights and fog are used to excite party-goers and make the atmosphere appear more fun. While the lights simply look “cooler” than if they were basic white lights, I think this image does a great job of showing how it may also be slightly disorienting if someone were to actually be in this space.

Lighting Observation

  1. Date / Time / Location: March 1st, 2:29 pm, LHComm dance studio
  2. Objective Description: Today, the dance studio was very bright but not to the point where it hurt my eyes. Overall, the room is full of dull colors: a greenish/grayish floor, old wooden panels, and eggshell brick walls. The top of the studio has giant mirrors which showed us the overcast sky outside.
  3. Subjective Description: Typically, one can see where the sun is in the sky either because it is visible or shines through the clouds. While the foggy weather today consisted of a light grey, I still could not see any sunlight or a singular bright point in the sky. In each window, the sky consisted of the same dismal color. This lack of brightness made me feel relaxed yet sluggish.

  1. DATE: 02/25/22
  2. TIME: 11:00 pm
  3. LOCATION: Neon Party in NYC
  4. OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION:  This place was a huge dark bar  full of black. There was not a single spot without black in that room. People would come in with different neon colors such as light blue, yellow, light green, pink, white, and more. My two favorite colors were pink and white because they were so strong that anyone could see them.
  5. SUBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It really amazes me how neon colors work on dark colors, in this case black. I think our eyes are always looking for interesting things to look at and definitely neon is something that entertains the eyes because it is so amazing to watch. What attracted my attention the most was that no all the colors had the same intensity. Pink, white, yellow, and light blue and green were the strongest ones. On the contrary, red, and dark blue and green were not that interesting because of course we are talking about more dark colors. Usually, neon colors have a shiny highlighted appearance but not every color has the ability to do that.

“Safe Night Life” Eve Alas

  1. DATE: 02/28/22
  2. TIME: 6:30 pm
  3. LOCATION: at Hofstra’s Student Center
  4. THEME: Safe Night Life
  5. DESCRIPTION: Every time I come back from the studio or rehearsal at night, I always see this lamp. It amazes me how bright it looks in the middle of all of the darkness coming from the sky, trees, and buildings. Because of this light and many others that are around campus we are able to see where we are going. Personally, I am scared of the dark and this lighting gives me a little bit of safety and makes everything less scary. Night life is usually related to dark backgrounds combined with lamps coming from the streets, bars, restaurants, and other places.

Lighting Observation

Date: 2-22-22

Time: 5:15 pm

Location: Bottom floor of the engineering building

Objective Description: There were TVs and lights with yellow and blue on them shining through a crossed pattern on the windows of the big data lab which then shone the color on the floor of the hallway.

Subjective Description: The yellow and blue lights created a series of triangles on the ground whose edges blurred to a glow. The shapes were a stark contrast to the dim and drab hallway they shone in like an illuminating pathway cutting into the darkness.
